How to Re-Condition Your Body Through Exercise : How Do I Exercise to Lower Heart Rate?

Lisinopril and losartan are safe and effective for most people. However, they should be avoided in women who are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant as they can be harmful to a growing fetus.

In 2019, certain lots of losartan products were recalled for containing trace amounts of a potentially cancer-causing chemical. This worried many patients, and doctors responded by switching patients to alternative medications.

What Are The Symptoms Of Resistant Hypertension

You can have hypertension without having any symptoms. The best way to know if you have high blood pressure is to have your blood pressure checked by a health care provider.

However, symptoms may be felt when blood pressure first rises or during a hypertensive crisis, when levels are extremely high. These symptoms may include headaches, shortness of breath, chest pain and nosebleeds.

Dizziness is usually not a symptom of high blood pressure. In fact, dizziness can sometimes be a symptom of low blood pressure. Frequent or unexplained dizziness may be a warning sign of a serious condition and should be addressed by your physician.

What Should I Discuss With My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Losartan

You should not use losartan if you are allergic to it.

If you have diabetes, do not use losartan together with any medication that contains aliskiren .

You may also need to avoid taking losartan with aliskiren if you have kidney disease.

Do not use if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away. Losartan can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.

To make sure losartan is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have:

  • kidney disease
  • an electrolyte imbalance
  • if you are on a low-salt diet or
  • if you are dehydrated.

It is not known whether losartan passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. You should not breast-feed while using this medicine.

Losartan is not approved for use by anyone younger than 6 years old.

Antiarrhythmic Properties Of Losartan

AT1 receptors of Ang II are believed to mediate most of the physiologically important actions of Ang II, as the amount of AT2 receptors declines sharply after birth. Blockade of AT1 receptors appears to abolish the multiple actions of Ang II, including the arrhythmogenic action described herein, as well as its trophic, mitogenic, metabolic, thrombotic, and other systemic and local effects.,

Further evidence of losartan’s antiarrhythmic ability was provided by a study of coronary occlusion followed by reperfusion in dogs, which found that treatment with losartan before occlusion reduced the incidence of ventricular tachyarrhythmias, whereas placebo-treated dogs had more episodes and a lower threshold for induction of arrhythmia. A study of global ischemia followed by reperfusion of isolated rat hearts also found that an ACE inhibitor, an Ang II antagonist, and a renin inhibitor were equally effective in diminishing the duration of ventricular fibrillation, although none seemed to affect markers of cellular damage or mechanical function.

Dosage To Reduce Stroke Risk In People With High Blood Pressure And Left Ventricular Hypertrophy

Cardiac electrophysiology and pharmacology

Adult dosage

The typical dosage is 50 mg taken once daily. Your doctor may increase your dosage to 100 mg per day if needed. You may take losartan once or twice per day.

Child dosage

This drug should not be used in children younger than 17 years for this condition.

Senior dosage

There are no specific recommendations for senior dosage. Seniors may process drugs more slowly. As a result, a normal adult dosage may cause levels of this drug to be higher than normal in your body. If youre a senior, you may need a lower dosage, or a different dosing schedule.

What Is The Most Important Information I Should Know About Losartan

Do not use if you are pregnant. If you become pregnant, stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor right away. Losartan can cause injury or death to the unborn baby if you take the medicine during your second or third trimester.

If you have diabetes, do not use losartan together with any medication that contains aliskiren .

Losartan And Antiplatelet Action

Losartan exerts an antiplatelet action by blockade of thromboxane A2 receptors. In the animal model using the stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rat, losartan has been shown to reduce platelet activation and aggregation while causing vasodilation., In this model, this was shown not to be a class effect of ARBs as candesartan and valsartan had no effect on platelet activation. In humans, losartan and irbesartan have demonstrated this effect, while at higher doses, valsartan and telmisartan have inhibited platelet aggregation. Candesartan does not appear to influence platelet aggregation. In the usual therapeutic dosing range, losartan has been shown to be effective. This effect is not seen with ACE inhibitors.

Warnings For People With Certain Health Conditions

Does Having A Lower Heart Rate Make You Fitter?

For people with kidney problems: This medication can make kidney disease worse. Symptoms of worsening kidney disease include:

  • swelling in your hands, feet, or ankles
  • unexplained weight gain

For people with liver problems: If you have liver problems, your body wont break down losartan as effectively as normal. For this reason, your doctor may lower your starting dosage.

For people with diabetes and taking aliskiren: You should not take losartan if you have diabetes and are take a drug called aliskiren to reduce blood pressure. Taking both of these drugs can increase your risk of side effects from losartan. Side effects include low blood pressure, high potassium levels in your blood, and kidney damage. If you have diabetes and are taking aliskiren, talk with your doctor before starting losartan.

Losartan And Heart Failure Outcome Trials

Blockade of the RAS system has been shown to improve survival and hospitalizations in heart failure patients being treated with ACE inhibitors. These benefits of treating with losartan have also been evaluated. The first trial, Evaluation of Losartan in the Elderly compared treatment of NYHA class IIIV heart failure patients treated with captopril and losartan treated for 47 weeks. The primary end point was a worsening renal function. There were no significant changes in renal function. It is important to note that the event rate was lower than anticipated, and therefore, the study may not have been powered to show a significant difference. As a secondary end point, mortality was decreased 46% in the losartan-treated patients. To show superiority of losartan, a second trial ELITE II enrolled 3,152 patients with NYHA class IIIV heart failure and a left ventricular ejection fraction of 40% or less. Patients were treated with either losartan 50 mg a day or captopril 50 mg 3 times a day. There were no statistical differences between the 2 treatment arms regarding the primary end points, including sudden death and the composite of mortality and hospitalizations. Losartan was better tolerated than captopril with fewer patients discontinuing prematurely owing to adverse events .

Whats The Difference Between Blood Pressure And Pulse

Blood pressure and pulse are two measurements that a doctor may use to monitor your heart and overall health. While theyre similar, they can each say very different things about whats happening in your body.

Pulse, also called heart rate, refers to the number of times your heart beats in one minute. Typical pulse measurements range from 60 to 100 beats per minute.

Blood pressure is an estimate of the force your blood is exerting on your blood vessels. A typical value for blood pressure is 120/80. Doctors consider blood pressure to be elevated when its between 130 and 139 systolic over 80 to 89 diastolic .

If you have high blood pressure with a low pulse, it means your blood is putting increased pressure on your blood vessels, but your hearts beating fewer than 60 times per minute. Read on to learn more about what this combination means for your health.

What About Medicine Interactions

If you use 2 or more medicines at the same time, the way your body processes each one can change. When this happens, the risk of side effects from each medicine increases. Each medicine may not work the way it should. Be sure your doctor knows all of the medicines you are taking. These include over-the-counter and prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Also ask your doctor whether you need to avoid any foods or drinks while using your blood pressure medicine. For example, people taking certain CCBs may need to avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice.

For each person theres an ideal combination of medications and dosages that would best control their hypertension. Some people havent yet received that ideal combination. Its important to work with a doctor who is familiar with the range of medications and who knows what works best for each individual.

Losartan Intervention For Endpoint Reduction Trial As A Look At Losartan Benefits

The Losartan Intervention for Endpoint Reduction trial was a double-blind study of 9,193 hypertensive patients between the ages of 55 and 80, who were at high risk. The entry criteria included hypertension and LVH . Participants were randomly assigned to either losartan or atenolol. Doses were increased and hydrochlorothiazide or other medications were added to obtain a target blood pressure of less than 140/90 mmHg. Both medications were started at 50 mg and titrated to 100 mg as needed. The primary end points were occurrence of cardiovascular death, myocardial infarction, or stroke, and the composite end point was any of these events. Losartan was associated with a significantly decreased incidence of the primary composite end point. This was primarily due to a decrease in fatal and nonfatal stroke. Blood pressure control was similar in the 2 groups. This stroke benefit was not seen in African Americans.

Description Of Increased Heart Rate

A fast heartbeat, or a high heart rate , is when the heart beats faster than usual.

  • If a person trains or exercises any physical load, the heart will be reduced more often. This allows the body to pump blood throughout the body so effectively that all cells and tissues are provided with oxygen.
  • If a person experiences fear, anxiety, or emotional stress, the heart rate will also increase.

Such variants of tachycardia are considered physiological or functional and in most cases pass independently, that is, special treatment is not performed.

People who can feel their heartbeat or fluttering heart, often have an increased heart rate. If it is often determined or symptoms of tachycardia do not come for a long time, then you need to inform your doctor about it.

Other causes of rapid heart rate:

  • Infectious lung diseases, such as pneumonia.
  • Infectious diseases of the blood that can cause fever.
  • Anemia .
  • Heart disorders, including irregular heartbeats .

Symptoms of rapid heartbeat

  • There may be no signs of rapid heart rate, or a rapid pulse is felt .
  • Anxiety or an attack of fear.
  • The feeling that the heart is not right in the chest.
  • Pain or mild discomfort in the heart area.
  • The heart “trembles”, and it seems that it is abbreviated incorrectly.
  • With concomitant anemia, there may be a feeling of fatigue, weakness.
  • It may be difficult to perform any routine activities.

Losartan Does More Than Lower Blood Pressure

Am Fam Physician. 2002 Sep 1 66:865-866.

Even with successful reduction of blood pressure, hypertensive patients have significantly increased rates of cardiovascular disease. Left ventricular hypertrophy is believed to be the crucial factor in this continued risk of morbidity and mortality and, in theory, blockage of angiotensin II could reverse LVH. Angiotensin II blocking drugs such as losartan could therefore have direct cardioprotective effects in addition to the effect of lowering blood pressure. Dahlöf and colleagues compared rates of cardiovascular morbidity and death in patients treated with losartan and patients treated with conventional antihypertensive therapy consisting of atenolol and diuretics.

They enrolled more than 9,000 Scandinavian patients 55 to 80 years of age who had hypertension and evidence of LVH on electrocardiography . Exclusions included patients with secondary hypertension, recent myocardial infarction or stroke, angina, heart failure, or contraindications to the study medications. Untreated blood pressures at the beginning of the study were in the range of 160 to 200 mm Hg systolic and 95 to 115 mm Hg diastolic. Patients were randomly assigned to treatment based on losartan or atenolol, and the study was double-masked. Treatment was adjusted to attain blood pressures of less than 140/90 mm Hg, and patients were followed clinically, including ECG monitoring, for at least four years.

Stiffening Of The Arteries

Some physicians consider the most authentic form of pseudo-resistant hypertension to be caused by stiffened brachial arteries that prevent the blood pressure cuff from obtaining a true reading. If your doctor suspects this form of pseudo-resistant hypertension, they might consider other ways to measure your blood pressure.
