Even the most basic heart rate monitor should be able to keep up with your heart rate while you cycle, run, and do other cardio activities. Some fitness trackers and smartwatches can recognize certain types of workouts automatically, while others allow you to set the device to the specific activity youre doing.
Some heart rate monitors are specialized for certain types of activities, such as swimming or triathlons. These models usually include other measurements that enhance the heart rate data, such as cadence, stride length, and other readings that can help you adjust your training.
What Should Your Heart Rate Be
Heart rate norms are based primarily on age rather than gender, although men tend to have slightly lower heart rates than women.
The ideal resting heart rate for adults is 60 to 100 bpm. Very fit individuals such as athletes may have resting heart rates below 60 bpm.
Target heart rates can be used to maximize the efficiency of your workouts, as well as to keep you safe. Typically, exercising at 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate is most beneficial.
To calculate your estimated maximum heart rate, you can use the equation of subtracting your age from 220. For example, if youre 45, then your approximate maximum heart rate is 175 bpm .
You can then use your maximum heart rate to determine what your target heart rate is while exercising.

Are You Not Getting Accurate Hrv On Your Fitbit
To calculate your HRV, Fitbit currently uses its optical sensor, not an ECG, to calculate your HRV.
To get good readings, you need to wear your Fitbit snuggly, so its sensors directly contact your skin. Additionally, wearing the watch a few inches above your wrist bone tends to give better readings.
If you wear your Fitbit loosely, with a bit of room between the watch and skin, you wont get good heart rate and HRV recordings.
Finally, remember that your Fitbit is not a diagnostic tool. Its rather a guide. Rather than focus on a number, look at your baseline and identify trendsdownwards or upwards.

Change Your Fitbits Heart Rate Setting To Auto Or On
If this problem occurred just after updating your Fitbits software or after a reset, its often that your heart rate setting defaulted to off.
So lets make sure your Fitbit is set to monitor your heart rate.
- On your Fitbit device, open the Settings app > Heart Rate > On or Auto
- If that doesnt help, try turning off Heart Rate, syncing your device to the Fitbit app, then turn Heart Rate back on or set it to auto
- Open the Settings app and turn off the heart rate function
- For certain Fitbit models, you can also shut down your Fitbit, wait 30 seconds or so, and then turn it back on
- Turn the heart rate function back on
For Fitbit Alta HR and Fitbit Charge 2, turn on heart-rate tracking in the Fitbit app.
At this time, you only find settings for turning your heart rate on/off/auto in the Fitbit app for these two models You will not find this option in the Fitbit app for any other models.

What Is The Average Rest Heart Rate

Generally, a lower heart rate at rest implies more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness. For example, a well-trained athlete might have a normal resting heart rate closer to 40 beats per minute.
How Does Fitbit Measure Heart Rate
Similar to how we covered the tech for the Apple Watch heart rate monitor, let’s give a quick breakdown to how pretty much all wrist-based heart rate monitoring works.
Photoplethysmography essentially works upon one simple premise: blood is red because it reflects red light and absorbs green light. So by using green LEDs and pairing them with photodiodes, Fitbit uses its own in-house PurePulse technology to detect the amount of blood flowing through the wrist.
When your heart beats, this flow, and as a result the green light being absorbed is greater. These lights are then flashed hundreds of times per second in order to gain the most accurate BPM data.
Naturally, while every company dabbling with this optical sensor technology is working from the same blueprint, the accuracy of the readings will come down to how each company’s algorithms interpret the data.

How To Check Your Hrv On Fitbit
The Health Metrics dashboard includes HRV information with Fitbit Charge 2+, Inspire HR+, Alta HR, Ionic, Versa Series, and Sense devices only.
To gather this data, you must wear your device for at least a full day, including sleeping at night. Fitbit records your HRV during the night only, when sleeping for a minimum of 3 hours.
If the graph shows no recent data, wear your Fitbit when you sleep for several nights, making sure you sleep at least 3 hours or more.
How Easy Are They To Charge
Both the Fitbit Charge 3 and the Charge 4 use a similar clip-on charger that attaches to the back of the watch face and powers up the device. It is simple to attach and is secure so you do not need to worry about it coming detached during the charging time.
You will know that the devices are charging as a battery symbol will show on the face when the charger is initially connected. The battery life on the Fitbit Charge is up to seven days, whereas the battery on the Fitbit Charge 4 is just four days. The reason for the difference is the introduction of GPS on the Charge 4. However, both devices charge quickly, meaning you do not need to be without them on your wrist for long!

Fitbit Charge 3 Accuracy And Full Review
If you have previously read my review of the Fitibit Versa, a smartwatch I have a great fondness for but suffered from syncing issues, youll know Ive had a strained relationship with Fitbit. Although I have to say that the Versa has been much more reliable for me lately, I was still worried how the Fitbit Charge 3 would test out. I am happy to say, after a couple of early updates from Fitbit, the Charge 3 has been performing very well. Woohoo!

The watch is also lightweight and water-resistant up to 164 feet , making it a good option if you train for triathlons.
The battery life lasts about 2.5 days, though it will be less with continuous workout monitoring or always on display enabled.

Best Devices For Measuring Heart Rate
So now you know all the different kinds of heart rate and how to measure them using clocks and math. Even though the traditional methods arent all that hard, there are easier and potentially more accurate ways to measure and track your heart rate.
Of course, the most accurate readings will come from a lab test or other clinical method. But since most people dont have access to and dont need those methods, these devices will work just fine.

Nearly all consumer devices that track heart rate rely on optical sensors that continuously monitor the volume of your blood. In between beats, there is less blood volume at your wrist, and therefore more light that is reflected back to the sensor. But not all devices rely on the same kind of light.
Fitbits, Samsung watches, and several other brands rely on only green lights. These lights are simpler and cheaper to use than the infrared lights that power hospital-grade heart rate trackers but, because green light has a shorter wavelength, it is more readily absorbed by melanin, a natural skin pigment that is more prevalent in people with darker skin.
In short: Skin with more melanin blocks green light, making it harder to get an accurate reading. The darker your skin is, the harder it gets.
We could see that there some differences in accuracy between, for example, different skin types and skin colors, said Mikael Mattsson, a senior researcher at Swedens Karolinska Institutet and an author on one of the only papers to examine the link between heart rate tracker accuracy and race.

Other Heart Rate Technologies
For the previous sections, we mainly focused on PPG technology as a means of optical heart rate monitoring. However, since there is already a wide variety of smartwatches and fitness trackers, a few mentions that their OHRM capability is not through PPG. Fitbit and Jawbone, for example, use rather a different kind of technology.
In the specifications of Fitbit smartwatches, PPG technology is not mentioned. Rather, they said to be using optical heart rate sensors that still maintain extended battery life.
Fitbit has what they call the PurePulse. This technology can automatically and continuously track heart rate from the wrist making it beneficial for monitoring health data and workout intensity throughout the day.
Jawbone UP3 and UP4
These smartwatches boast of their Bioimpedance. This technology measures the resistance of body tissue to tiny electric currents. Such enables the capture of a wide range of physiological signals including ones heart rate.
Meaning, instead of light waves , bioimpedance sends electrical currents to the body tissues. This method is said to require less power compared to PPG and other light-based methods hence allow for an extended battery life of the smartwatch. The downside, however, is that this technology can only measure ones resting and passive heart rate. It does not have yet the capability to track the wearers heart rate during workouts or activities.
