Tips To Increase Accuracy Of Heart Rate Monitor On Apple Watch

The built-in heart rate monitor feature of Apple Watch is great for exercise and monitoring general heart health, but from time to time you may notice the heart rate number reported back seems unusual given your present state. For example, you may be sitting at your desk working and see some number way out of line with your regular heart rate, or perhaps youre exercising and you see a number much below what youd expect. These outlier readings happen somewhat frequently on Apple Watch, but theres usually a reason that is easy to address.

What Is A Normal Heart Rate

A normal heart rate for adults is typically 60 to 100 beats per minute. A heart rate that is slower than 60 beats per minute is considered bradycardia and a rate that is faster than 100 beats per minutes is termed tachycardia . There are some experts who believe that an ideal resting heart rate is closer to 50 to 70 beats per minute. Regardless of what is considered normal, it’s important to recognize that a healthy heart rate will vary depending on the situation.

Among healthy people, a slower heart rate can be due to being physically fit, a medication, or sleep patterns. However, a slower heart rate can indicate a sign of disease including heart disease, certain infections, high levels of potassium in the blood, or an underactive thyroid.

On the reverse side, a fast rate in healthy people can be because they are exercising, nervous or excited, using a stimulant or are pregnant. The health conditions that are associated with a fast heart rate include most infections or just about any cause of fever, heart problems, certain medications, low levels of potassium in the blood, an overactive thyroid gland or too much thyroid medication, anemia, or asthma or other breathing trouble.

How To Use Your Iphone As A Heart Rate Monitor

10 hidden Activity app features that will take your ...

As weve already mentioned, you dont need any additional hardware or devices to check your heart rate all you need is your iPhone. An ANT heart rate monitor is quite useful, as well, but not necessary for such a simple task as counting the heartbeats.

Keep in mind, although this is a relatively accurate method of monitoring your heart rate, you should by no means use this method as an excuse not to visit a doctors office. After all, this is only a feature that is available on the iPhone and is not a substitute for a check-up at a doctors office.

Now, lets get to the question at hand how to use your iPhone as a heart rate monitor? It is quite simple, actually. All you need is an iPhone, a working camera and flash, and an app that is designed to perform this task.

After youve downloaded what you feel is the best HRM for iPhone, launch the app and follow the instructions. In most cases, the set of instructions will be very clear and straightforward. All youll have to do is place one of your fingers, preferably the index finger, over the camera and start the heart rate monitor. After a few seconds, the app will show you the BPM, and you will have successfully tracked your heart rate.

Checking your heart rate history captured by Apple Watch on iPhone gives you the most data.

  • Open the Health app on your iPhone
  • Tap the Browse tab in the bottom right corner, then Heart
  • On the main page, youll see the various heart rate categories. Tap one to see your history
  • At the top, you can change the data window between hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly
  • Toward the bottom, youll see heart rate highlights and more information about each type of heart rate data
  • Further down in the main Heart section, youll see more data like Cardio Fitness, ECG results, blood pressure readings, and low/high/irregular heart rate notifications.

Heres how all this looks on iPhone:

In each of the different heart rate categories, toggle between the H, D, W, M, Y options to see your heart rate data over time.

Its interesting to be able to connect the dots looking backward and use that moving forward to help with managing stress, being more mindful, etc.

For example, in my data below there was a spike in my resting heart rate in March when I was moving, and another during the holidays in December .

When Apple Watch Measures Your Heart Rate

When you use the Workout app, Apple Watch measures your heart rate continuously during the workout and for 3 minutes after the workout ends to determine a workout recovery rate. If you don’t see your heart rate, check your settings.

This information, as well as other data it collects, helps Apple Watch estimate how many calories youve burned. In addition, Apple Watch measures your heart rate throughout the day when youre still, and periodically when youre walking . Since Apple Watch takes these background readings based on your activity, the time between these measurements will vary. Apple Watch also calculates a daily resting rate and walking average by correlating background heart rate readings with accelerometer data when sufficient background readings are available. You can control which third-party apps have access to your health data from the Health app in Sources.

Some anomalies may appear in the displayed data, resulting in occasional heart rate measurements that are abnormally high or low.

Tell Siri To Give You Exercise Reminders

The hardest part of getting fit is making yourself get out an exercise. Siri can help. This is the iPhone 8’s digital assistant. Just say “hey Siri” to wake her up, then ask her to set a reminder to get you out pounding the pavement, or down to the gym.

With the latest iOS 11 software, Siri is incredibly smart. You can talk to her just like a person. Maybe keep those long and meaningful conversations for your friends, though.

How to measure heart rate (pulse) on your iPhone

These days, it’s pretty easy to keep track of your health & fitness with an inexpensive tracker, Apple Watch, or Fitbit.

But what if you want to rely solely on your iPhone and its apps? While it might require a bit more manual labor than most fitness trackers, if you have a newer iPhone you can use its camera to simulate the same sort of heart rate readings you might get with an Apple Watch or chest strap.

Note: These apps have you cover your iPhone’s camera with a finger to take a heart rate reading. Depending on your circulation and other factors, this kind of reading likely won’t be as accurate as one from a chest strap or EKG. As such, most of these apps come with the warning that they should only be used for casual use if you have a medical condition that requires regular heart monitoring, you should speak with your doctor.

Receive High Or Low Heart Rate Notifications

Your Apple Watch can notify you if your heart rate remains above a chosen threshold or below a chosen threshold after youve been inactive for at least 10 minutes. You can turn on heart rate notifications when you first open the Heart Rate app, or at any time later.

  • Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch, then tap Heart.

  • Tap High Heart Rate Notifications or Low Rate Notifications, then set a heart rate threshold.

  • You can also open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, then tap Heart. Tap High Heart Rate or Low Heart Rate, then set a threshold.

Auto Log Your Gym Sessions With A Watch 3

One of the neatest features of the Apple Watch 3 is one you probably won’t see when you take a look at the iPhone 8 and its accessories down at the local Apple Store. It’s called GymKit and is perfect for, you guessed it, the gym.

Using this new feature you can just swipe your Watch 3 against gym equipment to log your treadmill or elliptical sessions. The data will then be sync’d to your iPhone 8.

The only downside is that the gym equipment will have to support GymKit too. Life Fitness, Cybex, TechnoGym, Matrix, Star Trac, StairMaster and Schwinn have confirmed plans to get on-board. If you pay £50 or more a month for your membership, maybe it’s time to suggest they get some smarter machines in.

    Instant Heart Rate By Azumio

How to See Heart Rate Recovery on Apple Watch and iPhone

Instant Heart Rate by Azumio comes in two versions Instant Heart Rate and Instant Heart Rate+ which costs $4.99 in the App Store. Either of these versions can be upgraded to the Premium version via In-App Purchase in order to unlock the full power of Instant Heart Rate. The Premium upgrade is $9.99 for a monthly subscription, or $59.99 for an annual subscription .

I use Instant Heart Rate+ which I purchased for $4.99 without any subscription. This was one of the first apps available to measure your heart rate using the camera. When I started to use this app, there was no Apple Watch, and Bluetooth Heart Rate monitors were not yet supported on the iPhone. This was a simple way to be able to occasionally check my heart rate on the iPhone.

The Instant Heart Rate app can measure heart rate and then save these measurements in the Health app. This can be specified the first time you run the app, or at a later time by running the Health app, and looking for the Instant Heart Rate app in the Sources tab of the Health app. I now have an Apple Watch and a Polar H7 Bluetooth Heart Rate Monitor, but I still occasionally use the Instant Heart Rate app.

How Can An Hrm App Benefit You

As weve already mentioned, iPhone HRM apps arent substitutes for medical-grade equipment or regular check-ups. However, they are not a gimmick. They can be quite beneficial if used the right way.

For starters, using an HRM app from time to time can give you a solid insight into your heart health, meaning, if you happen to notice that the app is constantly showing a high BPM, even if youre just relaxing that could indicate that somethings off and that you should visit a doctor. We wont go as far as to say these could save your life, but they can be quite helpful.

Also, monitoring your heart rate can help you engage in a much more efficient workout session. By calculating your optimal maximum heart rate, you can determine just how much of a heavy load is your heart under. From there, you can aim for so-called heart rate zones to make the most out of your workout session.

Finally, the good thing about these is that you dont have the need for another device or a gadget. Smartwatches can be expensive, and if you only use them to keep track of your heart rate or count your steps its not worth it. With an HRM app for an iPhone, you can do all that without spending any extra money. Lord knows youve already spent way too much on the iPhone in the first place.

Heart Rate Monitor App On Android

There are plenty of apps on the Play Store which would get you good enough results and I would go out on a limb to say that most of the apps are just fine, not special. The only key difference is the additional features and a slight change in the calculation of the pulse.

Accurate Heart Rate Monitor is a minimal app that lets you measure pulse using the camera and the smartphone flash. The app can support Google Fit and sends your stats to the app for in-depth analysis. The app is not as fast as the fitness trackers but it does give consistent results. You can, however, change the measurement time in the settings but that might yield inconsistent results.

To measure your heart rate using the app, install and grant Camera access so that it can turn on the Flashlight and record the image. The app keeps the Camera ON in the app and automatically start measuring as soon as you put your finger on the camera Sensor. Just make sure to put your finger directly above the camera sensor and the flash for accurate results.

There may be limitations on iOS devices but the apps are as good as Android apps if not more. Apple has its own smartwatch with a heart rate monitor. While you can always buy an Apple Watch but if you have an iPhone with flash that works then the app will be fine.

Instant Heart Rate: HR monitor It works just like an Android app and counts the pulse by shining a light through your finger. You are required to create an account before you can take a measurement where you can create an account or log in with your existing social media accounts.
