Quadruple is an open-heart surgical procedure that is done to improve blood flow to the heart muscle. In an open-heart surgery, the chest is cut open and the person is put on a machine to do the work of the heart and lungs during the surgery.

The Quintuple Bypass Procedure
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and starts with blood vessels being taken from another area of the body, often the leg, and grafted onto the existing heart vessel before and after the blockage.
A quintuple bypass requires more vessels than any other procedure, so multiple sites, including the arm, left internal mammary artery , and other vessels may be used.
Obtaining adequate vessels to use for the grafts can be one of the most challenging aspects of the procedure if the vessels to the heart are diseased, it is likely that the vessels in other regions of the body are also affected.
These vessels are then used to detour blood around the blockage on the way to the heart, with the blood literally being routed around the blocked portion of the vessel.
Once the vessels needed for the grafts are harvested, the chest portion of the surgery begins with a sternotomy, the incision that opens the chest and divides the sternum in half to allow the surgeon access to the heart.
Quintuple bypass is most often performed “on pump” using a cardiopulmonary bypass machine to temporarily do the work of the heart and lungs, allowing the surgeon to stop the heart and perform surgery without the constant movement of the heart beating. In some cases the procedure is done “off pump,” but this is far less common.

What Are The Risks Of Heart Bypass Surgery
All surgeries come with the chance of problems. Some include:
- Blood clots that can raise your chances of a stroke, a heart attack, or lung problems
- Problems breathing
Many things affect these risks, including your age, how many bypasses you get, and any other medical conditions you may have. You and your surgeon will discuss these before your operation.
Once youâve recovered, your symptoms of angina will be gone or much better. Youâll be able to be more active, and youâll have a lower risk of getting a heart attack. Best of all, the surgery can add years to your life.
Whats Recovery Like After Bypass Surgery
Itâs a gradual process. You may feel worse right after surgery than you did before. You might not be hungry and even be constipated for a few weeks after the surgery. You could have trouble sleeping while youâre in the hospital. If the surgeon takes out a piece of healthy vein from your leg, you may have some swelling there. This is normal.
Your body needs time to recover, but youâll feel better each day. It’ll take about 2 months for your body to feel better after surgery.
Youâll visit your doctor several times during the first few months to track your progress. Call them if your symptoms donât improve or youâre feeling worse.

You’ll need to ease back in. Some common plans include:
Driving. Usually 4 to 6 weeks, but you need to make sure your concentration is back before you get behind the wheel.
Housework. Take it slow. Start with the simple things you like to do and have your family help with the heavy stuff for a bit while you recover.
Sex. In most cases, you should be physically good to go in about 3 weeks. But you may lose interest in sex for a while after your surgery, so it could be as long as 3 months before you’re ready to be intimate again.

Coronary artery bypass grafting is a surgery that restores blood flow to areas of your heart that arent getting enough blood. This surgery can improve your heart function and how you feel, especially when youve just had a heart attack or theres an increased risk for you to have one in the near future.
About Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery
An estimated 170,000 Americans undergo coronary artery bypass surgery each year. This operation, once considered a difficult achievement, is now almost routine in many medical centers.
Studies have conclusively demonstrated that the operation prolongs life in patients who have severe blockages in the three major coronary arteries, in severe disease, in patients with low ejection fraction, and in patients with diabetes. There is less agreement about when it is appropriate for other patients. What Is Quadruple Bypass Surgery
The quadruple bypass surgery, also referred to as CABG is a type of heart surgery that helps clear all the blocked arteries. The surgery helps in removing the blockage of arteries and restores the adequate supply of blood flow to the heart. The surgeons remove a segment of the healthy blood vessel from another part in the body and detour it towards the blocked artery in the heart.
This surgery can be carried out by detaching the artery from the chest wall and attaching the open end to the coronary artery below the blocked area. In some cases, a piece of long vein in the leg may be sewn above the blocked area and the other end grafted to the coronary artery below the blocked area. These two procedures help in giving a new path to the blood and allow it to flow freely in the muscles of the heart.
One may require one or more than one grafts to help restore the free flow of blood. The most common apparatus or machine used in the surgery is the cardiopulmonary bypass with a pump oxygenator. This means in simple language, the heart-lung machine. The other members besides the cardiac surgeon include the cardiac anesthesiologist, surgical nurses, and a perfusionist.

Keyhole Coronary Bypass Surgery
Patients who develop narrowed heart arteries often require surgery to bypass the narrowed arteries. This operation is usually performed through a large breastbone cut. Most patients call this surgery CABG or triple bypass or quadruple bypass depending upon the number of bypass grafts performed. This is a good operation designed to make you feel better and live longer. The problem though is that the breastbone cut takes three months to heal and this slows down recovery from the surgery.
Some surgeons, like Mr Birdi and his team at The Keyhole Heart Clinic,, perform the same surgery through a small cut between the ribs over the right side of the chest. This is called keyhole coronary bypass surgery or Minimally Invasive Direct Coronary Artery Revascularisation . MIDCAB is most commonly used in patients with disease of an important artery on the front of the heart called the Left Anterior Descending Artery .
It is also possible to graft two, three or even more arteries using keyhole heart surgery. This is a highly skilled procedure and Mr Birdi is one of the few surgeons in the world performing this procedure.

The Heart Bypass Vessel
The most well known bypass is called the LIMA to LAD. LIMA stands for left internal mammary artery and is an artery that runs from the left collarbone area down the chest wall. LAD stands for left anterior descending artery which is the artery commonly responsible for the Widowmaker Blockage. In a bypass it is carefully taken down from the chest wall and attached beyond a blockage acting as a bypass. The LIMA to LAD is very successful as a bypass and has good long-term results. Why The Procedure Is Performed
Your doctor may recommend a minimally invasive coronary artery bypass if you have a blockage in one or two coronary arteries, most often in the front of the heart.
When one or more of the coronary arteries become partly or totally blocked, your heart does not get enough blood. This is called ischemic heart disease or coronary artery disease. It can cause chest pain .
Your doctor may have first tried to treat you with medicines. You may have also tried cardiac rehabilitation or other treatments, such as angioplasty with stenting.
