Also known as myocardial infarction, heart attacks can occur to just about anyone. However, not all are fatal. Based on various factors, some people come through a myocardial infarction and go on to live a full life. Others may not. So, what exactly causes some people to survive heart attacks over others? Here is some vital information about heart attacks and what influences your chances of survival.

Complications Of A Heart Attack

Complications of a heart attack can be serious and possibly life threatening.

These include:

  • arrhythmias these are abnormal heartbeats. 1 type is where the heart begins beating faster and faster, then stops beating
  • cardiogenic shock where the heart’s muscles are severely damaged and can no longer contract properly to supply enough blood to maintain many body functions
  • heart rupture where the heart’s muscles, walls or valves split apart

These complications can happen quickly after a heart attack and are a leading cause of death.

Many people die suddenly from a complication of a heart attack before reaching hospital or within the 1st month after a heart attack.

The outlook often depends on:

  • age serious complications are more likely as you get older
  • the severity of the heart attack how much of the heart’s muscle has been damaged during the attack
  • how long it took before a person received treatment treatment for a heart attack should begin as soon as possible

What Can I Do To Recover After A Heart Attack

Take our quiz to see how much you know about cardiac rehabilitation.

If youve had a heart attack, your heart may be damaged. This could affect your hearts rhythm and its ability to pump blood to the rest of the body. You may also be at risk for another heart attack or conditions such as stroke, kidney disorders, and peripheral arterial disease .

You can lower your chances of having future health problems following a heart attack with these steps:

  • Physical activityTalk with your health care team about the things you do each day in your life and work. Your doctor may want you to limit work, travel, or sexual activity for some time after a heart attack.
  • Lifestyle changesEating a healthier diet, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and managing stressin addition to taking prescribed medicinescan help improve your heart health and quality of life. Ask your health care team about attending a program called cardiac rehabilitation to help you make these lifestyle changes.
  • Cardiac rehabilitationCardiac rehabilitation is an important program for anyone recovering from a heart attack, heart failure, or other heart problem that required surgery or medical care. Cardiac rehab is a supervised program that includes
  • Physical activity
  • Education about healthy living, including healthy eating, taking medicine as prescribed, and ways to help you quit smoking
  • Counseling to find ways to relieve stress and improve mental health

Widowmaker Heart Attack Survival Statistics Point To A 12% Survival Rate

One of the most horrifying heart attacks is the widowmaker. For those of you who dont know what that isits a heart attack caused by a blockage in the main artery, which comes down the front of the heart. Based on widowmaker heart attack statistics, if one experiences this kind of heart attack outside of the hospital, their survival rate is only 12%.

What Is Coronary Artery Disease

Heart Attack Mortality Trends

Coronary artery disease is the buildup of plaque in your coronary arteries. Over time, plaque can harden or rupture . Hardened plaque also reduces blood flow. A ruptured plaque can cause a blood clot to form on the surface of the plaque. If the clot cuts off all blood flow through a coronary artery, it causes a heart attack.

CAD is also called atherosclerotic heart disease or coronary heart disease. Its the most common type of heart disease in the United States and one of the leading causes of death for both men and women.

The good news is that CAD can be prevented, and often reversed with lifestyle changes and medical treatment.

Cardiac Arrest Isnt A Heart Attack

Cardiac arrest and heart attacks arent the same, though the terms are often used interchangeably.

Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.

Cardiac arrest is caused when the hearts electrical system malfunctions and the heart stops beating properly.

A heart attack is usually caused by a blockage that restricts or stops blood flow to the heart. The loss of blood supply causes heart muscle tissue to die.

Comparison With Other Studies

There is considerable variation in previous heart failure survival estimates depending on the study setting. People with acute heart failure recruited from hospital inpatient populations have comparatively poor outcomes. Among 12440 people with heart failure in the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Long-Term registry, one year mortality was 23.6% for people with acute heart failure and 6.4% for those with chronic heart failure across Europe.34 Despite initiatives in many countries to improve care for people with heart failure, success has been limited. The most recent annual national heart failure audit in England reported one year mortality rates of 29.6% among people admitted to hospital with heart failure. This rate had not improved for the previous six years despite service restructuring to provide patients with care from specialist heart failure teams during admission and immediately after discharge.10

Psychological Outcomes Of Cardiac Arrest Survival

The rates of negative psychological outcomes among cardiac arrest survivors is quite high. Studies reveal that 45 to 50 percent of survivors report symptoms of depression, more than a quarter experience PTSD, and as many as 61 percent experience anxiety.2 Psychological difficulties co-occur in some survivorsspecifically, those that report symptoms of PTSD are also likelier to have symptoms of depression and anxiety. These conditions are associated with lower quality of life, and people who also experience cognitive and functional deficits following their cardiac arrest were more likely to struggle with psychological challenges.3

A smaller but important subset of cardiac arrest survivors emerges from the experience with increased psychological resilience, and view it as a positive event in their lives.4 A full understanding of the factors that may predispose patients to follow one mental health trajectory or the other are not well understood. However, one of the main factors in a positive transformational change after cardiac arrest are the ill understood reports of cognitive experiences and a state of painless and non-traumatic visual and auditory awareness of resuscitation.

Can You Survive Commotio Cordis

New Plan Increases Cardiac Arrest Survival Rate

When this condition does occur, it’s extremely important to start CPR and defibrillation in a timely manner, Torres said.

You want to start CPR within two minutes, and they had defibrillators on hand which Im sure they used during CPR to try and get him resuscitated, he said, adding that the paramedics springing into immediate action likely saved Hamlin’s life.

According to a 2009 literature review of commotio cordis , resuscitation within 3 minutes resulted in a survival rate of 25%, and that rate dropped to 3% when resuscitation is delayed beyond 3 minutes.

Cardiac arrest is one of the most time-sensitive diseases in all of medicine. If CPR is not started right away, the chance of survival falls 10% to 15% per minute without CPR, Dr. Benjamin Abella, director of the Center for Resuscitation Science at the University of Pennsylvania, tells TODAY.com.

It is a very horrifying, rare thing to witness a cardiac arrest live … that is a real trauma, he continues, adding that he hopes Hamlins family, teammates, coaches and other witnesses get the support and resources they need to heal.

Azar added: “Kudos to the EMTs and everyone there who on the spot.”

After what happened on the field, the next step was getting Hamlin to a hospital for further evaluation and treatment, Torres said.

“We’ll know in the next 24 hours or so how hes going to do,” Torres said.

Causes Of A Heart Attack

Coronary heart disease is the leading cause of heart attacks.

CHD is a condition in which the major blood vessels that supply the heart get clogged with deposits of cholesterol, known as plaques.

Before a heart attack, 1 of the plaques bursts , causing a blood clot to develop at the site of the rupture.

The clot may block the supply of blood to the heart, triggering a heart attack.

What Are The Symptoms Of Coronary Artery Disease

The symptoms of CAD may differ from person to person, and they may also depend on how severe the disease is. Some people with CAD may not experience any symptoms at all. However, for others, CAD can lead to chest pain or a heart attack.

The most common symptom of CAD is chest pain or angina. Angina is usually described as a pressing or squeezing sensation in the chest that can spread to the shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back. It often occurs during physical activity or emotional stress and goes away with rest or nitroglycerin.

Other symptoms of CAD can include shortness of breath, fatigue, lightheadedness or dizziness, and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to see your doctor as soon as possible.

CAD often has no signs or symptoms, especially in its early stages. Thats why its important to get regular checkups, so your doctor can detect CAD before it leads to more serious problems, such as a heart attack or stroke.

There are many things that can increase your risk for CAD, including:

  • High blood pressure

Coronary Artery Disease Is The Cause Of The Majority Of Heart Attacks

CAD is caused by plaque buildup in the wall of the arteries that supply blood to the heart.

Plaque buildup causes the inside of the arteries to narrow over time, which can block blood flow. Or, the cholesterol deposits can spill into the artery and cause a blood clot.

A complete blockage of a coronary artery means you experienced a STEMI heart attack, or ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

A partial blockage is called an NSTEMI heart attack, or a non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction.

Can Coughing Help You Survive A Heart Attack

Cardiac arrest survival rate rises as more people learn CPR

This is generally not helpful, according to the American Heart Association. In a hospital setting, a nurse or other healthcare provider may instruct someone to cough forcefully and repetitively during the initial seconds of a sudden heart rhythm problem. This is to try to maintain blood flow to the brain for a few seconds. Outside of a hospital, coughing really isn’t useful and “cough CPR” is a myth.

What Are The Symptoms Of A Cardiac Arrest

The symptoms of sudden cardiac arrest are immediate and drastic. They include:

  • Sudden collapse
  • Loss of consciousness

Other signs and symptoms may occur before a sudden cardiac arrest, such as fatigue, fainting, blackouts, dizziness, chest pain, shortness of breath, weakness, palpitations or vomiting. However sudden cardiac arrest often occurs with no warning.

Urgent treatment is required to ensure blood flow around the body is restored, and the heart begins beating again.

What’s The Outlook For Commotio Cordis

The outlook for commotio cordis, especially if you don’t get immediate and rapid medical attention, isn’t good. According to research, about 6 out of 10 people survive after commotio cordis.

Research also shows that Black people have lower rates of survival compared to white people with this condition.

Your odds of surviving are lower if it happens at home or during a recreational sporting event rather than an organized competitive sporting event. The difference lies in how soon you get medical attention after you have symptoms of commotio cordis.

What Type Of Heart Attack Is Most Fatal

CDC: U.S. deaths from heart disease, cancer on the rise

All heart attacks are dangerous and can affect patients differently depending on their current health status. However, you may have heard of a widowmaker heart attack. This type of STEMI myocardial infarction involves the critical or total blockage of the left anterior descending artery.

When a blockage like this occurs at the beginning of the vessel, it can have devastating or fatal results. In fact, only about 12% of people who suffer a widowmaker outside of a hospital setting survive.

Because the LAD artery runs down the front main side of the heart, stopping the blood supply at this crucial point means the rest of the artery and the entire front of the heart becomes compromised, and the heart muscle will start to die. This type of heart attack is extremely serious and requires immediate intervention from emergency healthcare professionals.
