Cocaine And Beta Blockers Combining Effects
Because cocaine and beta blockers have seemingly opposite effects, some people may take beta blockers with cocaine to attempt to manage their cocaine use, or ease the person off cocaine. This can be extremely dangerous, there is no reason to take cocaine with a beta blocker.
The side effects of combining beta blockers and cocaine are often silent. Vasospasms may cause chest pain, but it is common to have no noticeable symptoms. Vasospasms may result in tissue damage, heart problems, stroke or death.
Beta blockers have also made cocaine symptoms worsening, which is the opposite of what happens when they are taken on their own. Causing a spike in blood pressure and stressing the cardiovascular system can cause problems breathing, pain, headaches, and confusion.
Beta blockers are not able to protect the cardiovascular system when taken with cocaine, and may actually put more strain on the heart and the rest of the system when both are used.
It is never advised to use a beta blocker to ease or decrease the heart symptoms associated with cocaine use. Even hospitals abandoned using a beta blocker on ER patients who were experiencing cocaine induced cardiovascular problems.
Maneuvers To Slow The Heart
Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia is a type of fast heart beat that may or may not have serious consequences. In PSVT, the heart beat speeds up suddenly and unexpectedly, occurring as distinct episodes lasting for seconds to hours.
Many people with this condition are taught physical maneuvers to quickly lower their heart rate and make a trip to the emergency room unnecessary. They include bearing down as if having a bowel movement, coughing, swallowing or placing your head between your knees. However, these maneuvers should only be attempted if your doctor has recommended them.

What Are Heart Palpitations
Most of the time you wont notice your heartbeat, but if you suddenly become aware of it, this may concern you or come as a surprise. The feeling of being aware of your heart beating is described as a palpitation.
Palpitations can range from simply being aware of your hearts activity to the sensation of it beating faster and harder than usual. It can sometimes feel like your heart is missing beats.

How Cocaine Affects The Cardiovascular System
Cocaine, one of the most commonly used illegal drugs, can produce several kinds of toxic effects on the human body. Among the most dangerous of these are the cardiovascular effects.
In fact, there are few things emergency room doctors dread more than seeing a young cocaine user showing up with chest pain, or other symptoms suggestive of cardiovascular disease. Their dread is well-founded.
Cocaine use can produce a variety of potentially catastrophic cardiovascular problems, which may be entirely acute or may become chronic. Worse, these problems may occur even in people whose cocaine exposure is limited to occasional, recreational usage.
What Causes A Cocaine Overdose

Danger Signs Of A Fast Heart Rate
Although a rapid heartbeat can have many harmless causes, some causes are serious. The heart normally beats between 60 and 100 times each minute. While a slight increase in heart rate is usually harmless, especially in people without heart disease, a very rapid heart rate can cause your blood pressure to plummet to dangerously low levels, which can lead to dizziness or fainting.
A fast heartbeat can also stress your heart, causing chest pain or a heart attack. When shortness of breath accompanies the rapid rate, this suggests the rate is too fast for your heart to pump properly. If you experience any of these danger signs or if something just “doesn’t seem right” seek immediate medical attention.
Normal Resting Heart Rate For Kids

- Weight. People who are obese may have a higher resting heart rate. This is because the heart has to work harder to supply the body with blood.
- Body positioning. Heart rate can increase temporarily when you move from a sitting to a standing position
- Smoking. Smokers tend to have a higher resting heart rate. Quitting smoking can help bring it back down.

When Cocaine And Alcohol Are Mixed Together
Mixing recreational drugs together is a very dangerous practice, and it indicates a problem with polydrug abuse. Mixing cocaine and alcohol together is one of the more common forms of polydrug abuse people often mix these substances together because one will, allegedly, reduce negative symptoms from the other. Alcohol also enhances euphoric effects from many substances, since it acts indirectly on GABA receptors, thereby increasing the release of some neurotransmitters.
The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction found that over half of cocaine-dependent individuals also suffered from alcohol dependency, highlighting the close link between these two addictive substances. Again, the best way to prevent an overdose is to avoid cocaine use altogether. If you opt to use cocaine anyway, some things you can do to avoid an overdose are listed below.
- Do not binge
- Dont succumb to cravings during withdrawal
- Dont use just any straw/item to snort cocaine
- Pay attention to your nose/dilute cocaine
- Avoid mixing cocaine with other substances

Cocaethylene: A Deadly Byproduct
One of the most serious problems with mixing alcohol and cocaine occurs when the two are metabolized through the liver. The organ produces cocaethylene, which can build up in the body and put stress on major organ systems, particularly the cardiovascular system and the liver itself.
Cocaethylene temporarily enhances the high associated with both cocaine and alcohol, but this euphoria also increases blood pressure, aggressive and violent thoughts, and poor judgment. It will build up to toxic levels in the liver. An increase in cocaethylene has also been linked to sudden death.
Consequences from cocaethylene production include:
- Myocardial infarction, or heart attack with heart pain
- Cerebral infarction, or death of blood vessels and brain tissue, leading to brain damage, stroke, or aneurysm
- Intracranial hemorrhage
- Cardiac arrhythmia, which can contribute to a later heart attack

Symptoms Of Cardiac Arrest From Cocaine Use
Cardiac arrest itself often has no symptoms. However, cocaine users whose hearts are harmed by cocaine use may complain of chest pain before going into cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest requires emergency medical treatment. If cardiac arrest is suspect, emergency medical services should be called immediately.
Unfortunately, people frequently do not survive experiencing cardiac arrest. If someone does survive cardiac arrest, they may have long-lasting health problems like brain damage from the lack of oxygen.

This condition is called Holiday Heart Syndrome. I was having an episode the other night and I took 400mg of magnesium and the racing heart went away in about 2 minutes and replaced itself with an anxiety attack… LOL. If you take a Magnesium suppliment before you drink, it will help. Limit the alcohol. Change up the kind of alcohol you drink. Vodka has had better results for me than Whiskey. It seems that the clear spirts make somewhat less work for your liver . Drink water.

I have had this problem now for 7 years. I am 45 years of age and have been a social drinker since my late teens and at least once a week I used to hit the booze reasonably hard. 7 years ago i first noticed that the next day after a drinking session I would start to get an increased heart rate usually about 1 hour after eating breakfast. This went on sporadically for about 2 years and I just pushed it to one side.
I have tried to work out what is causing this and I have a hunch.
It would be interesting to know if anybody else has experienced this.

Cocaine: The Perfect Heart Attack Drug
Cocaine is one of the most widely abused psychostimulants in the U.S., and nearly 15% of Americans over the age of 12 are estimated to have used cocaine at least once 2.
In addition to the effects discussed above, cocaine presents some unique cardiovascular risks to abusers. These risks are associated with premature heart attacks and other cardiovascular problems even in abusers who are otherwise healthy, and one researcher has called cocaine the perfect heart attack drug 3.
A study that compared 20 people who used cocaine socially at least once per month over the course of a year to 20 people who had never used the drug showed some alarming findings. When compared to those who hadnt used cocaine, the users showed 4:
- Higher blood pressure.
- Stiffer arteries.
- Thickening of the cardiac muscle.
This study demonstrated that the effects of cocaine on the cardiovascular system last long after its effects on the brain have faded. Cocaine has also been shown to increase the tendency of blood to clot, which further increases the risk of blocked arteries that could lead to heart attacks 5.
Cocaine abusers also frequently combine this drug with alcohol for various reasons including to enhance the euphoric high from cocaine or to reduce the effects of alcohol intoxication. Unfortunately, both of these substances alone are capable of increasing heart rate, and the combination can boost heart rate to even more dangerous levels.
Preventing And Treating Arrhythmias From Cocaine Use
Heart arrhythmias from cocaine can only be prevented by not using cocaine. If you have experienced arrhythmia symptoms and are using cocaine, it is dangerous to continue using it.
Arrhythmias are treated in a hospital or emergency department. The medical team will use medications to correct the abnormal heart rate. If the arrhythmia leads to cardiac arrest, CPR and Advanced Cardiac Life Support techniques may be used. An Automated External Defibrillator might be used if the arrhythmias is a shockable rhythm. An AED sends a small electrical charge through the chest wall to stop arrhythmias and allow the heart to correct its own rhythm.
Cardiac arrest is often fatal, so treatment for cocaine addiction should be considered if you experience heart arrhythmias.
