How To Check Your Heart Rate

The PAI Health app takes your Resting and Max Heart rates to calculate your Heart Rate Reserve, and then compares those numbers with each activity you do to determine your PAI Score.

Outside of the app, you can calculate your own activity intensities by using percentages of your Maximum Heart Rate . Low intensity activities will be at about 0-60% of your MHR, moderate intensity activities will be about 60-80% of your MHR, and high intensity activities will be at 80-100% of your MHR.

So if your MHR is 201 beats per minute, a low intensity activity would have your heart pumping at around 118 beats per minute. In this same example, a high intensity activity would have your heart rate at 163 beats per minute or higher.

These are all overall guidelines, of course, to help you get a better understanding of how different intensity zones, and different activities, translate into PAI.

S To Measure Your Resting Heart Rate

  • Put on the soft strap with the heart rate sensor. Lie down on your back. Relax.
  • After about 1 minute, start a training session on your heart rate monitor. Choose any sport profile, for example Other indoor.
  • Lie still and breathe calmly for 35 minutes. Dont look at the monitor.
  • Stop the training session on your watch. Check the summary for your average heart rate and the value of your lowest heart rate . Mark the value of the lowest heart rate in your training diary and update it to your physical settings in Polar Flow.
  • Repeat the test every 1 to 3 weeks following the original setting as closely as possible.
  • Can I Go Over My Estimated Maximum Heart Rate

    The answer is yes.

    But its not in a sense that the heart would explode if someone goes beyond what formula would suggest is Max HR. No, its because formula generalizes people and tends to get imprecise for very fit athletes and people of older age who are very active.

    Maximum heart rate does decrease with age, but not nearly as much as formulas would suggest . It goes down mostly due to the decreased level of overall activity.

    In fact, trained athletes dont really see a drop in maximum heart rate until they end their careers and reduce training volume. Its not uncommon to see a 40-year-old athlete with a maximum heart rate of 195 where a formula would suggest only 180.

    Setting a Max HR benchmark too low would force athlete to under-exert himself and not get the optimal benefit from training.

    In any case, if an athlete is serious about his training, estimating maximum heart rate should only be a starting point. After getting into a structured training or competing in races it should become clearer where the true maximum heart rate is.

    Max Hr Test #: The 42 Test

    This test is more interactive and is based on VO2 max-type of training. The idea is that you dont let the body fully recover by having a rest interval shorter than the speed interval.

    What Should Your Heart Rate Be

    Heart rate norms are based primarily on age rather than gender, although men tend to have slightly lower heart rates than women.

    The ideal resting heart rate for adults is 60 to 100 bpm. Very fit individuals such as athletes may have resting heart rates below 60 bpm.

    Target heart rates can be used to maximize the efficiency of your workouts, as well as to keep you safe. Typically, exercising at 60 to 85 percent of your maximum heart rate is most beneficial.

    Heart rate: 20 QRS complexes x 6 = 120 bpm

    Usually electrocardiograms record 10 seconds, so all you have to do is count all QRS and multiply by 6.

    If the EKG is not a 10 seconds one, or you are not aware of its duration, count 30 large squares , and multiply the number of QRS complexes on them by 10. The result is an approximate heart rate.

    For example: Count the number of QRS complexes in 30 large squares and multiply by 10. If there are 11 QRS complexes, the heart rate is 110 bpm .

    Our research shows that the variation in maximum heart rate within age groups is fairly large. Genetics contribute more to maximum heart rate than physical fitness. Therefore, it’s hard to make a calculator that can estimate maximum heart rate precisely, and we recommend all of you who want to find your real HRmax to test yourself by pushing yourself to exhaustion:

  • Warm up thoroughly so you start sweating.
  • Do two intervals, each four minutes long. During the intervals you should be too short of breath to talk. Intersperse each interval with three minutes of active rest.
  • Start the third interval, but two minutes in, increase your speed even further an run until you’re too exhausted to continue. Your HRmax will be the highest heart rate you reach. The heart will reach a plateau at which it cannot beat any faster, regardless of how much you increase the workload.
  • If you don’t have a heart rate monitor, you can measure the maximum heart rate by holding two fingers to your neck for 30 seconds right after finishing the test. Double the number you get to find your HRmax.

    The study includes 107 men and women between 22 and 70 years of age. They all had their maximum oxygen uptake tested at our lab, and then performed a standardized maximum heart rate test a few days later.
