What Is A Congenital Heart Defect
Congenital heart defects occur in about 1 out of every 100 newborns as a result of the heart or blood vessels around the heart not developing correctly. These defects, which can be mild or severe, interfere with the heart’s ability to work like it’s supposed to.

Although you may hear some physicians use CHD in reference to congenital heart disease, congenital heart defect is the more accurate term. Both phrases refer to the same thing.
Heart Defects In Infant May Predict Heart Problems In Birth Mother Later In Life

Women who give birth to infants with congenital heart defects may have an increased risk of cardiovascular hospitalizations later in life, according to new research in the American Heart Association’s journal Circulation.
The study of more than one million women is the first to show congenital heart defects in newborns may be a marker for an increased risk of their mothers developing heart problems, including heart attack and heart failure, years after pregnancy.
Researchers analyzed data on women who delivered infants between 1989 and 2013 in Quebec, Canada, who had critical, noncritical or no heart defects. They tracked the women up to 25 years after pregnancy for hospitalizations related to cardiovascular disease including heart attack, heart failure, atherosclerotic disorders and heart transplants.
Compared to mothers of infants without congenital heart defects, researchers found:
- 43 percent higher risk of any cardiovascular hospitalization in women whose offspring had critical heart defects and
- 24 percent higher risk of any cardiovascular hospitalization in women whose infants had noncritical defects.

The researchers tracked 12,300 teenagers who were part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.
They determined the BMIs of the teens when they were 11 to 18 years old in 1994 and 1995, and then looked at health outcomes when the teens were 33 to 43 years old in 2016 and 2018 .

Compared to a teenager without obesity, a teenager with obesity is 2.73 times more likely to develop diabetes, 2.19 times more likely to have a premature heart attack, and 1.57 times more likely to report poor adult health, Nagata says.
In general, teenagers who have a higher BMI are more likely in adulthood to have a higher BMI, and that is associated with these risks, he says.
