The Grapefruit Diet: What It Is

The Grapefruit Diet, has been around a long time — since at least the 1930s. A short-term, quick weight loss plan also known as the Hollywood Diet or the Mayo Diet , the Grapefruit Dietsurprisingly has survived the test of time, being circulated by word of mouth, online and in book form — yet no one claims ownership of the plan.

The premise of the Grapefruit Diet is based on an alleged “magical” ingredient in grapefruits, that, when eaten with protein, theoretically triggers fat burning and causes weight loss. The diet is designed to promote fast weight loss unfortunately, the weight lost is primarily from fluids and not fat and generally returns as soon as the dieter goes off the diet.

The seeds of the Atkins Diet may have been sown by the food choices of the wacky, very low calorie, low carbohydrate, high protein Grapefruit Diet.

Most versions promise a 10-pound weight loss during the 12-day diet. Dieters who want more than 12 days of monotony must wait two days before starting the diet again. Exercise is recommended in some versions and absent in others. Long-term weight control is not part of the diet plan.

1.Distinguishnutrient-dense foods from empty-calorie foods.

  • The Mediterranean diet is loaded with nutrient-dense foods, packed with vitamins, minerals, fiber and/or healthy fat: fresh produce nuts, seeds and olive oil beans and whole grains and lean proteins.
  • The typical American diet contains too many high-calorie foods devoid of nutrients: soda, chips, crackers, cookies and candy bars. They add to your weight, and raise your blood sugar and bad LDL cholesterol levels.

2. Choose healthyversus unhealthy fats.

3. Tell healthy carbsfrom unhealthy carbs.

  • High-fiber carbs are always better than simple carbs, like sweets, snack foods, chips, and white bread, pasta or rice.
  • Every meal should include lots of veggies, and some fruit or whole grain. Watch your grain portions, cautions Ms. Zumpano. I recommend three 15-gram servings of carbs per day for example, ½ cup oatmeal, 1 slice of bread and ½ cup of brown rice.
  • If you have diabetes and need to lose weight, limit your carbs to 2 to 3 grams per meal and 3 to 4 grams of carbs . This will also keep your blood sugars stable.

4. Eat at home more often.

5. Get a handle onyour snacking.

Recommended Meal Plan For Two To Six Months Post

Consume 900 to 1,000 calories and at least 65 to 75 grams of protein a day. For balanced nutrient intake, your daily servings should include:

  • 3 servings milk and dairy products
  • 3 servings meat or meat alternative
  • 3 servings starch
  • 1 serving fruit
  • 2 servings vegetable

Recommended portion sizes are 1/4 cup for solids and 1/2 cup for liquids.

Discontinue taking high-protein liquid supplement drinks or powders if possible. We recommend meeting your protein needs with food.

Here Are The Main Foods To Eat After Surgery

When your surgery has passed, it is necessary to follow general instructions in terms of nutrition:

  • You are allowed to drink regular non-carbonated water for the first day after surgery
  • As you recover, you can only consume liquid food after surgery for some time
  • Eat six, if not all seven times a day in small portions
  • The temperature of the dishes offered must not exceed 113 degrees

After gastric bypass surgery, the following products should be eaten for three days:

  • Sweet tea, caffeine-free
  • Freshly squeezed juices from fruits and vegetables
  • Low-fat milk
  • Sugar-free gelatin or popsicles

You should eat at least seven times a day. It is desirable to eat no more than one cup of liquid food at once. Not densely, of course, as such a diet prevents creating an additional load on the digestive system operated on. After three days, the post-surgery food diet becomes more diverse.

List Of Foods To Consume And Avoid Before Surgery

A healthy and balanced diet should be maintained for a few days before surgery, smoking should be eliminated , and alcohol consumption should be reduced . These harmful habits make circulation difficult, narrow the blood vessels, and increase blood pressure.

Your pre-surgery diet should consist of:

High Protein Meal Replacements

During the pre-op phase your body will go into ketosis. This allows your body to use your fat stores as an energy source. The result is the fat in your liver shrinks considerably in a short amount of time. As seen above, your diet is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. Below are some suggested high protein meal replacements:

  • Bariatric Advantage
  • Aspirin, Motrin, Advil, Celebrex, and any other NSAIDs

If you have sleep apnea and use a CPAP machine, plan on bringing it to the hospital. Purchase vitamins and supplements in advance of surgery. If you smoke you should stop prior to surgery. Smokers have an increased risk of blood clots and complications during and after surgery. Make a plan and implement it a few weeks prior to surgery.

Diet Progression After Bariatric Surgery

Immediately following surgery, you will begin with a clear liquid diet. You may gradually start adding thicker liquids to your diet after you are discharged from the hospital.

Two weeks following surgery, you may progress to blended and puréed foods. You may use high-protein , low-calorie liquid supplement drinks or powders to meet your protein requirements during this period.

It is important to know that following surgery, your stomach size is very small – less than 1/4 cup, or about the size of an egg. The opening that allows food to pass out of your stomach is also very narrow. For this reason, it is important to take only two to three sips or bites at a time of any new food and then wait 10 minutes before taking more. This will help you learn your limits and tolerance. Liquids will empty faster from your stomach than soft solids.

If you overeat or eat too quickly, you may experience nausea or pain. You should avoid rich, creamy liquids such as gravies, sauces and ice creams.

Week 4 And 5 Soft Foods

This stage of the diet will allow for a very gradual reintroduction of soft foods into your diet. This stage usually lasts about 1 or 2 weeks.

If a food can be easily mashed with a fork, or a spoon, then it is probably a candidate for stage three of the post-op gastric bypass diet. This portion of the diet will likely include soft meats and cooked vegetables.

The nutrient goals will remain the same as in stage two. 60+ grams of protein and 64+ ounces of fluid is recommended daily. The serving size of protein in stage three should be about 1 to 2 ounces and youll likely have 3 to 6 small meals.

Stage three, like stage two, focuses on high-quality lean protein sources. While stage 3 continues to focus on high-quality lean protein sources, up to three servings of soft vegetables may also be allowed a tiny portion of fat may also be permitted .

Recommendations for the protein sources in this stage of the diet will probably include several of the following items:

Meat, Dairy, and Eggs

You will still need to take your multivitamin and two to three 400-600 mg doses of calcium citrate .

Your dietitian may recommend you take 3,000 IU of Vitamin D3 total per day, which will likely be found in your bariatric specific multivitamin and calcium. It is important to make sure you are taking at least 12 mg of thiamin and at least 350 mcg of vitamin B12, luckily these doses are provided in most bariatric specific multivitamins.

Diet For Weeks Two To Four Post

Begin adding very small portions of puréed and soft foods as tolerated. Take very small bites and chew everything very well. Do not take more than two bites every 20 minutes when adding a new food.

Recommended puréed and soft foods:

  • Applesauce
  • Scrambled egg whites or egg substitute
  • Canned fruits
  • Lean ground meats or poultry

Avoid all bread and meats that are not easily chewed.

Healing Foods After Laparoscopic Surgery

Its imperative to drink as a lot of liquid, as you did, before the medical procedure. On your first day at home, have light fluids and nourishments, for example, squeezed apples, soda, ice pops, soup, saltines, and toast to help counteract your stomach.

The Grapefruit Diet: How It Works

This low-carbohydrate, moderate-protein diet is another low-calorie diet averaging 800-1,000 calories in most versions. Most people will lose weight — with or without grapefruit on the Grapefruit Diet — when calories are dramatically reduced to this level. Unfortunately, there are no explanations for how the mysterious grapefruit enzyme works and why it is only contained in grapefruit and not other citrus fruits.

No scientific studies to date substantiate grapefruit’s power to burn fat.

One small study published in 2006 and funded by the Florida Department of Citrus found that the addition of a half grapefruit or 4 ounces of juice with meals resulted in an average weight loss of more than 3 pounds in 12 weeks, with some participants losing 10 pounds. Researchers suspect the addition of grapefruit to the otherwise healthy meals reduced insulin levels and promoted a small weight loss. Study participants also “slightly enhanced” their physical activity, which could also explain the weight loss.

While grapefruit is a very nutritious low-calorie fruit , loaded with vitamin C and fiber, it is not a mysterious fat burner. The low glycemic index, high fiber, and low calorie nature of the fruit may reduce insulin levels and help dieters feel full and eat fewer calories. Beyond that, no magic appears to be at work with the Grapefruit Diet. Experts say one small study is not enough to pin magical powers on this fruit.

The 3-Day Cardiac Diet requires that you carefully measure foods and adhere to strict guidelines, which may be difficult and time-consuming.

Furthermore, some of these restrictions may promote an unhealthy relationship with food.

Thus, its likely more challenging to maintain in the long run, compared with other eating plans.


The 3-Day Cardiac Diet is highly restrictive, dangerous, and difficult to follow. Plus, it isnt backed by research.

Can I Use Salt Substitutes On The Cardiac Diet

Check with your doctor before using any salt substitutes. These products contain large amounts of potassium that your doctor may not want you to have. In particular, people with kidney problems or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics need to take care with potassium. Other salt substitutes, such as Mrs. Dash, do not contain potassium and are safe for everyone.

Sodium claims:

Phrases like low sodium and reduced saturated fat refer to specific measurements. Heres a key to understanding those terms:

  • Sodium free or salt free means less than 5 milligrams of sodium.
  • Very low sodium means 35 milligrams of sodium or less.
  • Low sodium means 140 milligrams of sodium of less.
  • Reduced sodium means at least 25 percent less sodium than the regular product .
  • Lightin sodium means at least 50 percent less sodium than the full-sodium product.

Saturated fat claims:

How do I know what foods are the right amount of salt or saturated fat? Here are a few tips for reading saturated fat labels.

  • Saturatedfat free means less than 0.5 grams of saturated fat and less than 0.5 grams of trans fatty acids.
  • Lowin saturated fat means1 gram of saturated fat or less and no more than 15 percent calories from saturated fat.
