Can A Smartwatch Detect Heart Issues
Smartwatches can be beneficial for identifying certain heart issues.
Dr. Nick West, chief medical officer and divisional vice president at Abbotts vascular business, notes that heart rate monitoring watches may help detect abnormally fast or irregular heart rhythms, including atrial fibrillation.
According to West, There are early reports of smartwatches picking up early signs of heart attack from analyzed changes in electrical activity. However, he also states that this technology is still being developed.

If you want the tracker that promises the biggest battery life, it’s the Fitbit Charge 5 that you want.
Fitbit’s tracker promises up to 7 days, which we found lasted 5-6 days in our testing. If you use features like GPS, the battery will drop off quicker. Using it with the always-on display mode and those numbers can drop to 3-4 days.
The Whoop 4.0 in contrast promises up to 5 days and we found it lasted around 4-6 days in our testing. Like the Charge 5, there’s no form of quick charging support available, though Whoop’s charging setup means you can clip on its battery pack and wear it on top of your Whoop while you’re on the move.
We’d say the Charge 5 gets you a bit more battery off a single charge compared to the Whoop, which is surprising given the lack of display. We did like the portability of the battery pack you get with the Whoop, which does also give it appeal in spite of the lower battery numbers.
Why You Might See Higher Than Expected Strain Scores
While some people have complained about lower-than-expected strain scores, others have experienced the opposite.
As mentioned above, I recorded my highest-ever strain score while building a chicken coop. While Im sure using a hammer and drill and lugging lumber around for several hours increased my heart rate, I didnt have to go all out. In other words, I was much less exhausted building a chicken coop than I usually am after completing much shorter CrossFit workouts that lead to a much lower strain score .
So whats going on here?
The problem is that certain movements cause WHOOP to incorrectly report a higher heart rate than you actually have. For example, clapping your hands for several minutes or tapping them on a table as if youre playing a drum set leads to inflated heart rate readings, and thus higher strain scores.
I did the tap test in my office while wearing WHOOP and a Polar chest strap. While WHOOP showed a heart rate of over 110 beats per minute, my chest strap accurately reflected my heart rate, which hovered around 70 beats per minute.
That explains why preparing food, chopping onions or performing other common household chores can lead to high strain scores.
Update: I can confirm that moving the sensor from my wrist to larger body parts has fixed the problem. In other words, if I wear WHOOP on my hip, then chopping onions, clapping or tapping no longer causes inflated heart rate readings and strain scores.

How I Leverage Whoops Strain Score
To be perfectly honest, I dont care much about my strain score or the calorie burn reported in the WHOOP app.
Thats because the type of workouts I perform arent conducive to tracking cardiovascular strain. I explained the problem with tracking the strain of CrossFit workouts in the previous section, but I wanted to give you another example.
I have an AI-powered reduced-exertion high-intensity interval training bike called CAROL. Each ride on CAROL lasts for only 8 minutes and 40 seconds, but my heart rate only spikes during the two 20-second sprints that are part of the workout.
However, those two short sprints empty 30% of my muscle glycogen stores and activate certain metabolic pathways that improve my cardiorespiratory fitness at the same rate as a 45-minute run.
The problem is that none of the fitness trackers on the market can pick up on that, because they all rely primarily on heart rate information.
As a result, I build very little cardiovascular strain. Thats why I dont bother with WHOOPs strain scores.
As I explained in my article comparing WHOOP with the Apple Watch, calorie tracking is a gimmick because it relies on relatively unreliable data models and estimates of how many calories someone with your height, weight and gender might burn at rest.
Its not WHOOPs fault that the calorie burn the app reports might be way off its just that you cant determine actual calorie burn without telling the device what your basal metabolic rate is .

I know that there are pros and cons to WHOOPs subscription model vs. paying for the hardware up-front. What We Like About The Oura Ring
The Oura Ring is a well-made device that can be useful if youre looking to improve your sleep. Weighing just 4 to 6 grams , the Oura Ring is particularly light Ive barely noticed it on my finger. Compared with wrist wearables like the Fitbit Charge or Apple Watch, its more compact and discreetthe ring looks like a minimalist wedding band. Considering how small the Oura Ring is, the battery lasts a long time. I was able to wear the ring continuously for a week before needing to charge.
The accuracy of the Oura Rings sleep-tracking data was close to that of other sleep trackers weve tested, but it didnt stand out from the pack in this regard. In the companys most recent validation study , conducted on its first-generation model in 2016, the Oura Rings sleep staging agreed with polysomnographythe gold-standard sleep analysis youd receive at a sleep lababout 66% of the time. According to the validation study for SleepScore, our sleep-tracking app pick, SleepScore agreed with polysomnography 73% of the time, a result that suggests slightly higher accuracy. Of course, company-led validation studies need to be taken with a grain of salt. While Im excited about all the new features introduced in WHOOP 4.0, there are still a few things missing that could improve the overall platform.
Specifically, Im referring to
- Support for third-party chest straps .
- The ability to enter my basal metabolic rate .
- Integration with Apple Health.
Id also like to see additional integration with third-party platforms, such as Levels Health and Eight Sleep .
Customizable WHOOP Journal entries would also be a welcome addition because it would enable me to correlate new supplements, medication or lifestyle choices with improvements in sleep quality and recovery.
Last but not least, live HRV monitoring would be cool, so I could see how deep breathing or meditation impacts my HRV.
Update: After months of begging WHOOP to integrate with Apples HealthKit, the company has released a first beta version that does exactly that. Orginally, WHOOP only supported reading information from HealthKit, but the ability to write data to HealthKit was added in March 2022.
