Will Viagra Raise My Heart Rate

Does Viagra Give Women Side Effects

How Can I Increase My Heart Rate Without Running?

Studies on women using Viagra show that they get similar side effects to men taking Viagra, and dont get any extra serious side effects. One instance of female genital bleeding was recorded, similar to the rare side effect of penile bleeding in men.

Even if some research suggests Viagra might be able to help with female sexual disorders, there isnt enough evidence to support treatment. Because of this, and the risk of side effects that comes with Viagra, doctors cant prescribe Viagra to women with sexual disorders.

Since women in the UK cant get approved for Viagra treatment, it means they cant be sure its safe for them to take it. Even if many women would only get mild side effects, if a doctor hasnt made sure its safe, taking Viagra could come with a risk of serious or even life-threatening side effects.

Do Higher Doses Make Viagra Side Effects Worse

Theres a small increase in your chance of getting side effects as the dose of Viagra goes up. Still, theres only a less than 2% chance of side effects across all doses.

This table shows the percentage of men who get certain side effects from Viagra, based on the dose they take. This shows that of the small percentage of men who get side effects, 16% of them will get a headache when taking 25mg of Viagra.

Does Viagra Cause Blood Pressure Problems

Viagra can cause changes in blood pressure for some men, and both high and low blood pressure are listed as uncommon side effects of taking Viagra. Studies show that Viagra does drop blood pressure in men who take it, whether they already have blood pressure problems or not. This drop is considered to be clinically insignificant, which means its not going to cause health problems for most men.

This effect Viagra has on blood pressure is not surprising since it was discovered by accident when scientists were looking for new blood pressure treatments. This change in blood pressure is related to how Viagra works and is part of the reason why Viagra makes it easier to get erections.

Does A Blood Clot Affect Heart Rate

The size of the clot will influence the rate of heart beat. A smaller clot may only display a small change that might not be even considered significant. However, when the blood clot is large, to almost completely block the entire lumen of the blood vessel, the heart will work faster in order to try in eradicating the clot. 9.

Youre Not Getting Enough Sleep

Can Anxiety Cause A Slower Heart Rate

When you sleep, your body isnt doing as much, so your heart can slow down. Sleep is your time to reset. If youre not getting that recovery phase, your adrenaline levels during the day can be higher, Dr. Mills-Frazier says. Excess adrenaline charging through your system during the day can lead to a faster heartbeat. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. If you have trouble clocking those restful minutes, check out what might be getting in the way.

How Does Viagra Affect The Heart

VIAGRA® can cause hypotension, which is more commonly known as low blood pressure. This condition can reduce blood flow to the bodys vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, and liver. While people might think that lowering blood pressure is a good thing, because high blood pressure is unhealthy, when it gets too low, the individual is at an increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

VIAGRA® increases blood flow to the penis to treat erectile dysfunction according to the United States Food & Drug Administration. The increased blood flow comes from the drug widening blood vessels, which allows more blood to follow through those veins and arteries. For this reason, some men arent healthy candidates when considering this medication to treat erectile dysfunction. However, they do have other options. GAINSWave® therapy and the P-Shot® are emerging technologies designed to treat erectile dysfunction at its source, without causing any severe side effects.

Study Clears Some Viagra Fears

Researchers say initial reports of deaths associated with Viagra use soon after the drug was released have caused physicians to hesitate before prescribing the drug to patients with significant heart disease.

However, it is now known that the drug does not increase heart-related deaths, say researcher Linda J. Webster, MScN, of the University of Alberta, and colleagues.

In this study, researchers looked at the effects of treating ED with Viagra in a carefully selected group of 35 men with mild to moderate heart failure who did not use nitates. The men were randomly divided into two groups: one took Viagra for six weeks and then switched to a placebo for six weeks, and the other took a placebo for six weeks and then took Viagra for another six weeks.

The results appear in the March 8 issue of the Archives of Internal Medicine.

The study showed that Viagra caused an average drop in blood pressure of about 6 mm Hg — an insignificant drop that did not lead to symptoms.

Researchers found Viagra improved ED and quality of life among this group, and also appeared to reduce symptoms of depression.

“This study provides new evidence that it is safe and effective to treat men with ED and moderate heart failure with sildenafil,” they write.

Youve Had A Lot Of Caffeine

While most people can handle a certain level of caffeine just fine, overdoing it can make your heart speed up. A bunch of patients come to see me with an elevated heart rate, then they tell me they drink multiple highly caffeinated beverages daily, Dr. Mills-Frazier says. Theyre revving themselves up. This is most likely to happen if youve had too much caffeine, but it could also happen in response to small amounts if youre just sensitive to this stimulant.

According to the Mayo Clinic, its safe for adults to have up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day, or around the amount in four cups of coffee, 10 cans of soda, or two energy drinks . Try cutting back on caffeine gradually to see if it reduces your racing heart. If not, get in touch with your doctor.

How Sildenafil Is Used

What causes an Irregular Heartbeat?

How long before sex should I use sildenafil?

Sildenafil can be used as early as 4 hours before sex and as late as 30 minutes before sex. However, it is recommended to use this drug within an hour before sex.

How often should I take sildenafil?

Sildenafil should not be taken for ED more than once in a 24-hour period. But if you have certain medical conditions or are taking other drugs, your doctor may recommend that you take this drug less often than once a day.

Should I take sildenafil with food?

Sildenafil can be taken with food or without food. It is important to note that certain foods, particularly foods high in fat, can cause the drug to work more slowly than normal.

Heart Disease And Viagra

Viagra and other PDE5 inhibitors prescribed for treating ED drugs are vasodilators, meaning they work by dilating blood vessels to allow for the free flow of blood to the penis, which is essential to a robust erection.

In so doing, Viagra lowers the systolic blood pressure by an average of 8 mmHg. For most people with heart disease, including those taking medication to treat high blood pressure, this isn’t a problem.

However, according to the Food and Drug Administration , there have been reports of myocardial infarction , stroke, irregular heartbeat , and even death in people taking Viagra.

Most, but not all, of these men had heart problems before taking this medicine. The FDA notes that it’s not possible to determine whether these events were directly related to Viagra.

There also are some heart conditions in which a modest drop in systolic blood pressure caused by Viagra may be dangerous:

  • Severe heart failure accompanied by borderline low blood pressure defined as resting hypotension or resting hypertension
  • Significant aortic stenosis accompanied by low blood pressure which may worsen in response to the drug
  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy . People with this condition may develop symptoms if their systolic blood pressure drops.
  • Ischemia

Additionally, people with pulmonary veno-occlusive disease should not take Viagra.

One Final Fact: Viagra Can Prevent Penis Bending And Scarring

Its no secret that Viagra makes your penis harder for penetrative sex. But what you might not know is that it can save your penis from injury if you start taking it early enough.

If youre experiencing erectile dysfunction but wait to talk to your doctor until you cant achieve an erection hard enough for penetrative sex, you may damage your penis. Having sex with an erection thats barely hard enough can bend it and tear tissues that may scar as they heal, Dr. Montague says.

Scar tissue isnt elastic like healthy penile tissue, so it will force your penis to bend with future erections, creating a condition known as Peyronies disease.

This affects 9 percent of men between the ages of 40 and 75. Many of these men have what Dr. Montague calls erectile insufficiency erections that are not as firm as they used to be. During intercourse, bending may damage the penis. Taking Viagra could help prevent the problem and avoid an injury with lifelong consequences, he says.

No matter what your concern is, talk with your doctor. If youre having erectile dysfunction problems, you should feel confident going to your doctor. Its a common issue, Dr. Montague says. Many men are embarrassed, but they shouldnt be. Help is available, and its worth a try.

    Alternative Treatments For Erectile Dysfunction

Before Viagra hit the market in 1998, there was no proven treatment for erectile dysfunction that men could take in pill form. Doctors were interested in yohimbe, an herb that increases heart rate and blood pressure. Some doctors prescribed it to their patients in combination with other treatments for erectile dysfunction. Even then it was not a recommended treatment and is still not today. Studies have not proven that it works.

Men with high blood pressure especially shouldn’t take either the prescription form or the herb. It can dangerously raise blood pressure.

Currently, no herb or supplements have been proven to help with erectile dysfunction. Herbs and supplements that some believe are helpful for erection problems include:

    • Ginseng

Does Fake/herbal Viagra Cause Side Effects

Increased heart rate in the heat

Theres a wide range of different products marketed as a herbal alternative to Viagra, so its hard to say exactly what side effects they might cause.

Many of these kinds of products arent properly regulated, and its hard to be certain of what ingredients are in them or how they are made. This means that they could have ingredients that cause side effects, possibly even serious ones. Some of these products may also contain unsafe amounts of actual medication, or combinations of medications, which could put you at risk of serious side effects.

Rather than put your health and your wallet at risk with potentially ineffective and unsafe products, its better to get authentic treatment, either online or from your GP or pharmacist.

How Viagra Can Affect The Heart

An article from the American Association of Retired Persons shows that Viagra can affect the heart .

The Journal of Family & Community Medicine notes that men who are taking nitrate-based medicine shouldnt take VIAGRA®.

Their study adds that men with the following conditions also shouldnt take this drug:

    • Hypotension. Abnormally low blood pressure, which is a reading below 90/60 mm Hg. Hypotension can cause a person to feel dizzy or faint. If the blood pressure drops suddenly or becomes extremely low, the situation can become life-threatening.
    • Angina pectoris. With this condition, the patient feels severe chest pain. The discomfort can spread to the neck, shoulders, and arms. The pain is the result of insufficient blood flow to the heart.
    • Postural hypotension. Also called orthostatic hypotension, this condition describes when a persons blood pressure falls significantly because they stood up or sat down.
    • Congestive heart failure. This condition exists when the heart cant circulate enough blood to the body. Sometimes, the heart lacks sufficient force to push blood throughout the veins.

Men without these conditions may be given the green light to take VIAGRA® to enhance their sexual performance. However, its not uncommon for these patients to take this medication, yet still have issues relating to erectile dysfunction.

The kidneys, liver, or heart of older adults may not work as well as they used to. This can cause your body to process drugs more slowly. As a result, a higher amount of a drug stays in your body for a longer time. This raises your risk of side effects.

Your doctor may start you on a lowered dosage of sildenafil. This can help prevent levels of this drug from building up in your body.

Heart Palpitations Are A Rare Side Effect Of Viagra

    • May 3, 2019

Dear Dr. Roach I am a healthy male, age 66, nonsmoker, not overweight, who takes no medications. At my most recent annual physical, I mentioned to my physician that I was having symptoms of erectile dysfunction and wondered if that was typical for a man my age or if it could be due to low testosterone. He ordered blood tests as well as a testosterone test. All my numbers were in the normal range. My blood pressure runs a little high, but he said that as long as I kept it under 140/90 he wouldnt put me on blood pressure medication.

He prescribed sildenafil , and I have taken it three times. The first dose was 60 mg. The subsequent doses have been 20 mg , which works as expected, except for one thing: About 30 minutes after taking it, my heart starts beating hard and fast. This happens off and on for several hours as the medication works through my system. This is mentioned as a rare side effect . Should I be concerned about this? It is a little scary to feel my heart beating so hard while relaxing in front of the TV, but it does eventually go away. Also, I am a little concerned about talking to my doctor about it because we dont really know each other very well yet. Any thoughts? M.

Answer My most important advice is that you should certainly discuss this with your doctor. Its important, and you will get to know your new doctor more quickly by discussing something important like this.
