How Does The Technology Work

Polar H1/H2/H3/H6/H9/H10 Heart Rate Sensor | How to Change Battery

PPG sensors use four primary technical components to measure heart rate:

1. Optical emitters generally at least 2 LEDs that send light waves into the skin, although some PPG sensors are adding more emitters and varying light wavelengths. Because of the wide differences in skin thickness, tone and morphology associated with a diversity of people, most state-of-the-art OHRMs use multiple light wavelengths that interact differently with different levels of skin and tissue.

2. Photodetector the photodetector captures the light refracted from the user of the device and translates those signals into ones and zeros that can be calculated into meaningful heart rate data.

3. Accelerometer the accelerometer measures motion and is used in combination with the photodetector signal as inputs into PPG algorithms.

4. Algorithms the algorithms process the signals from the photodetector and the accelerometer into motion-tolerant heart rate data, but can also calculate additional biometrics such as VO2, calories burned, R-R interval, heart rate variability, blood metabolite concentrations, blood oxygen levels, and even blood pressure.

Buying Guide For Best Heart Rate Chest Straps

When youre sweating through a workout, you want to know youre getting the most out of your training session. Thats why its so important to be aware of your intensity level. With a heart rate monitor, you can do this easily. A heart rate chest strap is a type of heart rate monitor that allows you to keep tabs on your stats as you burn through your routine.

Which heart rate chest strap is right for you? That depends on what type of display you prefer, the strap material with which youd be most comfortable, and other features that might make the strap convenient.

What Is A Good Resting Heart Rate

According to the American Heart Association, a typical resting heart rate for adults is between 60 and 100 beats per minute .

Your resting heart rate is your heart rate when you are seated or lying down and are in a calm, relaxed state. A low resting heart rate is ideal and often associated with low blood pressure, a low body weight, and good physical fitness .

Older adults may have a higher resting heart rate, while children and people who are active or physically fit may have a lower resting heart rate. This is because their heart can keep a steady beat with less effort.

Other factors, such as medications, medical conditions, body size, and temperature, can also influence your resting heart rate.

How To Choose A Chest Strap Heart

When it comes to choosing the best heart-rate monitor chest strap for your workout, many of the factors in your buying decision will be based on personal preferences and your workout regimen. Here are a few factors to keep in mind while shopping.

Strap width: This comes down to personal preference, but before you buy, consider whether you’d be more comfortable with a heart-rate tracker that uses a slim strap or a wider one during your workout.

Module size: Some chest straps use tiny modules that don’t extend over the edges of the strap. Others, however, use larger monitors to measure your heart rate. Which heart-rate sensor you choose to track your workout also depends largely on personal preference, as well as how tight your running shirts are.

Internal memory: If you don’t like to hold your smartphone during your workout, opt for a heart-rate training monitor that can store your heart-rate data on its own built-in memory to store maximum heart rate, heart-rate variability and target heart rate. You can later transfer your heart-rate reading to your smart phone apps via your HR monitor’s companion app.

Metrics: Consider what you want your monitor to, well, monitor during your workout. Higher-end models capture real-time data covering everything from run cadence to stride length, as well as things like blood pressure, calorie burn and heart-rate variability to help you reach your fitness goal, while more basic models might track only your heart rate.

Heart Rate Training 101

When it comes to heart rate training, we can all get a little overwhelmed. You have to know your resting heart rate, max heart rate and something about zones. Its already hard enough to find time to workout, let alone find time to workout and track your heart rate. So why even bother with heart rate training?

How To Choose The Best Heart Rate Monitor Watch

With so many options available, it can be daunting to choose a reliable heart rate monitor watch.

The Fitbit Versa is our top pick, as it features 24/7 heart rate monitoring, which tracks your heart health over time and always displays your current heart rate, whether youre resting or exercising.

Furthermore, it shows your metrics on the main screen so that you dont have to navigate elsewhere.

Still, you may want to consider other factors like cost, customer reviews, and features.

Note that very few smartwatches only measure your heart rate. Most connect to your phone, and many offer features for athletes, such as GPS and activity tracking, or people with heart or lung problems, such as blood pressure and oxygen saturation monitoring.

Alternatively, if youre looking for the most accurate heart rate readings possible for example, to help manage your heart condition consider a chest monitor. This device straps around your chest and is much more precise than a smartwatch (

In particular, an elevated heart rate can also be a risk factor for future health issues, including heart disease and stroke .

Heart Rate Target Zones

Heart beatSensor with Arduino, Heart rate monitor system

A key benefit of an HRM is that it helps you maintain the optimal heart rate target zone for your specific goal. Higher-end models inform you of this via a digital display and/or an audible tone.

The target zone is a percentage range based on your maximum heart rate . Various algorithms have been developed to calculate an HR max estimate. The classic 220 your age formula is now considered inaccurate for older people. A revised formula, 208 0.7 x your age, is better.

The American Heart Association chart below offers a broad overview of HR values for target training zones and average HR max values. For more details on calculating your personal HR max and how training zones work, read How to Train Using Heart Rate Zones.

When To Talk With A Doctor

There are several instances when you should talk with a doctor about your heart rate, especially if its too low or high.

According to Smiley, Anytime you have a low heart rate , and feel dizzy, tired, or pass out, you should definitely see a doctor. If the heart rate is 50 beats or lower, even without symptoms, you should seek medical help.

She also notes that you should talk with a doctor if your heart rate is over 100 beats per minute when youre at rest or if its over 100 beats per minute and youre experiencing symptoms like dizziness, anxiety, or heart palpitations.

Heart Rate Monitor Features

Basic HRM models time your workout and give you continuous, average, high and low heart rate data, as well as the high, low and target heart rate reached during your workout. Many models can be partnered with a foot pod that attaches to your shoelaces to track your speed, distance and cadence.

Other models have GPS receiver capabilities to track speed and distance, also providing elevation and navigation functionality. The most advanced models have an extensive and ever-growing array of features.

Target zones: Basic models offer up to 3 target zones advanced models have from 3 to 6 target zones. With the capacity for multiple target zones, you can preprogram your heart rate monitor for a series of different workouts . If your HRM offers only a single aerobic target zone, you’ll need to reprogram it every time you want to change the exercise parameters.

Sport watch: Heart rate monitor watch models include features such as a clock, alarm, countdown timer and calendar.

Stopwatch and lap/split times: After each lap at a track or every mile on a marked-distance race course, hit the “Lap” button to see how your pace has changed throughout your workout or race .

Recovery heart rate mode: Tracks the time it takes your heart to return to its normal, resting rate. It’s a good indicator of cardiovascular fitness and especially important if your workouts include sprints or interval training.

When Apple Watch Measures Your Heart Rate

Pulsesensor Pulse Heart Rate Sensor Module For Arduino Pulse Sensor ...

When you use the Workout app, Apple Watch measures your heart rate continuously during the workout and for 3 minutes after the workout ends to determine a workout recovery rate. If you don’t see your heart rate, check your settings.

This information, as well as other data it collects, helps Apple Watch estimate how many calories youve burned. In addition, Apple Watch measures your heart rate throughout the day when youre still, and periodically when youre walking . Since Apple Watch takes these background readings based on your activity, the time between these measurements will vary. Apple Watch also calculates a daily resting rate and walking average by correlating background heart rate readings with accelerometer data when sufficient background readings are available. You can control which third-party apps have access to your health data from the Health app in Sources.

Some anomalies may appear in the displayed data, resulting in occasional heart rate measurements that are abnormally high or low.

Different Models Of Heart Rate Monitors

A heart rate monitor is a more scientific way to know how well you are doing, and it can help you keep track of your progress. While there are more devices hitting the market, including rings and bicep straps, there have been two predominant versions of heart rate monitors over the past decade: fitness trackers and chest strap monitors.

Fitness trackers

Fitness trackers have become quite popular over the last decade as theyre an easy way for people to track certain fitness goals like steps taken, miles run and even more detailed data like calories burned and, yes, your heart rate.

And over the years, Travers notes, technology with fitness trackers has evolved greatly, to the point where accuracy issues of the past have largely been ironed out. And as that tech has gotten better, prices of these devices have come way down, helping their popularity skyrocket.

If you think about 8-to-10 years ago, the only people who were wearing anything like this were serious runners and they were large, somewhat unwieldy devices, Travers says. Now, if you look around, everyones wearing a fitness tracker, whether its an Apple Watch, a Garmin, a Fitbit or something else.

Its letting you know where youre cardiovascular system is at, health-wise, he adds. The lower your resting heart rate is, the less work you heart was to do its normal daily function, which is key. The less stress on our heart to do that, the better off we are.

How Apple Watch Measures Your Heart Rate

The optical heart sensor in Apple Watch uses what is known as photoplethysmography. This technology, while difficult to pronounce, is based on a very simple fact: Blood is red because it reflects red light and absorbs green light. Apple Watch uses green LED lights paired with lightsensitive photodiodes to detect the amount of blood flowing through your wrist at any given moment. When your heart beats, the blood flow in your wrist and the green light absorption is greater. Between beats, its less. By flashing its LED lights hundreds of times per second, Apple Watch can calculate the number of times the heart beats each minute your heart rate. The optical heart sensor supports a range of 30210 beats per minute. In addition, the optical heart sensor is designed to compensate for low signal levels by increasing both LED brightness and sampling rate.

The optical heart sensor can also use infrared light. This mode is what Apple Watch uses when it measures your heart rate in the background, and for heart rate notifications. Apple Watch uses green LED lights to measure your heart rate during workouts and Breathe sessions, and to calculate walking average and Heart Rate Variability .

What Is the Stress Level Feature on My Garmin Watch?

Stress level is a feature found on many Garmin watches allowing a user to determine their current level of stress based on their heart-rate variability. When using the stress level feature, the watch uses heart rate data to determine the interval between each heartbeat. The variable length of time in between each heartbeat is regulated by the body’s autonomic nervous system. The less variability between beats equals higher stress levels, whereas the increase in variability indicates less stress. Some watches will prompt you when it detects a high level of stress offering you the option to reduce it through a breathing exercise. Some watches also provide all-day stress tracking so you can see your trends throughout the day and over time.

Training, physical activity, sleep, nutrition, and general life stress all impact your stress level. Wearing your device both day and night will return the most consistent, accurate results. If you are too active to determine stress level , a stress level will not be recorded.

What Do You Mean By Heartbeat

A persons heartbeat is the sound of the valves in his/hers heart contracting or expanding as they force blood from one region to another. The number of times the heart beats per minute , is the heartbeat rate and the beat of the heart that can be felt in any artery that lies close to the skin is the pulse.

Two Ways to Measure a Heartbeat

  • Manual Way: Heartbeat can be checked manually by checking ones pulses at two locations- wrist and the neck . The procedure is to place the two fingers on the wrist and count the number of pulses for 30 seconds and then multiplying that number by 2 to get the heartbeat rate. However, pressure should be applied minimum and also fingers should be moved up and down till the pulse is felt.
  • Using a sensor: Heart Beat can be measured based on optical power variation as light is scattered or absorbed during its path through the blood as the heartbeat changes.
