If you have severe coronary artery disease, you are more likely to need coronary angioplasty or some type of CABG surgery. It is possible that your type of blockages will not respond as well to treatment with angioplasty. In this case, you may need CABG surgery. Certain types of blockages may respond better to CABG than to angioplasty. For certain people one procedure or the other is clearly the best choice. Choice Of Source Of Grafts
The choice of vessel is highly dependent upon the particular surgeon and institution. Sex. In most cases, you should be physically good to go in about 3 weeks. But you may lose interest in sex for a while after your surgery, so it could be as long as 3 months before youre ready to be intimate again.
Second Day After Surgery
On the second day after your heart bypass surgery, you may:
- Walk two or three times with physical therapist and nursing staff.
- Begin to eat solid foods and resume normal eating patterns.

He wasnt short of breath. His chest didnt feel tight. But on the morning of Aug. 4, 2004, the 47-year-old from Wilmington, Del., didnt feel normal. His jaw was burning, his shoulder was in pain. But he didnt want to wake up his family. The port operations manager wasnt in the habit of going to the doctor or asking for help about his health.
Finally, concerned about the ongoing sensation in his jaw, Vignuli woke his wife. Soon, he was in an emergency room, where a doctor told him he had just had a heart attack and needed quadruple bypass surgery immediately.
Hours later, he awoke in the cardiac intensive care unit at Christiana Hospital in Newark, Del. Since then, Vignuli has lived a successful and active life once thought impossible for people with clogged arteries, which can lead to stroke, infections and heart attacks.
He has done so thanks to a procedure once considered risky: More than 9 percent of the first 150 patients to receive the procedure at one hospital in 1966 and 1967 died before they were able to be sent home. That figure went down to 3 percent in 1999 for a large comparable group of American and Canadian patients. Today, 14 years after Vignulis surgery, deaths before being discharged from the hospital are between 1 and 3 percent, and surgeons have refined the procedure and the rehab that follows even more.
It would take 50 more years for the surgery to succeed in a human.

When you are ready to go home, you will be given a list of medications and instructions to help you recover from your operation. How Long Does Heart Bypass Surgery Recovery Usually Take
After CABG, most people stay in the hospital for 5 to 7 days. While youre there, you can expect the following:

You will probably be on a ventilator, or breathing machine. In most cases, the ventilator can be removed after a few hours.

You will also have little patches with wires attached to your chest that allow your medical team to monitor your heart rate and rhythm.

You will have tubes coming out of your chest, which drain fluid and help your lungs recover.

You will have several other smaller tubes that go into your blood vessels. Medications are given through intravenous catheters. Others are used to monitor your blood pressure and heart function.

The surgeon has to cut through the breastbone, or sternum, to get to your heart. So, you will have a bandage or dressing down the center of your chest to keep that area clean and protected.
Over the next few days, as you recover, those tubes will gradually be removed. And even while you have those tubes in place, your care team, including nurses and therapists, will get you out of bed as soon as it is safe. Moving around helps your breathing, blood flow, and strength. Although this sounds uncomfortable, medication will help to ease the process.
When you leave the hospital, you will likely go home. But if you are very weak or need extra help, you may go to a rehabilitation hospital for a few weeks. There you can rebuild your strength and make sure youre ready to resume daily activities.

What Happens After Heart Bypass Surgery
Youâll wake up in an intensive care unit . The breathing tube will still be in your mouth. You wonât be able to talk, and you’ll feel uncomfortable. Nurses will be there to help you. Theyâll remove the tube after a few hours, when you can breathe on your own.
During the procedure, the medical team will probably have put a thin tube called a catheter into your bladder to collect urine. When youâre able to get up and use the bathroom on your own, theyâll remove it.
They also attached an IV line before the surgery to give you fluids and medications. Youâll get it removed once youâre able to eat and drink on your own and no longer need IV medications.
Fluids will build up around your heart after the procedure, so your doctor will put tubes into your chest. Theyâll be there for 1 to 3 days after surgery to allow the fluid to drain.
You may feel soreness in your chest. Youâll have the most discomfort in the first 2 to 3 days after the procedure. You will probably get pain medicines for that.
Youâll also be hooked up to machines that monitor your vital signs — like your heart rate and blood pressure — around the clock.
You should be able to start walking 1 to 2 days after surgery. Youâll stay in the ICU for a few days before you’re moved to a hospital room. Youâll stay there for 3 to 5 days before you go home.

Why Is This Important
The research team says one of their aims in this project was to empower patients. Parents said it helped to know they were not alone in facing complications, that clinical teams had seen the complications before and knew how to deal with them.
Over the course of the project, the researchers kept in close contact with the organisation that monitors the outcomes of childrens heart surgery, called the National Congenital Heart Diseases Audit , and with those responsible for designing specialist health services. After You Leave The Hospital:

The terms single bypass, double bypass, triple bypass, quadruple bypass and quintuple bypass refer to the number of coronary arteries bypassed in the procedure. In other words, a double bypass means two coronary arteries are bypassed coronary artery and right coronary artery ) a triple bypass means three vessels are bypassed ) a quadruple bypass means four vessels are bypassed while quintuple means five. Left main coronary artery obstruction requires two bypasses, one to the LAD and one to the LCX.
A coronary artery may be unsuitable for bypass grafting if it is small , heavily calcified, or located within the heart muscle rather than on the surface. A single obstruction of the left main coronary artery is associated with a higher risk for a cardiac death and usually receives a double bypass.
The surgeon reviews the coronary angiogram prior to surgery and identifies the number of obstructions, the percent obstruction of each, and the suitability of the arteries beyond the obstruction as targets. The presumed number of bypass grafts needed as well as the location for graft attachment is determined in a preliminary fashion prior to surgery, but the final decision as to number and location is made during surgery by direct examination of the heart.

Your body needs quite a bit of time to heal after a major surgery like CABG. Its important to follow your care teams instructions and ask them when you have questions. They will likely advise you to avoid certain activities while you recover, some of which may include the following:

It takes time for the sternum to heal. So for at least a couple of weeks after surgery, most people should avoid lifting, pushing, or pulling more than 10 pounds.

You should also limit use of your arms to simple everyday tasks like getting dressed and playing cards. In other words, dont lift your arms above your head or behind your back.

Dont drive for the first 2 to 3 weeks. This helps avoid injuring your chest, but its also because you may still be on pain meds and not feeling 100% yet.
