Very often, lifestyle changes, centred on diet, exercise and changing some of your daily habits, are enough to improve any POTS symptoms you may have. The most commonly recommended changes include:

  • drinking plenty of fluids aim for your pee to be a light yellow colour
  • avoiding or cutting down on alcohol and caffeine these can make your symptoms worse
  • adding more salt to your diet only do this if a doctor tells you to. Extra salt may be harmful to people with some conditions, like

This is because your fast heartbeats dont allow enough time for your heart chambers to fill up before the next beat. How Do You Check Your Pulse

You can measure your heart rate manually by checking your pulse. Follow these three steps.

Regular cardio exercise, like brisk walking, offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits. Some well-researched benefits include:

If you have an active stand test, youll usually be asked to lie flat for a few minutes and then your heart rate and blood pressure will be measured. Youll then be asked to stand up and your heart rate and blood pressure will be measured a few more times over the next 10 minutes.

What Happens In Pots

Normally when you sit up or stand, gravity pulls some of your blood down to your belly area, hands and feet.

This is all done without needing to think about it, by the autonomic nervous system the nervous system in charge of automatic body functions.

In PoTS, the autonomic nervous system does not work properly. There’s a drop in blood supply to the heart and brain when you become upright and the heart races to compensate for this.

That does seem awfully high. I just checked my graph and it seems that on my walks I typically see heart rate spike to around 130. Maybe a restart is in order?

I wouldnt think that AUTO would impact things. Do you have small wrists? More likely youre getting some light interference .

What is a normal heart rate to have when walking at a slow pace? My heart rate is 130 when standing or walking and after 15 minutes it shoots to 180.

Standing or gentle walking your pulse should probably not go over 100 and certainly not up to 180 ⦠which is probably near or over your max heart rate (Max heart rate is 220 minus your age in years ⦠so if youâre 40, your max heart rate is 180 ⦠and your target rate for vigorous exercise is 70% of that ⦠i.e. about 135 â¦

So, get yourself to your doctor urgently and try to avoid more than a little walking. Definitely donât stress your heart with exercise until youâve seen him/her.

If your heart rate doesnât drop fairly quickly or it stays around 130 when resting for say 10-15 minutes, never mind waiting for a doctor, have someone get you to an emergency care facility.

Heart attacks have a nasty habit of creeping up on you without your realizing there is a problem ⦠and sometimes you donât even realize youâre having an attack.

If your heart rate when sitting comfortably for say 15 minutes doesnât settle below about 100 BPM go visit an urgent care facility and if it doesnât go below about 120 an ER would be better! Donât drive yourself there!
