The Heart Rate Monitors Arent Free

Many people dont realize this, but if you use a heart rate monitor supplied by Orangetheory, it will cost extra. This is because the staff has to sanitize them in between classes and check them periodically to make sure they work properly, so the fees help cover the cost of that extra work.

The fee ranges from $5 to $10 depending on which kind you get , but that can easily add up if you take multiple classes per week.

It would be much more cost-effective to buy your own Orangetheory-branded heart rate monitor. You can also go without one and use another fitness tracker if you still want to track your heart rate zones. The only downside of doing this is that you wont get to see your stats on the monitor during class.

If You Feel Like Youre On The Verge Of Physical Exhaustion But Not Getting Any Splat Points Or If Youre Barely Breathing Heavy Yet Accumulating 30+ Splat Points Each Class It May Be Time To Adjust Your Heart Rate Zones

Orangetheory Fitness has a new way of making sure your heart rate is working even better than ever for you.

Whoa! you may say, I thought it was already working well for me!

It is. But your heart rate can do even more. Whether youve participated in one class or 100 classes, you know that Orangetheory is always striving to find ways to make you healthier and fitter in the simplest and fastest of ways. And, as an Orangetheory member, you also know that heart rate zones provide the best way to gauge cardiac intensity and thus improve fitness OTFs core mission from Day One.

Orangetheorys new way of calculating heart rate, which rolled out in May 2019, is even more effective than what youre doing now. Its even more personalised, too, scanning data from 20 of your past workouts to estimate new zones for you not your best friend, not your toughest competitor, not the person next to you in class. The zones being set are yours and yours alone.

This new calculation based on your past workout data will up your game. Plus, itll ramp up those calories you burn even after you leave the studio and step into your day.

Wed work hard, then the instructors would stop and wed put our fingers on our wrist or neck for 15 seconds and look at a chart on the wall to see where our heart rates were, Joel says.

This has been a crusade of mine for 25 years, he says. If we give people the wrong heart rates, they get discouraged and dont want to exercise.

Orangetheory Fitness Is Based On The Theory Of Post

Details about Orange Theory Fitness OT Beat Heart Rate Monitor ...

Orangetheory Fitness is rooted in a rather technical but less well known exercise science known as EPOC. Maybe you’ve heard muscleheads at your local gym gloating about their afterburn? Well, that’s essentially what EPOC, or post-exercise oxygen consumption, is.

The idea of EPOC is that if a person can keep “a certain maximum heart rate during a workout, they will continue to burn calories long afterward through an oxygen-burning process,” according to Inverse. This is where the Orangetheory premise of the five heart rate zones comes into play. The first zone is the easiest, while the fifth is the most intense and will probably feel uncomfortable. The infamous “orange zone” is the fourth zone. As noted by Inverse, Orangetheory claims that spending 25 to 30 minutes in zone two or three and 12 to 20 minutes in zones four or five will yield the best results.

A kinesiologist explained to the outlet, “The longer you spend in these high-intensity zones, the longer this ‘afterburn’ seems to last.”

What Is Orangetheory Fitness

Basically, Orangetheory Fitness comprises a spectrum of workout studios spread all over the US and beyond. They are a franchise, which means that while they are under one umbrella goal, each studios management is different.

The heart rate monitor reflects your heart rate on screens in the studio, determining your workout zone.

You will workout based on workout zones to reach the fourth goal, usually referred to as the orange zone. You are already using over 83 percent of your overall heart rate at the orange zone, hence an effective workout.

The Truth About Orangetheory Fitness

Orangetheory Fitness Heart Rate Monitors and App

Since its launch in 2010, Orangetheory Fitness has become an international fitness phenomenon thanks to the dynamic, science-based formula of the workout. Once you step foot into the clementine-hued studio, the premise is essentially to reach your maximum output as often as possible during the one-hour class.

Orangetheory has found fans around the world because no two workouts are the same. The format of the class is split into three sections: rowing, cardio, and strength-training, as noted by the Orangetheory website. No matter what level your fitness ability is at, the nature of the high-intensity interval training is sure to leave you out of breath. The popular concept is also rooted in technology and speaks to your inner competitive athlete. As participants wear heart rate monitors during the workout, their efforts and results are displayed on a screen, comparing the progress of each member in real time, as noted by the Daily Mail.

The ultimate aim is to reach what’s called the “orange zone” , which is 84 to 91 percent of your maximum heart rate. So what else is there to know about the company? Here’s the untold truth of Orangetheory Fitness.

Burns A Lot Of Calories

A single 60-minute Orangetheory class can burn an impressive 5001,000 calories.

During high intensity exercise, you exert a lot of energy. To do that, your body burns calories to support your activity. The number of calories you burn will depend on many factors, such as your body size, sex assigned at birth, fitness level, and workout intensity.

For example, a 170-pound person would burn roughly 269 calories in 20 minutes on a rowing machine, 257 calories in 20 minutes of running at a 6-mph pace, and 154 calories in 20 minutes of intense weight training, for a total of 680 calories .

On top of that, you may burn additional calories afterward if you spend at least 12 minutes in the orange and red zones during the workout.

Is Orangetheory Personal Training Worth It

Orangetheory doesnt offer personal training services. Most locations also have policies against approaching an Orangetheory coach about one-on-one training, even if he or she works as a personal trainer at another gym.

If youre concerned about the quality of the coaches, rest assured that theyre qualified and knowledgeable not just about the Orangetheory methodology but about the human body as well.

Many coaches have degrees in kinesiology, exercise science, or another related field, and some even have advanced degrees in those subjects.

Orangetheory coaches must also have personal training certifications from one of the following:

  • American College of Sports Medicine
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine
  • National Strength and Conditioning Association
  • American Council on Exercise

Additionally, all coaches are required to complete Orangetheorys week-long training program and must keep up with yearly continuing education requirements.

What To Expect In An Orangetheory Class

Youll need to arrive at least 30 minutes before your first Orangetheory class to fill out some standard paperwork, discuss your health and fitness goals, get set up on their heart rate monitors, and go over some general safety protocols.

One unique aspect of Orangetheory is their proprietary heart rate monitors, known as OTbeat. You use these to measure your heart rate to ensure youre achieving orange and red zones throughout each class.

In fact, your heart rate is posted on a screen at the front of the class to help you keep track of how long youve been in each zone. Ideally, youll want to earn 12 splat points, the equivalent of 12 minutes one splat per minute in the orange and red zones.

While classes vary, they are usually divided into three components: rowing, cardio, and strength training .

First, the rowing machine prioritizes muscular strength, endurance, and power. It helps get your heart rate up while targeting 85% of your muscles for a full-body workout .

Next, youll do interval cardio usually on a treadmill consisting of different speeds, elevations, and recovery times. If you cant use a treadmill, you can opt for another cardio machine, such as an exercise bike .

Finally, theres an open floor area for strength training. This can involve a wide range of activities, such as bodyweight exercises, weight training, or other floor exercises .

Attending an Orangetheory class has many benefits.

Orangetheory Fitness Locations Follow The Same Format No Matter Where You Are

Whether you’re in the U.S. or 10,000 miles away in Australia, the Orangetheory Fitness workout will seem familiar. So while no two sessions will be the same thanks to an ever-changing repertoire of exercises, a 60-minute class in both countries will follow the tried-and-tested ethos.

According to Prevention, in order to offer both cardio and strength training, an Orangetheory workout involves alternating blocks on the treadmill and the indoor rower. The publication explained that the warm-up usually lasts eight minutes and then each treadmill and rowing exercise amounts to about 20 to 30 minutes, though this will differ depending on the class. These sections will be interlaced with bodyweight and conditioning exercises, as noted by the Orangetheory website.

The dynamic mix aims to improve your agility, strength, and stability, as noted by Self, while boosting the caloric burn. And it likely keeps boredom at bay, too.
