How To Use The Ecg App

The ECG app can record your heartbeat and rhythm using the electrical heart sensor on Apple Watch Series 4, Series 5, Series 6, or Series 7* and then check the recording for atrial fibrillation , a form of irregular rhythm.

The ECG app records an electrocardiogram which represents the electrical pulses that make your heart beat. The ECG app checks these pulses to get your heart rate and see if the upper and lower chambers of your heart are in rhythm. If theyre out of rhythm, that could be AFib.

The ECG app is currently available only in certain countries and regions. Learn where the ECG app is available.

*The ECG app is not supported on Apple Watch SE.

How Does The Continuous Heart Rate Tracking Work

Polars Continuous Heart Rate feature is based on timed measurements and on your wrist movements.

The timed measurement checks your heart rate at regular intervals, and if your heart rate is elevated during the check, the feature starts to continuously track your heart rate. Continuous tracking of your heart rate can also start based on your wrist movements, for example, when youre walking with a fast enough pace with your arms swinging. The continuous tracking of your heart rate stops automatically when your activity level drops low enough.

When your Polar device detects that youve been sitting for a long time, your heart rate is tracked continuously in order to find the lowest heart rate reading of your day.

Target Heart Rates Chart

What should your heart rate be when working out, and how can you keep track of it? Our simple chart will help keep you in the target training zone, whether you want to lose weight or just maximize your workout. Find out what normal resting and maximum heart rates are for your age and how exercise intensity and other factors affect heart rate.

Factors That Can Affect Workout Heart Rate Tracking

How To Use Your iPhone 5s, 5c and 5 As A Heart Rate Monitor – iPhone Tips

A few factors can affect your Apple Watchs ability to measure your heart rate.

Movement, especially dynamic movement, makes it harder for your Watch to measure your heart rate. It has an easier time tracking your heart rate during steady movements like walking or running, than during erratic workouts like boxing.

The LEDs and sensors are located on the bottom of the Watch. If dirt, grime, or sweat builds up, it can make them less effective. Give the bottom of your watch a wipe with a damp clean cloth.

Also, there are factors that make your heart rate harder to measure. The sensors detect surface blood flow and if blood flow is reduced to your wrist, its harder for the Watch to get a read. Cold weather is a big one here theoretically, so are overhead gymnastic movements or any lifting that uses compression straps on your arms.

Receive Low Cardio Fitness Notifications

Apple Watch can estimate your cardio fitness level by looking at your heart rate while you walk or run outdoors, and notify you if its low. Depending on your age and sex, your cardio fitness will fall into one of four ranges: Low, Below Average, Above Average, or High. If your cardio fitness level falls in the Low range, youll receive a notification on your Apple Watch. If it stays low, youll receive a notification every four months.

Note: This feature may not be available in all regions.

  • In the Health app on your iPhone , tap Browse, tap Respiratory, then tap Cardio Fitness.

  • Follow the onscreen prompts to turn on Cardio Fitness notifications.

  • You can also look in the Cardio Fitness section of the Health app to see your cardio fitness measurements and the range they fall into. Tap Show All Cardio Fitness Levels.

Note: For best results, the back of your Apple Watch needs skin contact for features like wrist detection, haptic notifications, blood oxygen level measurements , and the heart rate sensor. Wearing your Apple Watch with the right fitnot too tight, not too loose, and with room for your skin to breathekeeps you comfortable and lets the sensors do their job. For more information, see the Apple Support articles Wearing your Apple Watch and Your heart rate. What it means, and where on Apple Watch youll find it.

    Check The Band And Positioning

To consistently track your heart rate, your Apple Watch needs to be able to detect it. If its not correctly positioned on your wrist, itll struggle to get reliable readings.

Apple recommends that your Watch is snug, but comfortable. It should stay fixed in place while you exercise, but it shouldnt cut off blood flow. You might need to tighten it a little bit for workouts, especially if you dont like the feeling of a tight band around your wrist throughout the day.

While what band you use shouldnt affect the heart rate reading, it can affect how comfortable your Watch is when you wear it tight enough to get a good heart rate reading. The Sports Band, Sports Loop, Nike Sports Band, and Nike Sports Loop are all designed to be comfortable when worn tightly during exercise. The Sports Loops, in particular, are easy to adjust as needed.

Other bands, like the Leather Loop or Steel Link Bracelet, just arent as nice when youre sweating.

Apple recommends you wear your Watch faceup on the top of your wrist. However, because of my hairy wrists, I actually got more consistent heart rate readings putting it on the underside of my wrists when I run. This shouldnt be an issue for most people, but give it a shot if youre struggling to get steady readings while running.

Check Your Heart Rate With No Accessories

Can You Use Your iPhone As A Heart Rate Monitor

The iPhone 8 has a hidden feature. It can be used to check your heart rate even if you don’t have an accessory with a dedicated fitness tracker like a Fitbit Charge HR. It’s a feature Apple didn’t intend either.

Using an app like Instant Heart Rate you can actually use the camera and its flash to check your heart rate. What this does is to light up your finger, letting the camera see the blood flow in your veins.

The iPhone 8 has a super-powered quad-LED flash, making it even better for the job.

Why Wont My Apple Watch Show My Heart Rate

If, for some reason, the heart rate monitor on your Apple Watch stops working, you may need to restart or reset the device. Press and hold the Side button until the power off slider bar appears and slide it to turn off Apple Watch. Press and hold the Side button again until the Apple Watch logo appears.

What Factors Can Affect Resting Heart Rate

Several factors can affect resting heart rate: stress, alcohol or caffeine intake, or fever usually raise resting heart rate, while regular exercise or meditation can lower it. Air temperature and certain medications can also affect resting heart rate.

Heart-rate zones, which are percentages of your maximum heart rate, can help you determine the intensity of your workout or activity.

Track Those Stairs And Those Steps 24/7

The iPhone 8 has a special processor inside that keeps an eye on its motion sensors, even when the phone is sleeping’ in your pocket. With an app like Health or a third-party alternative such as Fitbit, it lets you track your activity all day.

Just like a dedicated fitness tracker, it’ll log your steps. 10,000 a day is a much better way to keep the doctor away than eating an Apple. And iPhone 8 is even better than some wrist activity trackers too because it logs the number of stairs you climb as well as how many steps you walk.

If you have to climb up five flights to get to your office, you might as well get some credit for it.

How Do I Track Heart Rate With My Fitbit Device

Learn how Fitbit tracks your heart rate day and night, and see tips to get a more accurate reading.

When your heart beats, your capillaries expand and contract based on blood volume changes. To determine your heart rate, the optical heart-rate sensor in your Fitbit device flashes its green LEDs many times per second and uses light-sensitive photodiodes to detect these volume changes in the capillaries above your wrist. Then your device calculates how many times your heart beats per minute . The optical heart-rate sensor detects a range of 30-220 bpm.*

We use green LEDS because they maximize the signal detected from the capillaries near the surface of the skin. The optical heart-rate sensor also uses infrared light to determine when the device is on your wrist to improve the accuracy of your heart-rate data.

*This range applies during sleep while youre awake, the range is 40-220 bpm. On Fitbit Versa 2, the range is 30-250 bpm.

Swipe up on your clock face to see your current heart rate and either your heart-rate zone or resting heart rate . To see heart rate details, tap or swipe .

If your device has an Exercise app, you can check your real-time heart rate and heart-rate zone during a workout. Note that your device doesn’t track your heart rate during swims.
