Adderall And Anxiety: Are Adhd Drugs Good To Use For Panic Disorders

Nearly half of U.S. adults diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder also have some form of anxiety, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America . Having both conditions at the same time often adds to the struggle to function normally.

Anxiety is a mental health disorder characterized by excessive worry and fear, and ADHD makes it challenging for people to control their inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. Together, two can make life very difficult.

ADHD does not necessarily cause anxiety, but it can lead to an anxiety disorder in some people. The symptoms of both conditions often overlap, making it harder for people with ADHD to tell if they have an anxiety disorder.Healthline shares that while it can be hard to tell the two apart, experiencing both together can result in extreme conditions of symptoms that the two share. It gives the example that a person with ADHD may find it challenging to focus on what they are doing or following through with tasks they are responsible for completing.

How Addiction Happens Even If Adderall Is Prescribed

While many people abuse Adderall intentionally, many others start abusing Adderall unintentionally. This is because many people with Adderall prescriptions start to take more of the drug than they were prescribed in hopes that it will help them focus even more.

Some people with Adderall prescriptions will even take the drug longer than doctors prescribed them to because they think they still need to be medicated. Unfortunately, due to how addictive Adderall is, not following ones doctors orders when it comes to the drugs use can cause individuals to develop Adderall addictions.

Can Adderall Cause High Blood Pressure

Adderall Side Effects

Adderall is a stimulant with many effects. Before prescribing the drug, doctors will make sure that patients do not have heart abnormalities or other serious cardiac issues. Adderall may increase blood pressure and heart rate by an average of two to four millimeters of mercury and three to six beats per minute, respectively. However, some people can see more significant increases in their values for these markers when taking this medication.

Those who already suffer from high blood pressure or fast hearts should exercise caution if considering using this prescription to treat ADHD symptoms because it might worsen pre-existing conditions instead of treating them like intended.

Does Caffeine Affect All Adhd Medications

If the ADHD medication is considered a stimulant, then it will have an interaction with the medication. As with Adderall, a small amount of caffeine is not generally worrisome. But, you should always discuss the interaction with your doctor before taking any ADHD medication with caffeine.

Other common stimulant ADHD medications include:

  • Concerta
  • Methylin
  • Metadate

If you do take caffeine with an ADHD medication, take note of any and all side effects and report them back to your doctor. Remember, mixing ADHD medications with caffeine can also cause serious heart or blood vessel problems. Youll want to make sure your doctor is conducting tests regularly to monitor the Adderall and caffeine interactions.

Amphetamine Abuse Tied To Heart Attack At Young Age

3 Min Read

NEW YORK – Young adults who abuse amphetamines may be raising their risk of suffering a heart attack, a new study shows.

Texas researchers found that among more than 3 million 18- to 44-year- olds hospitalized in their state between 2000 and 2003, those who were abusing amphetamines were 61 percent more likely than non-users to be treated for a heart attack.

Whats more, the rate of amphetamine-linked heart attacks rose by 166 percent over the 4-year study period. That compared with a 4-percent rise in cocaine-related heart attacks, the researchers report in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Most people arent surprised that methamphetamines and amphetamines are bad for your health, lead researcher Dr. Arthur Westover said in a statement.

But we are concerned because heart attacks in the young are rare and can be very debilitating or deadly, added Westover, an assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.

Amphetamines stimulate the central nervous system and some are used to treat attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. But they are also frequently used illegally one potent form of amphetamine, methamphetamine, is a growing problem in many U.S. cities.

Cases of heart attack in young people have been linked to amphetamine abuse before, but the current study appears to be the first large- scale look at the epidemiology of the problem.

It helped organize my thoughts so I could focus on one single thing at a time. My school grades were slipping until I started taking Adderall IR. Tried the XR version but I find taking 10mg of the normal release 3 times throughout the day more effective . I can sleep after an hour and a half of taking it, so very little insomnia for me.

How Alcohol And Adderall Interact

Both alcohol and Adderall have the potential for abuse. Adderall is considered a schedule 2 drug that is only available by prescription for this reason. Adderall is a stimulant and alcohol is a depressant. This means that when you ingest both they will compete within your body and essentially trick your natural senses.

Drinking alcohol while taking Adderall will make it more difficult to tell how much alcohol youve consumed. Adderall counteracts the immediate symptoms and effects of alcohol and increases your chances of alcohol poisoning. Just because you dont feel like your drunk, does not mean youre not intoxicated.

Mixing Adderall and alcohol can ultimately lead to overconsumption and risky behavior. Both substances can enhance side effects and lead to overconfidence, aggression, and overall bad decision making. If you have a problem mixing alcohol and Adderall, it may be a symptom of a larger substance use disorder.

Adhd Medications May Be Unsafe For Those With Existing Heart Problems

“These medications are usually safe and can even be used in patients with a history of heart disease,” says Moorman. “But you just have to be cautious and avoid their use in patients with unstable heart conditions.”

That’s because the effects have a higher chance of potentially harming those at risk of heart attack or stroke in these cases, small changes in heart rate and blood pressure are more dangerous. If you have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or obesity, you should talk with your doctor before taking ADHD medication.

Brown says ADHD medications also carry more risks for those with congenital heart defects, a blood vessel disorder, or an overactive thyroid, and may also be unsafe for people with heart rhythm disorders like tachycardia.

Use Of Ritalin Other Stimulants Can Raise Heart Risks For Older Adults

THURSDAY, Oct. 28, 2021 — ADHD medications are increasingly being prescribed to older adults, and they may cause a short-term spike in the risk of heart attack, stroke and arrhythmias, a large new study suggests.

Stimulant medications, such as Ritalin, Concerta and Adderall, are commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder . But they are also increasingly being prescribed “off-label” to older adults, to combat conditions such as severe drowsiness, appetite loss and depression.

The new findings add to evidence that the drugs can pose heart risks.

Researchers found that on average, older adults starting on a stimulant showed a 40% increase in their risk of heart attack, stroke or ventricular arrhythmia within 30 days.

Ventricular arrhythmias are rhythm disturbances in the heart’s lower chambers, and some can be fatal.

In the study, stimulant users had double the risk of dying within a month of starting a stimulant, compared to older adults who were similar in terms of health but not using a stimulant.

The absolute risks were relatively small, said lead researcher Mina Tadrous, an assistant professor of pharmacy at the University of Toronto.

Over one year, 5 out of 100 stimulant users had a heart “event,” the study found. That compared with between 3 and 4 of every 100 non-users.

Why? It’s not clear, but Tadrous said it may be because of monitoring.

The findings were published Oct. 25 in JAMA Network Open.

Signs And Symptoms Of An Overdose

Dangers of an Adderall Overdose

As the brain develops a dependency on Adderall, it also builds up a tolerance to the drug, which causes the user to seek higher doses to achieve the same results. This increasing of dosage amplifies Adderalls side effects and can lead to an overdose.

There are many symptoms and signs that someone has overdosed. In acute overdose cases, signs and symptoms might include:

  • Restlessness
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Kidney damage or failure

Overdoses can lead to fatal poisoning, which is usually preceded by convulsions and coma. If an observer sees signs of an overdose on amphetamines, he or she is encouraged to consult a certified Poisoned Control Center for current advice.

Getting over an addiction or an overdose of Adderall can take time, but it is possible to reverse all the side effects, and neurotransmitter levels can return to normal levels. Medical detox is the safest way to get over an Adderall addiction.

Why People Abuse Adderall

While doctors usually prescribe Adderall to individuals that suffer from ADHD, many young people in high school or college use and abuse the drug to help them focus more on their schoolwork and stay alert longer so that they can study more. In fact, even adult professionals are known to abuse Adderall to help them focus and achieve more at work. Unfortunately, people that abuse Adderall for these reasons dont realize that the negative effects of their Adderall abuse will ultimately cause them to crash and become worse students or workers.

Another reason why people intentionally abuse Adderall is that they want to feel the euphoric effects that the stimulant medication gives off. Individuals that choose to abuse Adderall simply for its euphoric effects often dont have a prescription for the drug.

Can You Overdose On Adderall

Yes, ingesting too much Adderall can have serious side effects, including an overdose that can lead to death. What’s more, some people are more sensitive to stimulants than others, so the amount that could lead to an overdose varies from person to person.

Even a small amount of amphetamine could be fatal. Deaths have been recorded with as low a dose as 1.5 milligrams per kilogram of weight.

An Adderall overdose involves excessive stimulation of the sympathetic nervous systemwhich is responsible for activating the fight-or-flight response when theres a sign of danger.

Depending on the person and their motives, an overdose may be intentional or it could be accidental. It’s also important to note that Adderall can be lethal to animals if ingested.

Adderall And Illicit Substances

Heart Attacks Can Catch You Young: Know The Signs | FYI

Ingesting illicit substances is never advised, however mixing them with Adderall can prove to be even more problematic. In general, the strength and make-up of most illicit street drugs is unknown. So its difficult to determine how each substance will react with your body and Adderall.

Illicit stimulant substances like meth and cocaine will multiply the effects similarly to mixing Adderall and caffeine. However, both meth and cocaine are much stronger substances, and the risks associated with mixing with these stimulants are much greater. If you are concerned about chest pain and Adderall, or Adderall and heart palpitations associated with caffeine mixing Adderall with meth or cocaine is definitely much worse.

Illicit depressant drugs like heroin or other opioids will compete with the Adderall in your body, as it does with alcohol. However, opioids are much stronger and the risk of overdose is much greater. This is especially true with extremely strong opioids such as fentanyl. It only takes a small dose to be fatal.

Side Effects Of Adderall Use

As we just mentioned, taking Adderall can affect a person physically, mentally, and emotionally. Some of the physical, mental, and emotional side effects of Adderall use include the following:

  • Slowed speech
  • Fever

While many of the side effects of Adderall use are concerning, people that use them properly usually dont develop them bad enough or enough of them to cause them harm. That said, any adverse effects should always be reported to a medical professional.

Appetite Suppression And Weight Loss

28% of patients who take Wellbutrin experience weight loss greater than five pounds, and significantly fewer experience weight gain than patients who take other antidepressants. Wellbutrin is so widely linked to loss of appetite described as anorectic.

Weight loss and appetite suppression are two of the most common side effects of amphetamines like Adderall. Adderall and Wellbutrin have even been tested in the same studies for use against compulsive eating. Taking the two drugs simultaneously puts a patient at significant risk for suppressed appetite and weight loss to the point of malnourishment or bodily harm.

Liver Damage from Wellbutrin and Adderall

While Adderall rarely causes severe liver damage at prescribed doses, it can pose a more significant risk when taken recreationally. Amphetamines are long-associated with liver toxicity and damage, and even Adderall can pose a threat when combined with other medications that have the potential to affect liver health.

Wellbutrin bears a warning that patients with liver damage, especially cirrhosis of the liver, should be treated with extreme caution when being considered for a prescription. Wellbutrin has been linked to lasting liver problems, mostly in those whose livers could not process it properly. Combining Adderall and Wellbutrin may pose a significant risk for liver damage or toxicity, especially in patients who may have sustained liver problems in the past.
