Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders suffered from a heart attack this week before being released from a Las Vegas hospital Friday, The New York Times reports. The 78-year-old entered the hospital on Tuesday evening after experiencing chest pain at a campaign event, which caused him to cancel campaign events this week. The campaign previously announced that Sanders had two stents inserted, but his Las Vegas doctors announced Friday that he was given a diagnosis of a myocardial infarctionalso known as a heart attack.
The candidate was seen leaving the hospital Friday, waving and pumping a fist. After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work, he said in a statement. Sanders’ campaign said the senator would be returning home to Vermont by the end of the week, and confirmed that he would be participating in the next Democratic debate on Oct. 15.

Presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., had emergency heart surgery after experiencing chest pain on the campaign trail Tuesday, his campaign said Wednesday.
Sanders, who is 78, had two heart stents put in after doctors discovered a blockage in his artery.
Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits, senior campaign advisor Jeff Weaver said in a statement. He will be resting up over the next few days. We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.
Heart stents hold the artery open and allow blood to flow through a previously blocked area. While an artery blockage might seem like code for a heart attack, that’s not necessarily the case, health experts say.
While a full blockage can sometimes lead to a heart attack, in less severe cases, a blockage can manifest as chest pain or shortness of breath. Instead, an artery blockage is generally another term for coronary heart disease, which usually develops over decades, according to the Mayo Clinic. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, according to the American Heart Association.
“The prognosis with prompt re-vascularization is excellent, as long as there is no long-term damage to the heart,” Haythe explained. “We would expect him to be fine.”
Polls And News Coverage
Some supporters raised concerns that publications such as The New York Times minimized coverage of the Sanders campaign in favor of other candidates, especially Trump and Clinton. The Times‘ombudsman reviewed her paper’s coverage of the Sanders campaign and found that as of September 2015 the Times “hasn’t always taken it very seriously. The tone of some stories is regrettably dismissive, even mocking at times. Some of that is focused on the candidate’s age, appearance and style, rather than what he has to say.” She also found that the Times’s coverage of Sanders’s campaign was much scanter than its coverage of Trump’s, though Trump’s was also initially considered a long shot at that time, with 63 articles covering the Trump campaign and 14 covering Sanders’s. A December 2015 report found that the three major networksCBS, NBC, and ABChad spent 234 minutes reporting on Trump and 10 minutes on Sanders, despite their similar polling results. The report noted that ABC World News Tonight had spent 81 minutes on Trump and less than one minute on Sanders during 2015.

Senator Bernie Sanders had a heart attack this week, his presidential campaign said on Friday as he left a Las Vegas hospital, following three days of near silence from the candidate and his advisers about his health.
Mr. Sanders, 78, had entered the hospital on Tuesday night after experiencing chest pain at a campaign event, and doctors had inserted two stents in a blocked artery, a relatively common procedure. But the campaign did not confirm that Mr. Sanders had had a heart attack until Friday, inviting questions about his condition, and his campaigns transparency, as he remained off the campaign trail this week.
Television cameras filmed Mr. Sanders as he left the hospital Friday, waving to onlookers and pumping a fist, then driving off in a sport utility vehicle. He will remain in Las Vegas on Friday night and return to his home in Burlington, Vt., on Saturday, campaign officials said.
After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work, Mr. Sanders said in a statement.
At that point, Mr. Sanders was taken to an urgent care facility, where doctors determined that he should be transferred to a hospital. He was then taken by ambulance to Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center.

Sen. Bernie Sanders has reportedly suspended his presidential campaign activities after undergoing an emergency heart procedure.
The sudden medical procedure begs the question: How serious is this heart condition, and how might it affect Sanders’ future health?
Yesterday evening , the Vermont senator experienced some chest discomfort during a campaign event, Jeff Weaver, Sanders’ senior adviser, said in a statement released today , according to The Washington Examiner.
“Following medical evaluation and testing, he was found to have a blockage in one artery, and two stents were successfully inserted,” Weaver said. “Senator Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days.”
Stents are a type of treatment for coronary artery disease, the most common type of heart disease in which the coronary arteries become narrowed or blocked, usually from the buildup of cholesterol and fat deposits called plaques.

Sanders campaign wouldnt say whether the candidate had suffered a heart attack before the blockage was opened. But a doctor not involved in the care said, if not, Sanders could expect to be back to a normal busy schedule in about a week.
This will give him more energy, said Dr. Ron Waksman, an interventional cardiologist at MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute in Washington.

As Sanders described his upbringing as an American Jew in a 2016 speech: his father generally attended synagogue only on Yom Kippur he attended public schools while his mother “chafed” at his yeshiva Sunday schooling at a Hebrew school and their religious observances were mostly limited to Passoverseders with their neighbors. As mayor of Burlington, Sanders allowed a Chabadpublic menorah to be placed at city hall, an action the ACLU contested. He publicly inaugurated the Hanukkahmenorah and performed the Jewish religious ritual of blessing Hanukkah candles. His early and strong support played a significant role in the now widespread public menorah celebrations around the globe. When asked about his Jewish heritage, Sanders has said that he is “proud to be Jewish.”
In 2016, he disclosed that he had “very strong religious and spiritual feelings,” adding, “My spirituality is that we are all in this together and that when children go hungry, when veterans sleep out on the street, it impacts me.”

After graduating from college, Sanders returned to New York City, where he worked various jobs, including Head Start teacher, psychiatric aide, and carpenter. In 1968, he moved to Stannard, Vermont, a town small in both area and population within Vermont’s rural Northeast Kingdom region, because he had been “captivated by rural life.” While there, he worked as a carpenter, filmmaker, and writer who created and sold “radical film strips” and other educational materials to schools. He also wrote several articles for the alternative publication The Vermont Freeman. He lived in the area for several years before moving to the more populous Chittenden County in the mid-1970s. During his 2018 reelection campaign, he returned to the town to hold an event with voters and other candidates.

SATURDAY, Oct. 5, 2019 — Senator Bernie Sanders left a Las Vegas hospital on Friday after being admitted with chest pains on Tuesday his presidential campaign is now saying the 78-year-old suffered a heart attack.
Sanders experienced chest pain at a campaign event and received two stents to open a blocked artery. He has cancelled public events for the time being, The New York Times reported.
Sanders waved to onlookers and gave a fist pump as he left Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center and was taken away in a waiting vehicle. Later, after dropping off bags at his hotel, he was seen taking a walk in a nearby park with his wife, Jane.
“After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work,” Sanders said in a statement.
His doctors in Las Vegas, Arturo Marchand and Arjun Gururaj, said the senator’s “hospital course was uneventful with good expected progress,” the Times added.
Although his campaign is not saying when he will resume a normal schedule, on Thursday it was announced that Sanders does plan to take part in the next Democratic debate, scheduled for Oct. 15 near Columbus, Ohio.
Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist and chief academic officer at Cleveland Clinic’s Heart & Vascular Institute, said that stenting should allow Sanders to resume normal activities.
“If not recognized and treated early, the outcome would have been more ominous,” Bhusri added.

Bernie Sanders suffered a heart attack this week, his presidential campaign disclosed Friday as the Vermont senator was discharged from a Las Vegas hospital.
The disclosure, which came 2½ days after Sanders was first hospitalized, is likely to bring further scrutiny of the 78-year-olds health as he seeks to resume campaigning to become the nations oldest president.
Sanders, 78, waved as he walked out the hospital Friday afternoon. Sanders had been treated after experiencing chest pain at a Tuesday campaign event doctors placed two stents into his heart to correct a blocked coronary artery, according to his campaign.
The candidate plans to participate in the Oct. 15 Democratic debate in Ohio, but its not clear how soon he will return to the campaign trail after canceling upcoming events.
I want to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Desert Springs Hospital Medical Center for the excellent care that they provided, Sanders said in a statement. After two and a half days in the hospital, I feel great, and after taking a short time off, I look forward to getting back to work.
After presenting to an outside facility with chest pain, Sen. Sanders was diagnosed with a myocardial infarction, said the statement, attributed to Dr. Arturo E. Marchand Jr. and Dr. Arjun Gururaj.

Endorsement Of Hillary Clinton
After the final primary election, Clinton became the presumptive Democratic nominee. On July 12, Sanders formally endorsed Clinton. He said he would continue to work with the Democratic National Convention organizers to implement progressive positions. Sanders refused to formally concede before the convention. He spoke at the 2016 Democratic National Convention on July 25, during which he gave Clinton his full support. Some of his supporters attempted to protest Clinton’s nomination and booed when Sanders called for party unity. He responded, “Our job is to do two things: to defeat Donald Trump and to elect Hillary Clinton It is easy to boo, but it is harder to look your kids in the face if we are living under a Trump presidency.”
