Strenuous exercise raises short-term risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest. Making sure your fitness club has a defibrillator can mean the difference between life and death.
When Don Stenta turned 50 last January, he decided to start working out more and train for a half-marathon. As director of Student Life Recreational Sports for The Ohio State University, Stenta oversees six fitness and recreation centers on campus, and began going for regular runs on the schools indoor track.
One day after a run, Stenta collapsedand woke up later in the hospital. Hed gone into cardiac arrest on the track, and two quick-thinking student employees had used one of the facilitys automated external defibrillator devices to restart his heart. They also performed CPR on Stenta until paramedics arrived.
Afterward, doctors determined that Stenta had a 95% blockage in his left anterior descending arteryoften called the widowmaker artery because blockages here are almost always fatal. They can also happen without warning.
Im the kind of person who always carries around 20 extra pounds, and I have a family history of heart problems in old age, Stenta says. But Ive always had normal blood pressure and normal cholesterol, and I didnt think I was in danger this young. Looking back, he says hed recently been feeling dizzy and tired while working out, but didnt think it was anything to be worried about.

In 2019, the top 10 causes of death accounted for 55% of the 55.4 million deaths worldwide.
The top global causes of death, in order of total number of lives lost, are associated with three broad topics: cardiovascular , respiratory and neonatal conditions which include birth asphyxia and birth trauma, neonatal sepsis and infections, and preterm birth complications.

Why Aeds Are So Important In Gyms
Although regular exercise helps strengthen the heart and lowers the risk of cardiovascular problems long-term, strenuous exertion doesincrease immediate risk for heart attack and sudden cardiac arrest. Thats especially true for people who are already at higher-than-normal risk, either because of lifestyle or genetic factors.
Young and healthy people are less likely to have heart problems while exercising, but it can still happen. In February, celebrity trainer Bob Harpera famously fit CrossFittersuffered a widowmaker heart attack and went into cardiac arrest at his gym.
Harper was also saved by bystanders who performed CPR and used the gyms AED. I will never ever walk into a gym again that doesnt have CPR, people that know their CPR, and theres an AED somewhere in that gym,the trainer said this morning on Today.
According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 people suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests each year throughout the United States. And many of these events happen while people are working out: A 2013 study in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that136 of 849 public, indoor sudden cardiac arrests reported over a 12-year period in and around Seattle occurred at either traditional or non-traditional exercise facilities.

What Country Has The Lowest Heart Disease
Males in Hong Kong have the lowest death rate for cardiovascular disease, the Russian Federation rate being about six times greater. For females, the lowest death rates are found in France, Hong Kong and Japan. All of these countries have rates less than a quarter of those in the Russian Federation.
How Else Can Gym
Dr. Walsh stresses that physical exercise remains one of the best ways to lower heart disease risk overalland that while exercise-induced cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, rates among young and healthy people remain very low.
Even when it does happen, outcomes are often better. In a 2013 study from the European Heart Journal, 46% of exercise-related cardiac arrest victims survived, compared to just 17% of victims whose cardiac arrest wasnt exercise-relatedeven after results were adjusted to account for age, location, and rates of CPR and AED use.
The message here is that we need to know our own risk factors for cardiovascular disease and have those addressed by a trusted physician, says Dr. Walsh. Exercise, in general, is a good thing, but we cant always predict every single cardiac event.
Thats also why its important to not only know how to use an AED, Dr. Walsh says, but to know how to perform CPR as wellso you can be prepared to help whether a defibrillator is available or not.
Taking a CPR certification course is always a good idea, says Dr. Walsh, and CPR should be performed by a certified person whenever possible. But in the event of an emergency, she says, you should not let lack of training stop you from attempting to save someones life.

Mortality Due To Any Cause
The likelihood of death increases as the disease progresses and symptoms become more severe. When compared to those without the condition, Canadian adults with diagnosed ischemic heart disease, who survived a heart attack and with diagnosed heart failure were three, four, and six times more likely to die prematurely respectively.
How To Operate An Aed
AEDs include step-by-step instructions and voice prompts, and are meant to be used by untrained bystanders. Anyone who witnesses a person collapse can operate an AED, as long as its confirmed that the unconscious persons breathing and pulse are absent or irregular.
Before using the AED, bystanders should call 911 so paramedics can be dispatched. If the AED isnt immediately available, one person should begin CPR and a second person should run to get the closest one. Users should check for puddles of water or move the unconscious person to a dry area before operating the device.
The device will instruct users to expose the persons chest and attach sticky pads with electric sensors to it. The machine uses these sensors to analyze heart rhythm, and, if needed, will let users know to press a button to deliver an electric shock.
After giving a shock, the machine will instruct users to perform CPR until emergency medical help arrives, or may prompt them to deliver another shock two minutes later.
Theyre user-friendly and easily taken off the wall or from their location, and they definitely save lives when used in time, says Dr. Walsh. But its very important to be familiar with them in general, and to know where exactly you can find them in an emergency.

Heart Disease Occurs More Often As Canadians Age
The prevalence of diagnosed ischemic heart disease increases as people age and is higher among men than women in all age groups.
Similar patterns are observed for acute myocardial infarction and heart failure . For instance, the prevalence and incidence of acute myocardial infarction among men 2544 years of age are on average about four times higher than those of women in the same age group. Nonetheless, as women and men get older than 65 years old, the gap in prevalence and incidence lessens. In fact, in 2012/13, there is almost twice as many women aged 85 years and older newly diagnosed with ischemic heart disease than men of the same age. As women live longer than men, they are more likely to be diagnosed with a heart condition in the old age.

What Are Cardiovascular Diseases
Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. They include:

Fewer people die at a young age
In this chart we see the breakdown of deaths by age bracket. Globally fewer and fewer people die at a young age.
In 2017, there were 56 million deaths globally nearly half of these were people who were 70 years or older 27% were between 50 and 69 years old 14% were between 15 and 49 only 1% were older than 5 and younger than 14 and almost 10% were children under the age of 5.
The age at which people die has changed significantly since 1990. Fewer people die at a young age. In 1990 nearly one-quarter of all deaths were in children younger than 5. In 2017, this had declined to just under 10%. In contrast, the share of deaths in the over-70s age bracket has increased from a third to half of all deaths over this period.
It is possible to change this chart to any other country or region in the world. In countries with good health the share dying at a young age is very low. In Japan more than 83% are 70 years or older.
Causes of deaths of children younger than 5

Hearts In The Americas
The regional arm of the World Health Organizations Global Hearts Initiative is led by the Ministries of Health in the Americas and supported by PAHO, and seeks to promote the adoption of global best practices in the prevention and control of CVD, including through better control of high blood pressure and prevention initiatives at the primary care level.
Evidence from 16 countries in the Region participating in the HEARTS in the Americas Initiative has shown that hypertension programs can be implemented efficiently and cost-effectively at the primary care level, which will ultimately result in reduced levels of heart disease and stroke.
Chile, which was one of the first countries to join the HEARTS Initiative, has been able to identify those most at risk of heart disease at the primary care level and ensure tailored and timely interventions that have helped to reduce the countrys overall rates of hypertension.
As part of HEARTS in the Americas Initiative, PAHO, with support from the United States Centers for Disease Prevention and Control , has also developed a CVD Risk Calculator app, which enables users to estimate their risk of heart disease and obtain advice on how to make healthier lifestyle choices.
Us Deaths From Heart Disease And Diabetes Climbed Amid Covid
NEW YORK The U.S. saw remarkable increases in the death rates for heart disease, diabetes and some other common killers in 2020, and experts believe a big reason may be that many people with dangerous symptoms made the lethal mistake of staying away from the hospital for fear of catching the coronavirus.
The death rates posted online this week by federal health authorities add to the growing body of evidence that the number of lives lost directly or indirectly to the coronavirus in the U.S. is far greater than the officially reported COVID-19 death toll of nearly 600,000 in 2020-21.
For months now, researchers have known that 2020 was the deadliest year in U.S. history, primarily because of COVID-19. But the data released this week showed the biggest increases in the death rates for heart disease and diabetes in at least 20 years.
I would probably use the word `alarming, said Dr. Tannaz Moin, a diabetes expert at UCLA, said of the trends.
Earlier this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that nearly 3.4 million Americans died in 2020, an all-time record. Of those deaths, more than 345,000 were directly attributed to COVID-19. The CDC also provided the numbers of deaths for some of the leading causes of mortality, including the nations top two killers, heart disease and cancer.
In raw numbers, there were about 32,000 more heart disease deaths than the year before.
Other possible explanations also point indirectly to the coronavirus.

What Are The Risk Factors For Cardiovascular Disease
The most important behavioural risk factors of heart disease and stroke are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use and harmful use of alcohol. The effects of behavioural risk factors may show up in individuals as raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, raised blood lipids, and overweight and obesity. These intermediate risks factors can be measured in primary care facilities and indicate an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, heart failure and other complications.
Cessation of tobacco use, reduction of salt in the diet, eating more fruit and vegetables, regular physical activity and avoiding harmful use of alcohol have been shown to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Health policies that create conducive environments for making healthy choices affordable and available are essential for motivating people to adopt and sustain healthy behaviours.
There are also a number of underlying determinants of CVDs. These are a reflection of the major forces driving social, economic and cultural change globalization, urbanization and population ageing. Other determinants of CVDs include poverty, stress and hereditary factors.
In addition, drug treatment of hypertension, diabetes and high blood lipids are necessary to reduce cardiovascular risk and prevent heart attacks and strokes among people with these conditions.
