In general, there is a widespread perception that caffeine may be a root cause of a racing heart, even in light of our overwhelming consumption of caffeinated products, including energy drinks, coffee, and energy supplements.
Caffeine is a natural product that is derived from the raw fruit that grows on coffee plants. Some tea leaves also have caffeine, as does cocoa, kola nuts, and yerba maté. When we consume caffeine, the chemical is absorbed by the body within 30 minutes to an hour.
Is Caffeine Causing My Heart Palpitations
For years researchers believed caffeines stimulant effects on the heart were responsible for heart palpitations. Recent research suggests this isnt necessarily the case. That doesnt mean caffeine isnt causing your heart symptoms, and it doesnt vindicate caffeine completely.

Coffees Impact On Your Overall Heart Health
Recent research, including a study from the University of Southern California, has found an association between coffee drinking and longevity. Studies have also shown less cardiovascular disease among people who drink coffee, making coffee actually heart-healthy.
But what about caffeines role in all this? While many studies find benefits in coffee, many of those benefits occurred whether the coffee was caffeinated or decaffeinated. Its possible that there could be something else in coffee that boosts health. Some Foods May Trigger Heart Palpitations
If you are prone to heart palpitations after eating or drinking, there are some foods that you may want to avoid that can trigger palpitations:
- Coffee: Coffee can be a huge heart palpitation trigger. Anything with an intense concentration of caffeine can have this same effect. Try decaf or
- Chocolate: Due to the high levels of caffeine and sugar, too much chocolate can also cause heart palpitations.
- Energy drinks: Energy drinks have an enormous amount of caffeine. Avoid these in favor of tea to help your heart.
- MSG: Some people react to high levels of MSG. Try to avoid foods with MSG.
- Rich foods: Carbohydrate heavy and fat rich foods can also cause heart palpitations. Eating more moderately can help to lessen the impact.
- Alcohol: Avoid alcohol or cut down. Drinking fewer than 2 glasses of alcohol, no more than 4 times a week can help.
- Other things to avoid: Diet pills, decongestants, and some supplements can also cause heart palpitations, so be cautious when using these.
- Fatigue and stress: Fatigue and stress can be factors as well, so make sure to take the time to exercise, unwind, and rest!

Usually, the more caffeine you consume, the greater the risk of experiencing caffeine withdrawal symptoms when you stop or reduce your intake rate, and the greater the chances of experiencing more severe withdrawal symptoms.
Caffeine is found in many plants, though the most widely consumed are coffee, tea, cocoa pod, cola nut, guarana, and mate. Caffeine is so popular that an estimated 80 90 percent of adults and children in North America consume caffeine habitually. Irregular heartbeats — the occasional hiccup or sporadic rapid drumming — have been associated with potentially fatal heart failure, but caffeine fiends can rest easy knowing their morning cup won’t cause their hearts to malfunction. Still, that’s not very helpful when over-caffeinating makes you feel like your not-actually-fluttering heart is going to explode.

Although the research doesnt currently support a link between caffeine and arrhythmias, if you find caffeine seems to worsen the condition, consider cutting down.
There are patients who may be sensitive to caffeine and note the onset of palpitations or worsening palpitations with low or any caffeine intake, Van Herle says. I usually advise my patients with palpitations that are worsened with caffeine to cut down if they can and reassure others with arrhythmias, that are not affected by caffeine, that they can continue to use it in moderate amounts.
But there might be one exception to the caffeine rule for heart health. In general I do advise my patients to stay away from high energy drinks that contain very high caffeine content, Van Herle adds.
Irregular heartbeat, which can feel like a fluttering or racing heart, is a cause for concern because it may mean your heart isnt working properly. It can be a sign of heart disease, including coronary artery disease or cardiomyopathy . But, according to the American Heart Association, most arrhythmias are actually harmless. You may not be able to prevent heart palpitations at night, but you can lower your risk. You should:

- Get treatment for anxiety or depression. Talk to your provider about antidepressant medication and therapy.

Heart palpitations can certainly be associated with shortness of breath, that is, the two symptoms together without a serious condition being present. That usually indicates that the irregularity of the heart rhythm is significant and may signal the need for a more comprehensive evaluation.
In general, the more serious the symptoms, such as lightheadedness, loss of consciousness, chest pain, shortness of breath, the more seriously one needs to take the problem.
If a patient has known heart disease such as a previous myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure , hypertrophic cardiomyopathy , and others, the symptoms of palpitations will require a thorough evaluation.
Arrhythmias As Symptoms Of Serious Disorders
Arrhythmia can be a symptom of more serious underlying disorders, including:
- cardiovascular disease
- heart valve or heart muscle abnormalities
- congenital heart disease
- an overactive thyroid gland
- problems with the electrical circuitry of the heart, such as blocked signals or signals taking an abnormal path through the heart
- significant electrolyte abnormalities
- irritable heart cells sending extra electrical signals.

How To Overcome Caffeine Heart Palpitations
Having too much caffeine can cause heart palpitations, regardless of the way it is taken .
The most effective way of treating caffeine heart palpitations is cutting the intake of caffeine is larger doses than 300mg.
In overcoming caffeine heart palpitations, some simple techniques can be very helpful:
1. Breathing the 4-7-8 breathing technique is very effective. The method consist in breathing through the nose for 4 seconds, holding breath for 7 seconds and releasing the breath through the mouth for 8 seconds making a whooshing sound. And then repeating the cycle until feeling better.
2. Drinking cold water might be very helpful.
3. Valsalva maneuver It is an attempt to breathe with both mouth and nose closed. This will increase the pressure inside the chest, and will stabilize the heart rate.
4. Coughing it also is useful. The mechanism it relieves caffeine heart palpitations is the same as Valsalva maneuver.
5. Beta blockers If the patient finds heart palpitations intolerable, beta blocker drugs are to be used. They block the beta receptors found in the heart that are triggered by adrenaline. By blocking the receptors, beta blockers can potentially reduce palpitations.
How Do I Manage Heart Palpitations At Night
Most of the time, heart palpitations at night dont require treatment, especially if they only happen occasionally. You may be able to relieve heart palpitations at night yourself. If your heart is racing at night, you should:
- Breathe deeply: Try pursed lip breathing techniques, which involve long, deep breaths. You can also meditate and try other relaxation techniques to reduce stress.
- Drink a glass of water: If youre dehydrated, your heart has to work harder to pump blood.
- Roll over or get up and walk around: A change of position might be all you need to relieve heart palpitations. Try rolling over in bed, sitting up or going for a short walk around the room while taking deep breaths.
If a health condition is causing palpitations, your provider will treat the condition. Treatments vary depending on the cause. Sometimes, providers prescribe a type of medicine called beta blockers to treat palpitations. These medications slow the heart rate and reduce palpitations.

- An increase in alcohol consumption can cause heart palpitations, especially in patients with previous heart problems.
- Some over-the-counter medications that contain decongestants, such as cold and allergy medications, act as stimulants increasing the risk of palpitations.

Can Pregnancy Cause Heart Palpitations
I have had a number of patients in my practice that had their first episode of rapid heart action and palpitation during pregnancy. This is understandable in that the state of pregnancy causes significant shifts in blood volume and also puts a new stress on the heart that may bring out a tendency for rapid heart action that was not manifest prior to pregnancy.
After the pregnancy, the patient may not experience palpitations or may begin to see palpitations occur under other stressful circumstances. There certainly doesn’t need to be anything wrong with the heart in order for palpitations to occur during pregnancy.
One the other hand, women with a history of heart rhythm problems or syncope prior to pregnancy will often have a marked decrease in their symptoms during pregnancy as their cardiac output increases and blood volume increases.
