How Apple Watch Measures Heart Rate

Apple Watch measures a users heart rate about every 10 minutes while resting, every minute during a workout, and in real time when the heart app is open on the Watch. Your heart rate will also be measured for three minutes after you finish a workout to measure your recovery heart rate.

Infrared and LED lights on the back of the Watch shine on the skin, and sensors detect the blood flow through your wrist while your heart rate is being measured.

The Watch then records your heart rate and keeps a history of that information, both on the Watch and on your paired iPhone. By using your Watch and your phone, you can see historic information about your heart rate, heart rate variability, resting heart rate, walking heart rate and more.

You can also get alerts when your resting heart rate exceeds a certain level.

How Often Does Apple Watch Track Heart Rate

The ECG app is exclusive to Apple Watch Series 4, which sports a new ...

The Apple Watch measures heart rate continuously during a workout, and for three minutes after it ends to determine recovery. The purpose of this is to not only monitor heart rate levels, but also to calculate calories burned during a workout. While some workouts like running or cycling provide better results due to their rhythmic nature, others like tennis or boxing might not be as accurate. Either way, Apple recommends always choosing the right workout on the Watch to get the best results.

Apart from this, the Apple Watch tracks your heart rate through the day basically the entire time it’s strapped to your wrist. It’s advisable to set up heart rate notifications because of this. If your heart rate goes higher or lower than a chosen BPM, Apple Watch will send you a notification. Additionally, the watch will continue to check for irregular heart rate notifications through the day to check for signs of atrial fibrillation . While the Apple Watch‘s heart rate readings can’t be compared to a medical device, it is a useful baseline monitor for keeping continuous tabs on heart rate, and has provided life-saving alerts to users on multiple occasions.

    Heart Rate & Stress Monitor

The Heart Rate and Stress Monitor app is a great stress monitor app for Apple Watch that integrates with Apple Health. Its heart rate monitoring feature can help you determine your stress level by interpreting your heart rate variability.

If youre worried about your heart rate, this app will show you your stress levels in a more comprehensive manner. However, you should consult your physician before downloading any stress monitor apps to ensure your health.

    Accurate Heart Rate Monitoring

The heart rate monitor built into the Apple Watch is one of the most accurate you’ll find in any fitness tracker or smartwatch.

It manages this via built-in photodiodes which detect a series of flashing green LED lights. By flashing those lights hundreds of times per second on a wearer’s wrist, the watch can track the flow of blood through your arteries. This allows it to chart how many times the heart beats per minute .

Although the Apple Watch’s heart rate monitor shouldn’t be considered medical grade, it is more accurate than similar fitness trackers with wrist-based tracking. When tested against an EKG machine , the Apple Watch measured roughly 91% accuracy.

This precision makes the Apple Watch deal for anyone who wants to see how hard they’re working while exercising and can also provide information on other important health aspects, such as sleep disorders or irregular heartbeats.

For instance, Desai says that “a spiking heart rate during sleep can sometimes indicate sleep apnea where someone stops breathing due to airway obstruction or brainstem respiratory drive.”

How variable your resting heart rate is can also indicate stress levels, since your heart rate tends to spike when you’re stressed.

    Try Cleaning The Watchs Sensors

The Apple Watch ECG found something unexpected about my heart

Before you do anything drastic, try giving your watch and its sensor a good cleaning.

The best way to clean your Apple Watch is to wipe it with a nonabrasive, lint-free cloth. You can lightly dampen the cloth with some water, a 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipe, or Clorox Disinfecting wipe.

All you need is a little bit of water to clean your watch. You should not use soap or other cleaning products to clean your Apple Watch. While youre at it, you might as well clean your watch band too!

    Premium Has A Serious Glitch

The big advantage of the premium cardiogram app subscription is the ability of the app to alert you to elevated heart rate and low heart rates that could be indicative of a heart problem. You adjust the settings for high and low bpm. The default high heart rate setting is 129 beats per minute. The problem I have encountered numerous times since I started my subscription is that I get high heart rate notifications from cardiogram while I am working out in cardio sessions. These alerts come even though I have opened and am using my exercise app on Apple Watch 4 which syncs to cardiogram. Cardiogram app recognizes that I am in a workout as when I finish my workout by selecting end workout I get a nice workout display on the cardiogram app. I shouldnt be receiving high heart rate alerts during a workout as I am trying to reach my target heart rate which is almost 150 bpm. Cardiogram premium should have different high heart rate alert settings: one for during workouts which for me might be 160 bpm and another for when I am not exercising which would be a lot lower. I agree I can change the settings before and after each exercise period but who will remember to do this and for the price of this app this should have been thought through. Also at first I believed the premium app said they would respond to comments submitted thru the app in 24 hours. Now it says 4 business days. I sent an inquiry almost a week ago and have not had a response.

How Does Wrist Temperature Data On Apple Watch Work

How to use the ECG app on Apple Watch

The Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra measure wrist temperature to give an indication of your body temperature. Body temperature is affected by a number of things, from diet and exercise or alcohol intake to menstrual cycles, illness and sleep environment.

In order to start gathering wrist temperature data, the Apple Watch Series 8 or Watch Ultra will need around five nights to collect measurments and determine your baseline wrist temperature. The smartwatches will then be able to determine nightly changes to that baseline.

Apple says: “While you’re sleeping, Apple Watch samples your temperature every 5 seconds. This design improves accuracy by reducing bias from the outside environment. Advanced algorithms then use this data to provide an aggregate for each night that you can view as relative changes from your established baseline temperature in the Health app.”

For those who use Cycle Tracking, the Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch Ultra should be able to detect ovulation estimates and improve cycle tracking data.

How I Track My Heart Rate During Workouts

To accurately view my progress during workouts, I ignore the Apple Watch results. I know they arent fully accurate. On a practical level, its hard to look over at my watch while Im racing on the treadmill. Instead, I use the Wahoo Bluetooth monitor along with the Fitness App to start my workout. That app tracks my progress over time. I then switch over to the Rock My Run app. That app reads data from my Wahoo and shows me my heart rate while listening to music with a high BPM The cool thing about that app is the music gets faster when my heart rate increases. The faster music motivates me. I then look at my iPhone to see my progress and push my heart rate.

Best External Heart Rate Monitors For Iphone And Apple Watch 2022

We’ve tested these heart-rate monitors with our Apple devices

Even though your Apple Watch comes with a heart rate monitor built-in, which is an excellent estimation, the best external heart rate monitors for iPhone and Apple Watch can ensure your fitness data is as accurate as possible.

Your Apple Watch measures the pulse from your wrist, which is fine for estimation, but if you’re an athlete or training for a big event like a marathon, these dedicated devices can provide more accurate data. The Apple Watch only has so much battery life, and these intense sessions can drain the battery faster than you’d like due to constant heart rate monitoring.

Instead, you should consider an external device, like our all-rounder recommendation Scosche’s Rhythm+ 2.0 Monitor Armband, especially if you can snap one up for Black Friday. Our preferred external heart rate monitors for Apple Watch and iPhone users can provide more detailed, more accurate fitness data for people who take their training seriously.

In practice, it’s significantly more comfortable than wearing a chest strap during heavy-duty workouts while being about as accurate. The Rhythm+ uses green and yellow oximeter sensors to get a more precise look at your heart rate and blood flow than just the Apple Watch’s green sensors alone. Having more sensors also means that it updates much more frequently than the Apple Watch.
