In everyday terms, this diminished aerobic capacity can produce fatigue and breathlessness with modest daily activities.

Heart Failure In Young People

The American Heart Association says that sometimes the heart of a child may not function normally. The term heart failure describes a heart thats not functioning properly. It does not mean that the heart has stopped working, but instead that it isnt working as well as it should.

They go on to list some possible symptoms of heart disease experienced by children:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Excessive sweating
  • Low blood pressure

Looking at this topic more broadly, there are some troubling signs that heart attack rates are rising among people, especially women, under the age of 54. This while research shows that heart attack rates in the U.S. have declined in recent decades among 35- to 74-year-olds, according to the AHA.

The research wasnt focused on kids or teens, but it does emphasize the point that heart ailments are no longer just something that quote-unquote old people need to worry about.

Teen Years A Time To Prevent Diabetes Heart Attack

About 1 in 5 teenagers in the United States has obesity.

That is, they have a body mass index score — a measure of body fat based on height and weight and accounting for age and sex — that is higher than 95% of other teenagers of the same age, sex, and height.

The researchers tracked 12,300 teenagers who were part of the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health.

They determined the BMIs of the teens when they were 11 to 18 years old in 1994 and 1995, and then looked at health outcomes when the teens were 33 to 43 years old in 2016 and 2018 .

About half of the teenagers were female, and about two-thirds were non-Hispanic white. They had a mean BMI of 22.5 kg/m2, which indicates obesity in teenagers but is a normal BMI in adults.

Having obesity as a teenager was linked to greater odds of having high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, cancer, kidney disease, sleep apnea, and premature heart failure, but not stroke — after adjusting for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, income, smoking, and alcohol use.

Compared to a teenager without obesity, a teenager with obesity is 2.73 times more likely to develop diabetes, 2.19 times more likely to have a premature heart attack, and 1.57 times more likely to report poor adult health, Nagata says.

“In general, teenagers who have a higher BMI are more likely in adulthood to have a higher BMI, and that is associated with these risks, ” he says.

What Is A Heart Attack

New Test Can Detect Heart Disease in Teens

Heart attack is medically known as myocardial infarction, and occurs when an area of the heart doesnt get enough oxygen which leads to chest pain. This lack of oxygen also causes the tissues of the heart to die. If the lack of oxygen is in a small area, there is minor damage to the heart and if it spans a large area of the heart, the damage is major. Lack of oxygen mainly causes due to a blockage in a blood vessel that supplies the heart.

A heart attack happens when the blood that flows to a section of heart muscle gets blocked. That section of heart muscle begins to die without a quick restoration of blood flow, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Teen Suffers Heart Attack Days After Receiving Pfizer Covid

  • The teen is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation
  • The health ministry in Singapore believes his condition was aggravated by strenuous physical activities
  • Teenage boys are 14 times more likely to develop myocarditis after a Pfizer vaccine jab

A 16-year-old boy in Singapore suffered a heart attack just days after receiving a shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine.

Singaporean medical investigators said the teenager developed acute severe myocarditis six days after receiving his first dose of Pfizers COVID-19 vaccine. He later suffered a heart attack.

“The myocarditis was likely a serious adverse event arising from the COVID-19 vaccine he received, which might have been aggravated by his strenuous lifting of weights and his high consumption of caffeine through energy drinks and supplements,” the Ministry of Health said Monday in a press statement, according to Yahoo News.

The teenager is now recovering and is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation before he can resume his activities. Officials at the MOH said the boy is expected to be discharged in the coming weeks.

“The independent clinical panel appointed to assess and adjudicate the VIFAP application found that while he has made good improvement, because his condition was severe and critical, he will require treatment and rehabilitation for some time yet to continue his recovery,” the ministry said.

The teen will receive $225,000 in financial assistance from the countrys Vaccine Injury Financial Assistance Programme .

Heart Problems In Teens

Signs of heart disease in teens are similar to those in younger kids. Usually, teens who are active in sports will have already undergone a physical exam with their pediatrician that included questions to try and help capture potential heart problems early. However, if your teen athlete complains of chest pain or any other heart symptoms during activity, consider scheduling a screening and evaluation by a pediatric cardiologist.

Many women use prescription hormone drugs for birth control or for reducingsymptoms of menopause . Could thesedrugs jeopardize your heart health?

“Birth control pills can increase your risk of having a blood clot, eitherin the heart or in the legs, and they can also raise your blood pressure. So, if you have a history of high blood pressure or clotting problems, other types of contraception might be a better fit for you,” says Colliver.”But for most young women, it’s safe to take birth control medication.”

Colliver notes that women over the age of 50 are at an increased risk forheart disease and should completely avoid estrogen and progesterone drugs,if possible. “If your overall risk of heart attack is extremely low and youdesperately need relief from hot flashes and other postmenopausal symptoms, then hormone replacement therapy may be fine for you,” says Colliver. “Butafter the age of 65, we really try to avoid using them at all because theydo increase the risk of heart disease and potentially breast cancer.”

Lack Of Oxygen In The Blood

If levels of oxygen in the blood decrease due to carbon monoxide poisoning or a loss of normal lung function, the heart will receive un-oxygenated blood.

This will result in the heart muscles being damaged, triggering a heart attack.

What Is A Congenital Heart Defect

Congenital heart defects occur in about 1 out of every 100 newborns as a result of the heart or blood vessels around the heart not developing correctly. These defects, which can be mild or severe, interfere with the heart’s ability to work like it’s supposed to.

In the U.S., babies are screened for serious congenital heart defects within 24 hours of being born. However, some congenital heart defects, such as atrial septal defects , can remain undiagnosed until a child’s teen years or later.

The detection of heart disease in children has been a top priority of the medical community since the invention of the stethoscope, says Glen Iannucci, MD, a Pediatric Cardiologist at the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta Heart Center. In the current era, we have become more sophisticated in our methods of detecting heart disease, including the prenatal detection of congenital heart defects and rhythm abnormalities.

Although you may hear some physicians use CHD in reference to congenital heart disease, congenital heart defect is the more accurate term. Both phrases refer to the same thing.

Unfortunately, just like the trend in heart attacks, the incidence of hypertension is rising faster in young adults than in older adults. High blood pressure makes your heart muscles thicken, harms your blood vessels, and increases your risk of a heart attack.

Heart Attacks Can Occur In Teenagers

By Megan Rauscher, Reuters Health

2 Min Read

NEW YORK – Although quite rare, heart attacks can occur in adolescents without heart defects and a case series reported by two cardiologists from The Heart Center at Akron Childrens Hospital, Ohio, serves as a of reminder this.

Reporting in the current issue of Pediatrics, Drs. John R. Lane and Giora Ben-Shachar describe nine healthy adolescents , ages 12 to 20 years, who developed severe chest pains and met the criteria for a diagnosis of heart attack.

Eight of the patients had abnormal EKGs, all of them had abnormal cardiac enzyme levels, and three had abnormalities revealed by echocardiogram. Heart rhythm abnormalities were seen in four patients. Although several other types of irregularities were detected, none of the patients has abnormal anatomy.

Tests for drug abuse, cholesterol levels, and blood coagulation rate were all negative, the authors report.

Heart attacks in teens are obviously rare but not an impossible diagnosis, Lane told Reuters Health. When an adolescent develops severe chest pain typical of a heart attack, it should not be dismissed lightly.

Lane also noted that this is a different disease than heart attacks in adults – the young patients did not have any obvious risk factors, they had normal coronary arteries and they tended to recover without any long-term problems.

What Causes Heart Disease In Young Adults

In older men, nearly all heart attacks are caused by atherosclerotic blockages in coronary arteries. Conventional coronary artery disease also predominates in young adults, accounting for about 80% of heart attacks. About 60% of these young patients have disease of just one coronary artery, while older patients are more likely to have disease in two or three arteries.

Because CAD is the most important cause of early heart attacks, it deserves the most attention. But the other causes should also be considered. In broad numbers, about 4% of heart attacks in young adults are triggered by inborn abnormalities of the coronary artery anatomy. Five percent can be attributed to blood clots that originate elsewhere and are carried in the bloodstream to otherwise normal coronary arteries, where they block the artery. And in another 5%, various disorders of the blood clotting system increase the risk of clot formation throughout the circulatory system, including in coronary arteries.

A wide range of problems account for the remaining 6% of heart attacks in young adults. They include spasm or inflammation of the coronary arteries, radiation therapy for chest tumors, chest trauma, and abuse of cocaine, amphetamines, or other drugs.

Each of these problems is tragic in its own right. But because it’s both common and preventable, atherosclerosis is the greatest tragedy of all.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States. And doctors are beginning to notice an uptick in the number of teenagers diagnosed with high blood pressure and high cholesterol definite risk factors for heart disease. Thats why its vital for everyone to understand the risk factors or things that increase the risk of a heart attack and the risk of heart disease.

Staying heart healthy means taking an active role in ones own wellbeing as well as that of those for whom we are entrusted to care. Good health and heart-healthy habits can be instilled in young children and teenagers from an early age physical activity is important as are good dietary habits.

As U.S. News and World Report documents, heart problems or the kinds of things that eventually lead to heart problems can begin at a very early age, according to Dr. Gregory Perens, who is a pediatric cardiologist at UCLA Mattel Childrens Hospital. That same story notes that beyond genetics, the earliest risk factors include maternal smoking while the child is still in utero.

Doctors recommend breastfeeding infants, if possible this has been found to lower a childs risk of developing heart disease later in life.

In other words, a lack of sleep in young people can start a chain reaction of health problems up to and including heart disease.
