  • Management and treatment of Heart disease open heart surgeries in children
  • Rheumatic fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease prevention and control
  • Annual fund raising programmes
  • Gala Dinner every November/December
  • Research programme
  • The establishment of the Heart to Heart foundation was a realization of a dream of two founder trustees, Dr. B.M. Gikonyo and Dr. Dan Gikonyo. The two heart specialists vision arose from the realization that the local heart specialists could not treat their patients to the logical end despite their experience and expertise due to the financial constraints experienced by the affected families.

High incidences of rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease coupled with high cost of treatment and the need to provide quality care to the needy children made the two cardiologists bring together a team of professionals cardiologists and other people who shared similar concerns to establish the foundation.

To date the foundation has assisted or been directly involved in over 300 open heart surgeries on children who had no hope as their parents were to pay.

Founded In 1: Why We Exist

Heart to Heart was founded during the Cold War in 1989 to save babies and children in the USSR from dying of congenital heart defects. While breakthrough advances were benefiting children in the U.S., Soviet physicians isolated from major advances in cardiac surgery being made in the West remained unable to treat Russian children born with heart disease. The education-based program model pioneered by our founders led to great success, resulting in an excellent self-sustaining childrens heart center in St. Petersburg, which was publicly acknowledged as the countrys best infant open heart surgery program and became a national model. This accomplishment inspired our board of directors to expand Heart to Hearts mission and develop more centers and save thousands more children. Today, Heart to Hearts pediatric cardiac specialists continue to teach teams of doctors the art and science of pediatric open heart surgery throughout Russia and now in Latin America with the goal of every child having access to life-saving care.
