Fast Heart Beat Rate

Don't Miss

What Are The Types Of Tachycardia

How Do I Lower My Heart Rate Quickly?

There are 3 types of tachycardia.

  • Supraventricular where problems with the electrical signals in the upper chambers of the heart cause the heart to beat faster. This reduces blood flow to the rest of your body because your heart can’t pump blood as effectively. Two common types of supraventricular tachycardia are atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation.
  • Ventricular where problems with the electrical signals in the lower chambers of the heart cause the heart to beat faster. This affects its ability to pump blood to the rest of your body.
  • Sinus tachycardia where the natural pacemaker in your heart sends electrical signals faster than normal. This can be in response to a stressor described below, or it can be a sign of anaemia, problems with the thyroid gland or general ill health.

Warning Signs Of Cardiac Arrhythmia

Noticeable arrhythmia symptoms often include:

  • Palpitations defined as a fluttering, rapid heartbeat or pounding in the chest.
  • Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting or near fainting
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Fatigue, weakness or feeling tired easily
  • Breathing difficulties, e.g. shortness of breath
  • Difficulty walking, e.g. the feeling of facing air turbulence while walking

If suddenly or frequently experiencing any of these signs and symptoms at a time, it is highly recommended to seek urgent medical care.

Urgent Advice: Call 999 If:

You have sudden chest pain that:

  • spreads to your arms, back, neck or jaw
  • makes your chest feel tight or heavy
  • also started with shortness of breath, sweating and feeling or being sick
  • lasts more than 15 minutes

You could be having a heart attack. Call 999 immediately as you need immediate treatment in hospital.

Normal Resting Heart Rate For Adults

According to the American Heart Association , a normal resting heart rate is between 60 and 100 bpm . But some people may have a resting heart rate thats lower than 60 bpm and is still considered normal.

For example, athletes may find their heart rates are lower, sometimes as low as 40 bpm. Additionally, people taking certain medications, like beta-blockers, may also have a lower resting heart rate. Well explore more factors that can influence resting heart rate later on.

The table below shows the average normal resting heart rate for adults based on age.

A rapid heartbeat may occur with or without noticeable symptoms, which can vary depending on the underlying cause. If you know how to take your own pulse, you will generally feel a rapid pulse at the wrist with a rapid heartbeat. However, in some types of serious rapid heartbeats, such as atrial fibrillation, it may be difficult to feel and count an accurate pulse because the heart is not pumping blood effectively enough to produce a strong pulse.

If you are exercising and are in general good health, you might have a fast pulse and feel mildly short of breath during exertion. Normally, the rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath go away quickly after you slow down or stop your workout.

How To Control Fast Heart Rate

If you are concerned about your persistently high heart rate, schedule an appointment with your heart physician to get targeted treatment for your related medical issues.

Make sure to remain hydrated, take a balanced diet to maintain overall good health, and keep an eye on factors that help keep a normal heartbeat. Despite all this, if you continue to experience an elevated pulse rate, see a doctor for an evaluation.

What Can I Expect If I Have Tachycardia

Depending on which type of tachycardia you have, you may have harmless symptoms, very dangerous symptoms or something in between. Medicines and other treatments can help you control your symptoms. You may need to wear a Holter monitor or do electrophysiology testing to see how well your medicine is working.

How long tachycardia lasts

Tachycardia that puts you in danger doesnt go away on its own. Youll need to live a healthier lifestyle and take medicines to control it. You may also need to have a procedure, such as an ablation, to help you manage it.

Outlook for tachycardia

Although medications cant cure tachycardia, they can help you control it. Ablation may be a long-term solution to certain types of tachycardia. Ventricular fibrillation can be fatal without immediate treatment.

Diagnosing And Treating Fast Heart Rate

The NYC heart doctor determines the causes of fast heart rate using the most advanced diagnostic equipment. Diagnostic tests include blood pressure measurements, EKGs, and ultrasound of the heart.

The doctor may also check if an increase in heartbeat occurs only when you change positions, such as standing up from sitting or lying down and vice versa. He will look for an imbalance of heart rate and blood pressure control in the body to suggest the best solutions for your condition.

Treatment for fast heart rate depends on its causes and severity of symptoms. Treatment options for increased heart rate include:

  • Exercises such as walking, swimming, or light aerobic activity to decrease resting heart rate and promote better flow of oxygen in lungs and heart
  • Relaxation techniques to get rid of stress and reduce anxiety levels if they are the cause of high heart rate
  • Regular use of medication as prescribed by the doctor.

If you continue to experience symptoms or side effects, contact a healthcare provider, so you can be diagnosed by an expert.

Atrial Or Supraventricular Tachycardia

FAST Fetal Doppler Baby Heart Beat Rate Monitor Vascular 3MHz Probe ...

Atrial or supraventricular tachycardia is a fast heart rate that starts in the upper chambers of the heart. Some forms of this particular tachycardia are paroxysmal atrial tachycardia or paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia .

With atrial or supraventricular tachycardia, electrical signals in the hearts upper chambers fire abnormally. This interferes with electrical impulses coming from the sinoatrial node, the hearts natural pacemaker.

The disruption results in a faster than normal heart rate. This rapid heartbeat keeps the hearts chambers from filling completely between contractions, which compromises blood flow to the rest of the body.

A profile for atrial or SVT

In general, those most likely to have atrial or supraventricular tachycardia are:

  • Women, to a greater degree than men
  • Anxious young people

In extreme cases, those suffering with atrial or SVT may also experience:

  • Unconsciousness

Treatment for Atrial or SVT

If you have atrial or SVT, its possible that you wont need treatment.

But if the episodes are prolonged, or recur often, your doctor may recommend treatment, including:

  • Some medicinal and street drugs

Other, less common causes may include:

Symptoms Of Atrial Fibrillation

In atrial fibrillation, the heart rate is irregular and can sometimes be very fast. In some cases, it can be considerably higher than 100 beats a minute.

This can cause problems including dizziness, shortness of breath and tiredness.

You may be aware of noticeable heart palpitations, where your heart feels like it’s pounding, fluttering or beating irregularly, often for a few seconds or, in some cases, a few minutes.

Sometimes atrial fibrillation does not cause any symptoms and a person who has it is completely unaware that their heart rate is irregular.

What Causes Atrial Fibrillation

When the heart beats normally, its muscular walls tighten and squeeze to force blood out and around the body.

They then relax so the heart can fill with blood again. This process is repeated every time the heart beats.

In atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper chambers contract randomly and sometimes so fast that the heart muscle cannot relax properly between contractions. This reduces the heart’s efficiency and performance.

Atrial fibrillation happens when abnormal electrical impulses suddenly start firing in the atria.

These impulses override the heart’s natural pacemaker, which can no longer control the rhythm of the heart. This causes you to have a highly irregular pulse rate.

The cause is not fully understood, but it tends to affect certain groups of people, such as older people and people living with long-term conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure or obesity.

It may be triggered by certain situations, such as drinking too much alcohol or smoking.

Atrial fibrillation can be defined in various ways, depending on the degree to which it affects you.

For example:

  • paroxysmal atrial fibrillation episodes come and go, and usually stop within 48 hours without any treatment
  • persistent atrial fibrillation each episode lasts for longer than 7 days
  • permanent atrial fibrillation when it’s present all the time
  • long-standing atrial fibrillation where you’ve had atrial fibrillation usually for over a year

Causes Of Supraventricular Tachycardia

SVT happens when the electrical system that controls your heart rhythm is not working properly.

This causes your heart to suddenly beat much faster. It can then slow down abruptly.

A normal resting heart rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute . But with SVT your heart rate suddenly goes above 100bpm. This can happen when you’re resting or doing exercise.

What Is A Rapid Heartbeat

What can cause fast heart beat after breakfast throughout the day? – Dr. Sanjay Panicker

A rapid heartbeat, or tachycardia, is a condition in which the heart is beating fast, generally more than 100 beats per minute for an adult. A rapid heartbeat can be normal, or it can result from a disease, disorder or other harmful condition.

The heart pumps blood to the lungs and the rest of the body by contracting its four chambers. The two upper chambers are the atria and the two lower chambers are the ventricles. The sinus node, a small group of cells in your right atrium, transmits an electrical impulse through the heart, causing the atria to contract. The impulse travels through the ventricles, enabling them to contract and pump blood throughout the body. The number of times the heart beats per minute is called the heart rate. The rate of these contractions is determined by nerve impulses and hormones in the blood.

The rate at which your heart beats varies continuously, rising and falling in response to many conditions and situations. For example, your heart rate will rise during strenuous activity in order to ensure that all the cells of the body receive sufficient amounts of oxygen-rich blood. The heartbeat may also become faster in response to stressful situations or when you are in pain. Your heartbeat is normally lower during periods of relaxation or sleep. The average adult resting heart rate falls within the range of 60 to 80 beats per minute.

Treatment Of Cardiac Arrhythmia

Treatment is often required if the arrhythmia causes significant symptoms putting the patients at risk of a more serious arrhythmia or arrhythmia complications. However, treatment of cardiac arrhythmia may vary among individuals, depending on type of arrhythmia and its severity as well as each patients condition.

  • Anti-arrhythmic medications: For many types of tachycardia, anti-arrhythmic medications are often prescribed to control heart rate or restore a normal heart rhythm. The medications aim to minimize the chance of recurrence and mitigate complications while reducing disease severity that can potentially lead to death.
  • Electrical cardioversion:Electrical cardioversion delivers electrical shocks to the heart through electrodes placed on the chest. The current affects the electrical impulses in the heart, resulting in a restoration of a normal rhythm.
  • Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy : Cardiac resynchronization therapy helps the heart to beat at the right rate and rhythm. It uses a pacemaker to restore the normal pattern of the heartbeat by coordinating the upper heart chambers and the lower heart chambers. Cardiac resynchronization therapy is a modality of cardiac pacing used in patients with systolic dysfunction who pose a high risk of heart failure.
  • If Your Heart Is Beating So Fast It Feels Like Its About To Burst You Could Have A Serious Condition Or It Could Be Nothing To Worry About Heres What To Do

We all know the feeling of a bounding, fast pulse after exercising or when were furious about something. But, what if it happens while youre reading a book or watching TV? A racing pulse can be caused by a wide variety of conditions, from the benign to the serious.

It depends on the context in which your symptoms appear, says Helga Van Herle, MD, a cardiologist at Keck Medicine of USC and associate professor of clinical medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. But, if you feel like youre going to faint or if you experience lightheadedness, chest pain or sudden shortness of breath while your pulse is racing, you should seek urgent medical attention.

    Key Points About Palpitations

    • Palpitations are common, and they have many causes that range from harmless to life-threatening.

    • People who have other symptoms such as light-headedness, chest pain or pressure, or shortness of breath may have a serious problem and should see a doctor quickly.

    • ECG and certain blood tests are done.

    • Treatment depends on the cause.

Often a fast heart rate will have no significant effect on the heart, although there may be associated symptoms. In some cases however the symptoms may be enough as to cause concern and quality of life limiting symptoms. In a few cases, the heart rate may be continually elevated over a long period of time weeks-months often at heart rates above 120-130 beats per minutes and lead to a weakening of the heart muscle known as tachycardia mediated cardiomyopathy. Regardless, it is important to work up and identify any underlying causes of fast heat rate and give the appropriate treatment.

Microvascular Angina: Why Women Shouldnt Ignore Chest Pain And Fatigue

A sharp twinge, a sense of heaviness weve all felt chest pain from time to time. Sometimes its indigestion or a panic attack. But other times, its more serious.

Microvascular angina is an especially worrisome source of cardiac chest pain, and its often misdiagnosed because it doesnt show up as a blockage in the larger heart arteries during testing. This fact can cause doctors to miss the underlying cause.

Its concerning because the problem can be missed. It doesnt show up on a traditional angiogram, which can lead to delayed diagnosis if physicians dismiss the chest pain as nothing, says Erin Michos, M.D., associate director of preventive cardiology at the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease.

This chest pain in one of the hearts arteries is more common in women than in men, says Michos.

    How Are These Conditions Diagnosed

Van Herle explains that your doctor will take your pulse, either by counting the number of heartbeats in one minute or by using an electrocardiogram, a painless test that detects and records your heart activity through the use of small electrodes, or sensors, that are attached to your chest and arms or legs.

If your racing pulse is intermittent, she says, your doctor may order other types of testing to further evaluate it, such as a Holter monitor or a cardiac event recorder. Both of these devices are types of portable electrocardiograms that you can wear for a limited amount of time, ranging from 24 hours up to weeks or months. This will provide your doctor with information about your heart rate and rhythm over a longer period of time.

Following a heart-healthy lifestyle is always a good idea, but it may not necessarily reduce the episodes or complications of arrhythmia, according to Van Herle. In some cases, other medical therapies may be necessary. Work with your doctor to manage your symptoms.
