What Causes Congestive Heart Failure In Dogs

Congestive Heart Failure Natural Treatment Testimonial

Heart disease, which can develop into heart failure, is commonly seen in older dogs. According to veterinary cardiologist Dr. Bonnie Lefbom, Dipl. ACVIM, incidence of heart disease varies from between 15% to 30% of older, small dogs and 5% to 15% of giant breed dogs.

Congestive heart failure, which can occur as heart disease progresses, is less common thanks to the veterinary treatments available today, but some dogs with heart disease will go on to develop heart failure. Dr. Lefbom says small breed dogs with a long-standing heart murmur are the most common patients with CHF. Large and giant breed dogs more commonly develop a weakened heart muscle.

One of the most common causes of heart failure in dogs is chronic degenerative valve disease . Just like in older people, the heart valves can start to break down and leak, causing backflow in the heart and a heart murmur, says Dr. Lefbom, who practices at the Regional Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, Virginia. Over time, with continued backflow through the valves, the heart enlarges. When the heart gets too big, fluid backs up in the lungs.

Ancient Herbal Therapy Can Preventand Reverseheart Problems In Mice

A natural compound derived from the bark of the magnolia tree can protect the heart from hypertrophy, a thickening of cardiac muscle often caused by chronic high blood pressure that can lead to heart failure, researchers report in the April 14 issue of the online journal Nature Communications.

When injected into mice, honokiol reduced the excess growth of individual cardiac muscle cells, decreased ventricular wall thickness and prevented the accumulation of interstitial fibrosisa stiffening of cardiac muscle cells that reduces their ability to contract. It also protected heart muscle cells from the damage caused by oxidative stress, which can damage DNA.

The researchers, based at the University of Chicago Medicine, also describe how this ancient remedy, widely used in Asia for centuries, protects the heart. They found the compound activates SIRT3, a protective protein associated with delayed aging, stress resistance and metabolic regulation.

Honokiol, by increasing SIRT3 levels, effectively blocked both the induction and progression of cardiac hypertrophy in mice, said Assoc. Prof. Mahesh Gupta, study author. It even mitigated pre-existing cardiac hypertrophy. This has the potential to play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of heart failure.

Although we feel this is extremely promising, said Gupta, director of the Cardiac Cell Biology Research Program, there is still much work to be done.

Conventional Treatment For Congestive Heart Failure

Conventional vets typically treat CHF with prescription medicines. This may be diuretics, which cause the kidneys to excrete extra water to clear out the excess from the lungs or abdomen. The problem is that this puts extra pressure on the kidneys, potentially harming them.

They may also prescribe drugs that make the heart muscle pump more strongly. The problem here is that these drugs sometimes put extra pressure on the valves and can cause more damage. Vets may also prescribe vasodilators to reduce the blood pressure. They open the blood vessels to allow blood to flow more easily.

Iavoid these medicines until theyre a dog needs them for palliative care.

But if your dog already has congestive heart failure, what natural options exist?

What Causes Heart Failure

A healthy heart, will pump out at least half the volume of blood that fills its chambers every time the heart beats.

With heart failure, your heart does one of 2 things:

  • If your heart muscle becomes weak, it fails to pump blood effectively, which causes fluid to build up and pool around your lungs and other parts of your body. This is known as systolic heart failure, or heart failure with reduced ejection fraction.
  • If your heart muscle is too stiff, it cant stretch effectively to relieve pressure in your heart as it pumps this also causes fluid build-up. This is known as diastolic heart failure, or heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

Damage, weakness and stiffness to your heart typically develops after a heart attack or coronary heart disease. Other causes may include:

  • long-term conditions such as diabetes, obesity, hypertension and high cholesterol
  • inflammation of the heart due to an infection
  • other heart problems such as faulty heart valves and irregular heartbeat
  • certain conditions you were born with, such as congenital heart disease or thyroid disorders
  • lifestyle choices, such as excessive alcohol consumption
  • certain medications, such as cancer therapies
  • other diseases such as HIV
  • pregnancy, which may cause your heart to work harder than normal

Your healthcare provider will investigate how your heart failure developed, which may inform how its managed it over time.

Are There Warning Signs For Heart Failure In Dogs And Cats

Dr Sebi – Herbal Remedy For Congestive Heart Failure

A warning sign, or precursor, of heart failure in your dog or cat is an enlarged heart. This is due to the fact that because of some sort of damage to the heart muscle it has to work harder and as a result the heart muscle thickens to compensate for the extra work. However, this is just a stopgap measure and if what is contributing to your animal’s heart disease is not controlled, over time the heart muscle will get weaker and chronic heart failure will result in your dog or cat.

What Are The Causes Of Congestive Heart Failure

CHF can stem from any condition that leads to a change in the hearts pumping power including damage to the heart muscle as a result of a heart attack, or thickening and hardening of the heart muscle as a result of longstanding high blood pressure, diabetes, or improperly functioning heart valves. When it is constantly overworked, the heart becomes larger and thicker than normal as would any muscle that is consistently exercised beyond its normal workload. These changes compromise the hearts efficiency over time. Conditions that can contribute to congestive heart failure include diabetes, an overactive or underactive thyroid, emphysema, a viral or bacterial infection in the heart muscle, morbid obesity, high blood pressure and/or damaged heart valves.

Dont Place Alternative Therapy Above Traditional Medicine

It’s critical for us to educate our patients about potential interactions with heart failure medications, said session moderator Biykem Bozkurt, MD, an advanced heart failure and cardiac transplantation cardiologist and professor of medicine at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Dr. Bozkurt stressed that standard therapies today are having a critical impact on survivorship for people with heart failure, and its a myth that significantly marketed herbal or alternative therapies should ever be used in place of standard therapies, which are proven to improve cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalizations.

Other research presented at the AHA meeting supported this premise. A Cleveland Clinic trial published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology showed that six commonly used dietary supplements marketed for improving heart health did not lower LDL cholesterol when compared with a low-dose cholesterol-lowering medication or placebo. The six supplements studied included fish oil, garlic, cinnamon, turmeric, plant sterols, and red yeast rice.

Diagnostic Testing For Heart Failure In Dogs And Cats

There are a number of different testing methods veterinarians use to diagnose heart failure in dogs and cats that include:

    • Auscultation which is listening to the heart with a stethoscope. This is usually the vet’s first step in diagnosing heart disease. Heart murmurs are detected by auscultation the murmur’s location and intensity helps determine its significance. The heart rhythm is assessed, and if there are concerns, the veterinarian may simultaneously palpate or feel the pulse to determine its strength and rhythm. Finally, the lungs are assessed, looking for evidence of changes associated with heart failure.
    • electrocardiogram measures the electrical activity of the heart and allows accurate determination of both heart rate and rhythm. Any abnormal rhythms can be detected and evaluated.
    • Ultrasound examination utilizes ultrasound waves to evaluate the heart. The size and thickness of each heart chamber can be evaluated, and the effectiveness of the heart’s contractions can be directly observed. Measurements can be taken to evaluate the heart’s pumping efficiency.
    • Chest x-rays are taken to evaluate the size and shape of the heart and look for lung changes such as the presence of fluid
    • Blood and urine tests can give an idea of liver and kidney function that are often impaired in animals with heart disease.

Diet And Congestive Heart Failure In Dogs

In recent years, veterinarians have seen an uptick of canine dilated cardiomyopathy, especially in breeds not previously identified as being at higher risk for this disease.

The majority of those dogs were eating new or unusual diets, Dr. Lefbom says. Initially, it seemed the diet problem was from foods that were grain-free. Now it appears that dog foods high in legumes may be causing this problem. Research is still underway to find the exact cause.

    How Is Heart Failure Diagnosed

Your doctor will typically begin by assessing your symptoms, asking about your family history and performing a physical examination.

There are several tests that help to confirm a diagnosis of heart failure and identify which type it is:

    • echocardiogram : high-frequency sound waves are used to examine the shape and function of your heart
    • electrocardiogram : electrical leads are placed on your chest, arms and legs to record the electrical signals travelling through your heart muscle
    • angiogram : fluid is inserted through a small tube to show whether your coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked
