  • Body size. People who have severe obesity can have a slightly faster pulse.

  • Caffeine and nicotine. Coffee, tea, and soda raise your heart rate. So does tobacco.

What Is A Healthy Resting Heart Rate For My Age

For adults over the age of 18, a healthy resting heart rate is generally considered one that falls between 60 and 100 bpm, says Dr. Mehdi Razavi, director of Texas Heart Institute‘s Electrophysiology Clinical Research and Innovations Department.

For elite athletes, the healthy range for a resting heart rate is lower between 40 and 70 bpm.

The maximum heart rate is the highest heart rate achieved during maximal exercise. One simple method to calculate your predicted maximum heart rate, uses this formula:

220 – your age = predicted maximum heart rate

Example: a 40-year-old’s predicted maximum heart rate is 180 beats/minute.

Your actual maximum heart rate is most accurately determined by a medically supervised maximal graded exercise test.

What Are Heart Palpitations

A heart palpitation is when you suddenly become aware of your heart beating, usually in an irregular way. Sometimes you can feel it in your ears or your chest when youre lying down. Your heart beat may feel:

  • too fast or slow
  • like its fluttering
  • like its thudding, or pounding.

It is not unusual to feel heart palpitations occasionally and mostly they are harmless. However if youre experiencing them on a regular basis, see your doctor.

So Whats A Good Resting Heart Rate

According to the American Heart Association , a heart rate range between 60 and 100 beats per minute can be considered normal.

The best time to check your resting heart rate is upon waking from a peaceful nights sleep before you do any exercise or down that first espresso.

Of course, theres more than just physical activity and caffeine that can affect your heart rate. Medication , hormones, stress and anxiety can also send your heart all aflutter or slow it down. And if youre an athlete you may find that your resting heart rate is actually much lower than the average person .

Resting Heart Rate by Age:

From the moment were born, our hearts are working hard to keep us alive and support our growth and development. For the first month out of the womb, your normal resting heart rate would have ranged from 70 to 190 bpm, and for the first year, it would have been 80 to 160 bpm.

As we get older, our resting heart rate gradually decreases as the heart muscle grows in strength. According to the National Institute of Health, the normal resting heart rates by age are as follows:

  • 1 to 2 years 80 to 130 bpm
  • 3 to 4 years 80 to 120 bpm
  • 5 to 6 years 75 to 115 bpm
  • 7 to 9 years 70 to 110 bpm

Once we reach 10 years old, our heart rate should fall within the normal range of 60 to 100 bpm. This range is considered healthy for children , teenagers, adults, and seniors.

How To Take Your Resting Heart Rate

The best time to check your resting pulse is when you’re relaxed, so do it before you perform any sort of strenuous activity or wait for at least two hours afterward. First thing in the morning before you’ve had caffeine is typically a good time in that regard. So is right before you go to sleep, says Dr. Razavi, who recommends taking your resting heart rate once a day, so you can compare readings for the most accurate number.

Most fitness trackers or wearables can provide accurate heart rate figures, as do blood pressure cuffs, says Dr. Razavi. If you don’t have a heart rate monitor, follow these steps to check your pulse:

  • Begin by sitting calmly and relaxed. Eliminate as many distractions as possible.
  • Place the tips of your index and middle fingers on the artery located in your wrist or beside your windpipe, and count the number of beats for 15 seconds.
  • Multiply that number by four to estimate your beats per minute.

    Why Is Measuring Your Resting Heart Rate Important

    As a rule of thumb, lower is usually better when it comes to resting heart rate. All things being well, this should point to a strong and healthy heart function that doesnt have to work as hard to maintain a steady beat.

    However, when considered alongside other risk factors, such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, measuring your resting heart rate can provide a window into your current well-being, while also identifying potential health issues.

    Case in point: A Danish study, published in 2013, followed 2,798 men over the course of 16 years, tracking heart health and cardiovascular fitness. The study found that a high resting heart rate was linked with high body weight, higher blood pressure, and lower physical fitness.

    It also discovered that a higher resting heart rate was a significant predictor of mortality. When compared to subjects with an RHR of 50 bpm and under, a persons chances of a premature death doubled with a resting heart rate of 81 to 90 bpm, and tripled if higher than 90 bpm.

    Meanwhile, a low resting heart rate isnt always a sign of peak physical fitness. If its accompanied by dizzy spells, fainting, or fatigue, you should speak with your GP or healthcare provider.

    How Can I Check My Pulse

    You can feel the pulse by pressing lightly on a blood vessel close to the skin’s surface. Always use your index and middle fingers, as your thumb’s pulse might give incorrect readings. The two most common points for checking the pulse are the neck and the wrist.

    To check the pulse at the neck, place your index and middle fingers on your lower neck, on either side of the windpipe. Press lightly until you feel a pulse.

    To check the pulse at your wrist, turn the palm side of your hand facing up. Place your index and middle fingers of your opposite hand on your wrist, approximately one inch below the base of your hand. Press down until you feel the pulse.

    How To Calculate Resting Heart Rate

    How Does Your Heart Rate?

    You can check your heart rate by using a wearable tracker or taking your pulse on your wrist or neck. To measure the number of beats using your wrist, place your pointer and middle fingers against the radial artery on the inside of your wrist. This artery is located just below your thumb. You can also check by placing these two fingers against your neck on the carotid artery, which is located just underneath the jaw and next to your windpipe.

    You should be able to feel a faint pulsating as your blood pumps through your artery. Set a timer on your phone or stopwatch for 30 seconds and count how many times your heart beats in that time frame. Double that number to get your beats per minute.

    Its important to note that measuring your heart rate using your fingers can be inaccurate, especially if you dont have a timer to track the 30 seconds. You may also miss a beat here and there, resulting in an inaccurate resting heart rate number.

    • seems irregular or is ‘jumping around’
    • is racing, even when you’re at rest
    • seems unusually slow some or most of the time.
