It Tracks Heart Rate Accurately
For a more accurate look at your heart rate, youll want to look into a chest-strap monitor. Wrist-worn devices just arent as accurate, due to the distance of your wrist from your heart. To “prove” this, when testing the HRM-Pro, I wore the Fitbit Charge 5 to see how the heart rate monitors stacked up. Not only did the chest-worn HRM-Pro record changes in my pulse more quickly than the wrist-worn Fitbit, but it appeared to measure my heart rate more accurately, as the Fitbit overestimated my pulse at times: After one of my lighter-effort evening jogs, I checked my stats on the Garmin and Fitbit apps and found that while Garmin clocked my pulse around 165 beats per minute , a number I felt to be an accurate reflection of my effort Fitbit recorded a pulse of 180 bpm, a maximum effort I know I didnt reach that night.
Some fitness brands may also use different heart rate zones. Typically, heart rate is categorized into five zones, level one being a warm-up and level five being maximum effort. Garmin uses these five zones, which gives you a more nuanced picture of your effort compared to other brands that only use three or four.
How Accurate Are Fitbit Apple Watch Heart Monitors
Watch-like wristbands that monitor heart rate may not offer true readings during exercise, a small study finds.
Researchers at the Cleveland Clinics Heart and Vascular Institute tested four different wrist-worn heart rate monitors.
All worked pretty well at rest, said Dr. Marc Gillinov, the Cleveland Clinic cardiac surgeon who led the experiment. But as people exercised, the accuracy diminished.
None of the four devices achieved the accuracy of a chest strap monitor. In treadmill tests, the Apple Watch and Mio Fuse were the most accurate.
The other two devices fell short: Basis Peak, which is no longer being manufactured, overestimated heart rate during moderate exercise, and Fitbit Charge HR underestimated heart rate during more vigorous exercise, the study found.
Intel Corp. issued a safety recall last summer due to incidents of the Basis Peak overheating, causing burns or blisters on the skin. Intel and its Basis Science Inc. unit urge people to stop using the device and return it for a full refund.
In a statement, Fitbit defended its PurePulse technology, saying it performs to industry standards for wrist-based optical heart rate monitors, with an average absolute error of less than 6 beats per minute and an average error of less than 6 percent.
Fitbit said its trackers are not intended to be medical devices.

How Apple Watch Measures Your Heart Rate
The optical heart sensor in Apple Watch uses what is known as photoplethysmography. This technology, while difficult to pronounce, is based on a very simple fact: Blood is red because it reflects red light and absorbs green light. Apple Watch uses green LED lights paired with lightsensitive photodiodes to detect the amount of blood flowing through your wrist at any given moment. When your heart beats, the blood flow in your wrist and the green light absorption is greater. Between beats, its less. By flashing its LED lights hundreds of times per second, Apple Watch can calculate the number of times the heart beats each minute your heart rate. The optical heart sensor supports a range of 30210 beats per minute. In addition, the optical heart sensor is designed to compensate for low signal levels by increasing both LED brightness and sampling rate.
The optical heart sensor can also use infrared light. This mode is what Apple Watch uses when it measures your heart rate in the background, and for heart rate notifications. Apple Watch uses green LED lights to measure your heart rate during workouts and Breathe sessions, and to calculate walking average and Heart Rate Variability .

Keep Track Of What You Eat Too
For people who need accountability, Im in favor of using an app to track what you eat. A free downloadable food diary, such as Lose It! makes it easy to spot patterns and notice when youre running into trouble say, a daily afternoon stop for M& Ms or a routine bagel breakfast. Tracking can also add an element of mindfulness. Just knowing that you have to input what you eat may allow you to push the pause button and think for a moment about whether its worth it. And seeing that a handful of pretzels can set you back 100 calories might help you pass them up, particularly in light of the fact that youre probably not burning as many calories as you think you are.
And if you still enjoy the feedback from a wearable device, note that Apple Watch had the most accurate readings. Making sure you have a snug fit may also improve accuracy. You need good contact with your skin, says Scherbina. But perhaps think twice before gifting a tracker to the man in your life. Though the calorie burn was inaccurate for everyone, it was worse for men than women, she notes.

How To Check Your Heart Rate
You can check your heart rate any time using the Heart Rate app. Open the app, then wait for Apple Watch to measure your heart rate. You can also view your resting, walking, breathe, workout, and recovery rates throughout the day. To easily open the app, add the Heart Rate complication to your watch face or add the Heart Rate app to the Dock.
You can also turn on heart rate notifications, so you know if your heart rate remains above or below a chosen beats per minute , or to occasionally check for an irregular heart rhythm.

Understanding Apple Watch Hr Data
Real-time heart rate
When wearing the Apple Watch, you’re given continuous heart rate readings during exercise and can also view your average heart rate for the entire workout once you’ve finished.
But if you’re simply at your desk and want to see how your heart is getting on, head to the Watch’s Heart Rate app, which also provides insight into your resting, walking, and overall rate throughout the day.

Resting heart rate
But that’s not all. Swiping up will give you access to your daily resting heart rate and your walking average rate. Resting heart rate is a key measurement of your health, and keeping an eye on it can prove you’re getting healthier, and spikes can indicate tiredness, stress or a need to take things easy.
The Apple Watch calculates both of these metrics by correlating readings taken in the background with accelerometer data. As is the case with the standard heart rate screen above, a mini-graph will show you how this has changed throughout the day.
How Accurate Is Theheart Monitor Feature

Moreover, Applewatches maintain the most accuracy in their readings at all paces as comparedto wrist-monitoring watches from other brands. However, wrist-based hearttracking always falls behind when compared to a chest strap. A chest strapgives 99% matching results with a professional EKG, but a wrist-monitor showsvarying results. This brings us to the conclusion that the Apple Watch heartmonitor is an accurate device for measuring the heart rate but not muchreliable for serious heart patients. It might give misleading results withreduced accuracy at higher levels of activity.
Your Own Mileage May Vary
In short, the Apple Watchs heart rate monitor is accurate enough for the majority of consumers, particularly for fitness goals. On the medical side, there are still concerns about the data. But things are looking promising for the device.
While the Apple Watch isnt going to be quite as accurate as a medical device or a dedicated heart rate chest strap, its probably the best option that you can wear on your wrist and forget about.
And all of this is really ignoring the cases in which an Apple Watch reportedlysaved someones life. Those devices didnt need to be as accurate as a hospital ECG they just needed to be accurate enough.
With that in mind, the best piece of advice is to take your Apple Watchs heart rate data and warnings seriously. Dont overthink it if nothing is amiss. But if your Watch tells you something is wrong, go see your doctor.

What Doctors Think About The Apple Watchs Heart Monitor
While the Apple Watch has a top-notch fitness tracker, some doctors still have mixed feelings about the device. Not necessarily about its accuracy, but about the data that the device produces.
Neel Chokshi, a medical director at Penn Medicine, toldUSA Today last year that doctors just arent sure what to do about a lot of the data that fitness trackers produce.
At least one doctor cautioned that the ECG feature on the latest Apple Watches isnt nearly as accurate as the ones that hospitals have access to. And, contrary to what some users might think, it has not been proven to detect a heart attack.
And many medical professionals are still worried about the side effects of consumers having too much data about their own health at hand. Not only is some of that data medically useless, but having too much data about ones health could lead to patients worrying unnecessarily.

Nearly all consumer devices that track heart rate rely on optical sensors that continuously monitor the volume of your blood. In between beats, there is less blood volume at your wrist, and therefore more light that is reflected back to the sensor. But not all devices rely on the same kind of light.
Fitbits, Samsung watches, and several other brands rely on only green lights. These lights are simpler and cheaper to use than the infrared lights that power hospital-grade heart rate trackers but, because green light has a shorter wavelength, it is more readily absorbed by melanin, a natural skin pigment that is more prevalent in people with darker skin.
In short: Skin with more melanin blocks green light, making it harder to get an accurate reading. The darker your skin is, the harder it gets.
We could see that there some differences in accuracy between, for example, different skin types and skin colors, said Mikael Mattsson, a senior researcher at Swedens Karolinska Institutet and an author on one of the only papers to examine the link between heart rate tracker accuracy and race.
Vernon Ross, 49, a podcasting consultant in St. Louis, used his Fitbit Charge HR to help monitor his heart rate after he was diagnosed with a mildly elevated blood pressure in 2017.
The absorption effect is well-documented in research. But theres far less research about how and whether that effect has impacted the accuracy of consumer heart rate trackers.
