Which Garmin Watches Measure Heart Rate Variability

There are a handful of newer Garmin watches that do provide raw HRV data. The most recent crop of Garmin smartwatches does provide access to raw HRV data. This includes the Epix series, Fenix 7 series, Forerunner 945 LTE, Venu 2 and Venu 2 Plus. If you have one of these, youre in luck.

Resting Heart Rate And Maximum Heart Rate

RHR and HRmax are essentially the lower and upper limits of your HR. They are both important for various reasons. However, despite some similarities, each needs to be considered separately.

Your RHR changes from day to day. The RHR of normal adults can vary anywhere between 60 and 100 bpm, and some athletes can see an even lower range than that. Typically, a lower RHR reflects good cardiorespiratory fitness levels , adequate sleep, low stress and abstention from stimulants such as alcohol and tobacco.

Garmin wearables typically measure RHR while you are asleep, usually not long before you wake up. Consider sleeping with your watch for the most accurate measurements of your RHR.

Your HRmax is the fastest your heart can beat. Unlike RHR, your HRmax doesnt change from one day to the next. It is also almost entirely unaffected by your fitness level, so getting into great shape wont increase your HRmax.

Everyones physiology is unique, and that includes your heart. Some naturally beat a bit faster than others, and some are a bit slower. As a rule, however, your HRmax will decline as you get older. This insight is widely used to estimate an individuals HRmax with help from the following formula: 220 age = HRmax bpm3. If you know your own true HRmax, you can enter it on your watch or in the Garmin Connect app.

How Do I Measure Hrv Without A Heart Rate Chest Strap

But what if you have one of the older watches? You dont have the option to do a Health Snapshot. And doing the above mentioned HRV Stress Test will not get you raw HRV data. Instead, you get a score. Plus you need a heart rate chest strap to do the test.

Unless Garmin updates its older watches to be able to do a Health Snapshot you are out of native options. But you can resort to a third-party option an app called HR Variability.

  • First youll need to download the app and install it to your watch. This is done via the smartphone app.
  • Open Garmin Connect, click on the picture of your wearable along the top. This will take you through to the Settings page.
  • Tap on Activities & App Management. Choose Activities & Apps.
  • Do a search for an app called HR Variability. Install it and make sure to sync Garmin Connect to your watch.
  • The app is compatible with most Forerunner watches, the Fenix range and Vivoactives.

    Once installed you can go to your watch and make it one of your favorites. That way it wont require too many button presses to launch.

    To start a HRV measurement simply start the activity as you would any other activity such as a run or a swim. The app will ask you to specify whether the measurement is After Waking Up, Before Bed, After Exercising, Before Exercising or Else. Youll then have the option to choose between a 3 minute or 5 minute test. The app will remind you to remain still during the measurement.

    Starting From Maximum Heart Rate

    Your maximum heart rate is relatively stable and declines slowly as you get older. This is different from your resting heart rate, which reflects changes in fitness, recovery status and dietary choices.

    If you already know your maximum heart rate, simply enter your maximum heart rate in the user profile settings of your device or in the Garmin Connect app. If you dont know your maximum heart rate, it will be automatically estimated by using the common formula of 220 minus your current age.

    This formula for estimating maximum heart rate is utilized in guidelines from the American Society of Sports Medicine, which notes that while more complicated formulas exist, alternatives have not proven to be universally more reliable in practical usage4. According to this method, a 42-year-old person would have an estimated maximum heart rate of 178 bpm . Your maximum heart rate is likely within +/-12 bpm of this estimated value.

    Estimating your maximum heart rate is a good place to start. However, knowing your own maximum heart rate and using it to personalize your heart rate zones unlocks the full potential of this training tool.

    A variety of test protocols exist to determine your own personal maximum heart rate. You may also encounter your personal maximum heart rate during especially vigorous workouts that include sustained maximum-intensity efforts or during 5K/10K race events.

    Garmin has announced new software and feature updates for select smartwatches including the fnix 7 series, epix , Instinct 2 series and the Edge 1040 series of cycling computers.

    Watches With Hrv Recording

    There are a number of watches that will record HRV, or more accurately, will record the beat-to-beat time for later HRV analysis.

    • Recent Garmin Watches. require you to download enable_hrv_settings_file.fit that you copy onto the watch. You must connect the watch to a computer and copy the file to the folder “GARMIN\NEWFILES”, which on Windows may require you to show hidden folders. Simply disconnect and the watch will restart, processing the FIT file. You can disable HRV with this file disable_hrv_settings_file.fit. The watches include Garmin Epix, Garmin 920XT, Garmin 620, Garmin 235, Garmin Fenix 3, Garmin 920XT.
    • Garmin 910XT. This requires you to cycle power off and then on again, then hit the up button, then the down button, repeating 10 times until you get the diagnostic menu.
    • Fenix 5X. Garmin Fenix 5X has a menu option to enable and disable HRV.
    • Suunto Watches. These simply record HRV data automatically.
    • Polar V800. The Polar V800 will display HRV, though the details of the calculation are not provided. You can use the V800 to record HRV data, but not as part of a normal workout which limits the value.
